The World's fair directory last eveuing took ao-lion ao-lion on two of the mut talked of nominations made by Dirsxtor-Gen-eraliavi. The voto on the continuation continu-ation of M. E. btoue of Chicago as chief of the department of foreign affairs resulted in a tie, aud the further consideration con-sideration of his name was postponed until next meeting. Mr. Stone, however, how-ever, hearing that a light hail been made on his confirmation, promptly withdrew his name. The committee appointed to investigate investi-gate t.io accusations acainst Walter Maxwell, nominated for chief of the bureau of horticulture, reported that there was no proof to sustain the charges against his character. When the nomination was put to a vote, however. how-ever. Maxwell was detested by a vote of 'J 5 to Iiireclor beiieral Iavis thereupon submitted the uamo of General Gen-eral N. P. ( hipman of Red HI nils, Colorado, Col-orado, and he was at once coufirmed by the directory. The board of control must now pas upon Chipmnn, aud there is some talk that the feeling over Maxwell's rejection rejec-tion may lead to Chipmn's rejection by the board. The president of the world's congress auxiliary is rapidly pushing to the front a scheme of tin) proposed world's congress con-gress to be held in Chicago during the world's fair, and several committees, 'composed of the most prominent citizens citi-zens of this city, are aolively engaged in preparing preliminary addresses stating the scope of tho work iu their respective departments. The tirst of such addresses was issued yesterday by the general committee on the labor congresses. It says that ample accommodations will bo provided provid-ed for all labor organizations, economic associations and industrial societies which may desire to hold congresses con-gresses or conventions of their own. The general labor congress will be arranged with the co operation of the most distinguished students of labor problems and the most widely known leaders in the industrial world. Among other problems to be considered by it are: "The Steps iu Industrial Advance," Ad-vance," "Comparative .study of the Conditions of Lalior," "Conflicts of Labor La-bor and Capital," "Publio Economies as Related to Labor;" "Labor Legislation;" Legisla-tion;" "International Labor Problems," Prob-lems," aud "Women's Labor." This last section will be tinder the especial charge of a committee on labor congresses con-gresses of the women's branch. The committee believes these proposed pro-posed congresses may be made a most powerful agency for improving the condition of labor, and invites the cordial cor-dial co-operation and assistance of labor organizations, etc. SrRiNiiKiKLK, III. .Juno 13.
