Show A LOCAL LAND DECISION. A Ci WI1I1 h Attraet'd Uenenl Atten-tloa Atten-tloa Tlirouthout the Territory. In the matter of tho contested land case before tho United States land oflice iu Suit Lake City, wherein tho United States and Jeremy & Co. are the contestants con-testants against Alfred Thompson, involving in-volving tho right to lot No. 4 of section 13 and lot No. 1 of section 19, township 1 north, rang 2 west, Salt Luke land district. Kcgiater-IIotibs and 'Ri '.er-. man yesterday forwarded nV-Ihrug-ton a voluminous report of the case, together with their decisions thereon. Tho ca6e has attracted considerable otlcution, especially among those en-gaped en-gaped in the sait industry adjacent to Salt Lako City. Thompson predicates his claim under the desert act for the reclauiaiion of arid lands, while the contestants base their claim on the ground that tlio lands involved iu the contest are saline, and hence are not within the operation of the laws under which Thompson rests his claim. The register anil receiver, however, in their decision, seem to think that the land iu controversy does not come within a strict interpretation of saline lands, as contemplated by the laws of the United Slates, and hem e forward a derUion decidedly in favor of Thompson Thomp-son to the commissioner of the general land ollice at v ashiiigtoo, where a sub-sequent sub-sequent review of the case will cither result in affirming the opinion expressed ex-pressed by the local land oflieers or its rev ersal. At all evonls it is sale to say that some time will elapse before tho matter is finally settled. |
