His alarming condition was not generally known until evening, when the attending physicians phy-sicians announced his malady to bo Bright' disease and urtcmia. Kalakaua's visit to this country was made on account of failing health. He commenced to gain strength soon after his arrival here, but his improvement was only temporary. After his return from southern California Cali-fornia last week Kalakaua became THE LATE KINO KALAKAUA. worse, and ' during the .last few days was .unconscious nearly all the time, life being prolonged only by the use of stimulants. - At 1:80 Colonel Macfarland, the king's chamberlain found the king no longer recognized him. Then Rev. Dr. Keed. of Trinity Episcopal church, began be-gan reading selections from the scriptures scrip-tures amid demonstrations of grief on the part of the attendants of the dying monarch. At 2:30 Fleet-Surgeon Wood announced the king was dead. The remains will be embalmed and taken to Hawaii on the United States steamer Charleston. The kiug will be succeeded by his sister Trincess Lilino-kalani, Lilino-kalani, who has been acting as regent during his absence. Kalakaua I, born November 18, 1838, was the son of the Chieftcss Keohokalolo and Kapaakea, was of pure Hawaiian blood, and was akin to the ancient royal family. He was elected king by the parliament on February 13, 1874, on the death of Lunalilo I; was crowned February, 18S3, and married Queen Kapiolaui, born December 81, 1830. Princess Lydia Kamalieha Lilinolani, who succeeds to the throne, is Kalakaua's Kala-kaua's eldest sister, and was born September Sep-tember 2, 183M. She is married to his excellency, John O. Dominis, governor of Oahu. On July 10. 18S7, after some political excitement, he signed a new constitution constitu-tion which practically cuts off all tho prerogatives of the crown. Tho wife of the king received a native education and adheres to the national customs. There was but little in common between be-tween the royal pair, and they have always al-ways lived apart.
