Show AN AWFUL DROP. Th Engine- ft the Mmimiotli l.oira Con-trol Con-trol 01 tli. Ilruk.. At tho offices of the Mammoth mine in thistity.no tui ther particulars could bo gleaned of the sickening accident which occurred at their property lato yesterday evening.and of w hich meager private advices were received hero this morning. Mr. Sam Mclntyre and tho secretary of tho company, J. Fred Corker, Cor-ker, were wholly at a loss to account for the fearful . and most unexpected calamity by which Captain Thorn will probably lose his life as well as his partner, who was the sharer in the awful drop. There is no reasonable hypothesis on which to account for such events; for no matter how ofton safety catches and machinery looking to the preservation of lit'o are Inspected, they almost always fail to meet tho exegpneies of the case whoa called into requisition. In the instance of yesterday's sad eveut on the Mammoth, it is peculiarly inexplicable for the reason that the engine, cage, and all the machinery ma-chinery connected with the shaft had but recently been remodelled and repaired so that it was thought to be impossible for anything like yester- day's trouble to happen. Mr. Mclntyre , u " bolieves that it might have been caused i V . by some malicious person putting oil oo , J' . the brake, so that when the friction waa t , I api liod H would fail to hold, ,f ueh.,V;:rf "!'ir& thing happened once beore at thc 'A' mine; but if the suspicion is true in this VW.i case, it was a cowardly and most damn- .V- i able piece of business. It is presumed f j that the cane must have been precipitated precipita-ted from the top with almost incredible impetus and that when it reached the (100-level it struck the chains on which it rests and the men thrown with violent force out into the station. Captain Stone is an old-time resident of Tintie, having lived there live years. He has been in the employ of the Mammoth Mam-moth company for two years, and was , generally esteemed by those who knew him. I |
