Show Kt HANGINU COIN I OK DAKS). Th Treaiury Department will Chare T.uu .r mi 00. Washington, March 5. Tho treasury trea-sury department has already been called upon under the Sherman amendment amend-ment to the legislative, executive and judicial appropriation bill authorizing the socretary of the treasury to exercise exer-cise his discretion in tho exchange of gold lars for gold coin and also to impose im-pose a charge for such exchange. Heretofore tho statute regulating this matter has been construed by the treasury trea-sury department as against the imposition imposi-tion of a charge. Under tho new law the policy pf tho department depart-ment will be to charge 4 cents per hundred dollars in value for all gold bars required for shipment and if this falls the question will then bo considered as to tho advisability of refusing re-fusing altogether to exchange gold bars for shipment, thus compelling the shippers ship-pers to use gold coin or to obtain gold bars from private parties. Tho ruling to this effect was first made yesterday on a telegraphic order for S'iOO.OOO in gold baps for shipment from New York. The director of the mine, with the approval ap-proval of the secretary of the treasury, directed that a charge of $'.'10or4 cents per $100 be made for exchange. |
