Show It is rather singular that nearly ever city in the country is quite satisfied that its census enumeration is away below par, while that of every other municipality munici-pality is inflated. Had Max O'Rell returned re-turned to America about June he would havo revised his former view nud declared that this country contains upwards of 100,000,000 peoplo, mostly (swindlers. There is something strango about this rivalry of cities which induces misrepresentation, abuse, and accusation. accusa-tion. It is in a way to be deplored, too, for it is a tacit acknowledgment that the municipality is inferior in dignity dig-nity to the individual. Tho grocer or the dry goods dealer who would seek to lmild up his own trade by persistent falsi lication or even misrepresentation of that of the man across the street would hardly be considered a tit man to deal with. Still cities by their accredited ac-credited mouthpieces, tho newspapers make claims for themselves which investigation in-vestigation readily proves to bo groundless, ground-less, aud assertions us to other towns which aro possessed of about tho same degree of truth. If this is what may be properly termed rivalry, it is certainly rivalry of the brand practiced on the shady side of Queer street. |
