Port Huron ts the headquarters ot the order of the Knights of the Maccabees, a fraternal beneficiary organization which haa become remarkably successful and popular pop-ular not only In the state but wherever it ha become known. Tho people of 1'ort Huron naturally feel ytiito proud of the institution, as nearly every able bodied, physically qtialifled male citizen in the city belongs to it. The 1,100 and over members in Port Huron and Fort Gratiot adjoining certainly show t heir confidence in the organization by taking and holding a membership in it. Nearly three thousand persons in the county of St. Clair are en-roiled en-roiled as numbers of this order. In 1881 the Knights of the Maccabees as organised and incorporated u nder a pecial act of the legislature of the state of Michigan. On Dec. 81 following the annual an-nual report of tho society showed just TOO members in good standing. The report ending March 31, 18H0, shows nearly 15,000 in the state of Michigan alone, a remarkably remark-ably rapid growth. The society has paid out in Michigan alono $850,000 in death benen'ts to the widows aud orphans of deceased de-ceased members. The average cost per $1,000 death benefit has been, during the ight aud a half years of its existence, less than $4 on assessment account. Whut the Maccabees particularly pride themselves po l that t hey have been able to pay all tath aud disability claims within ten Aays after proofs of death of the member have been filed. It has made wonderful progress, showing now a membership in other states outside of Michigan of over 1,000. notably la New York, Ohio, I'enu-atlvania, I'enu-atlvania, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and 16 the province of Ontario, Can., which together with the membership in the jtfichigaii state jurisdiction makes a grand total of over 33,M0 members, the work of less than nine rears.
