Show i Mr. Teuton Proposes to Extmd the Lin.its of tho rr--e Delivery System. i FOUR ADDITIONAL CARRTE3. ! New Letter Boxes to be Placed in the Out-lyitig Out-lyitig Districts A Late Hotel Collection. .Postmaster Benton and PontofuYe Inspector In-spector A. T. Lawrence hav e perfected plans for some much-needed improvement improve-ment in the mail service of Salt Lake City. Mr. Law renee, who is inspector of the Penver division, has been in the city for several days and this morning outlined tho plans for the extension of the. service to a TlMt s reporter. Thero are now twelve carriers employed em-ployed in this city and there are sixty-eight sixty-eight street letter bpxes. In this department de-partment Postmaster Benton has asked an iucrea.se of four carriers one horse and three footmen. Six new street boxes will also be put up in newly acquired ac-quired territory and three additional large street boxes w ill be placed at various va-rious points in the business portion of the city. By this change, if it is grautcd, and there Is no doubt that the departm cut will allow It. nincly eigh additional blocks will be brought within the limits of the free delivery system. Mr. Benton bases his request for the additional carriers on the basis of M.ltot) inhabitants, out of which about 411.000 would then be supplied by the free delivery de-livery system, lu order to render this service more cll'iu'tive hn will ask the city railway Vompaiiics to assist as far us they can in the transportation of the carriers to the oullyiug district. It i to be hoped that the railway companies will grant the assistance. With the four additional carriers, Mr. Lawrence Mini, the ratio of tho population popula-tion will be about 2H00 to one currier. This is an unusually large proportion, lu densely populated cities, where, the carriers do not hav e nearly so much walking to do, the rates of tho pnpult- tion is only about 250(1 to every carrier. One thing that makes it moro difficult for the carriers in this city is the fact that the block hi h contain no alley.. In Salt Laku the block contain ten acres each, while in eastern cities they contain only from two to two and one half acres. A carrier some times hn a letter for a house.in the center of a block. Jle has to get in to it by an alley way ihat runs only to that house. Proliably the only other letter he has for that 'block Is on the other side but ho cau't get through. He has to walk back and go nearly a mile around. This makes about four times the walking walk-ing that tho carrier in eastern cities has to do. Another matter that has received the attention of Mr. Benton and Inspector Lawrence was suggested liy becrctary Gillespie of the elmmb. r of commerce, lie has written a letter to the poslinas-ler, poslinas-ler, the substance of which is to secure K. P. O. service on the train, leaving this city over the Union Pacific at 5 p. m. da'dv. This train roadie Denver at 7:55 p. in. the following day ami is really the best connection between Salt Lake and Denver. Notwithstanding this fact this train ci-rties neither mail, express, nor has it K. P. service. A g.iod many complaints have been made in relation to mail arriving at Ogden during the night time, which does not reach Salt Lake until 8 o'clock in the evening. This ciiu-e a delay of about twelve hour. If Messrs. Beiilon and Gillespie can secure the service asked for this delay will also hn obviated. obvi-ated. , .., . Mr. Benton also proposes to establish a late hotel collection. There has been much kicking on the part of tourists on this score. Thev could not understand why it was that they had to carry the letter written iu the evening over to the nostoliiec Ihemselve, and heaped much uncalled for blame on the postmaster post-master for Ihat cause. This cause of complaint will, however, be done away with. Messrs. Beiilon and Lawrence have drawn up walk for the carriers on the basis of sixteen carriers, and Superintendent Superin-tendent Sladeof the free delivery system sys-tem is confident that he can give Unpeople Un-people of Salt Lake a good free lie-livery lie-livery tvssioin. The new carriers' limit will he as follows: Ninth We-t, Klglilh North and Ninth streets. Fourteenth Last and Ninth South. In the course of conversation, the reporter re-porter asked I nspeeior Lawrciicu how-Mr. how-Mr. Benton wits getting along a post-i master. Mr. Law renee replied that he had been unable to dUcover any Hie on Benton. . .. . m - - |
