Chicago publishers' and editors are well housed A description of their homes begins, naturally, with mention of the mansion in which Joseph Med-il- l, the veteran chief of The Tribune, baa lived for many years. It is located on Cass street, an extremely quiet and aristocratic thoroughfare of the North Side, near to the lake, and yet within fif-teen minutes' walk of The Tribune office. The county jail is but a few pearance very much resemUra the oU rasluoned Quaker rer'denees with which Arch rtad Walnut streets in Philadelphia were lined in olden davs. Inside it is arge and roomy. On the north, on a line with the building proper, is an in-closed balcony, something after the stvle of a square rustic summer house, with fragrant vine3 climbing no and all around. Joseph R. Dnnlop, editor and one of the owners of The Times, has resided for the greater part of the ket fifteen years at the Palmer house. , He has just been joined in marriage, however, to Mrs. Storey, widow of the once famous pro-prietor of that paper, and on their return from the honeymoon tha happy couple . will occupy a magnificent residence on Prairie avenue. .' The late Andrew Shu-- ' man, editor-in-chi- and one of the larg-est stockholders of The Evening Jour-- nal, owned "and occupied a. beautiful villa, which stood in. large and well, cared for grounds; at Evanston. It 'was sold a few weeks ago for something in the neighborhood of 17,000, a big figure for a piece of suburban property. . Having said so much regarding the men who own' the paper of Chicago, perhaps a line may be devoted to one of the rank and file of the profession. Fif-teen years ago William A. Taylor, better known to every journalist in the city by the' familiar abbreviation of "Billy," started out to earn his living as a re-porter. Eight years later he became city editor of The Herald, and a few weeks ago he moved down one flight of stairs, took possession of a new desk, and was gazetted in the official orders as managing editor of that paper. The tame week he moved into one of the llln.i.. al THE HOME OF MR. MEDILL. i, ' blocks away, and Clark street, the main ' artery of the North Side, with ite noisy cable Cart-- and its ever flowing proces-sion of pedestrians, is just as near ; but a calm seems to have pervaded Cass street as far back as the memory of , tne pro-verbial oldest inhabitant can reach, and its inhabitants are seldom annoyed by the roar of the outside world. "Uncle Joseph's" domicile is aspacious, hospitable looking, double brown stone, standing "in ample grounds. A broad flight of steps leads up to the entrance hall, the portico being supported by handsome pillars. The well kept lawn is separated from the sidewalk by a granite curb, surmounted by a low or-namental railing. A couple of shade trees, with generous foliage, stand as bulwark between the rays of the sen and the windows of the apartments on ' the ground floor, while at night time a tall, ornamental lamp, vory different in appearance and design to those furnished by the city for ordinary humanity, di-rects the visitor to the floor belL Tho house, contains' over twenty', rooms, in-- '. eluding a large banqueting hall, double ! drawing rooms and parlors and a apa- - cious library. Its furnishings are elabo-rate, but at the same time quiet in tone; There are four guest chambers, and they have been occupied at pne time and an-other by prominent people. ; The Medill family .has not done as much entertain-ing of late as of old, but its receptions and dinners are always events in local ociety The annual "editions of the city direo-- f tprxs49Qftl8?Jjave b$n responsible fof. VICTOR LAWSON'S ABODE. handsomest residences on the West Side, in which he has invested his savings to the extent of some $11,000. ' The house is located at 879 Warren avenue. ,The exterior is of that peculiar kind of sandstone Itnown as Ohio buff Amherst. The architecture is novel and striking,- - and the handsome carvings above the windows and door invariably arrest the attention of pedestrians. A massive and beautifully carved oak stair-case leads from the first to the second floor, and the house throughout is wired for electric lights and bells. There are fifteen rooms, the ground floor being so arranged that the two large parlors, a smaller one and the dining room can by a system of doors sliding into the walls be thrown into one apartment, large enough to entertain a dancing party of one hundred couples. The house con-tains fifteen rooms, all finished in oak and furnished in harmony. Probably more newspaper men own, or partially own, their own homes in Chicago than in any other city in the Union. Leo Canman, better known as "Bismarck," the veteran railroad editor of The Tribune, has a cozy place on the North Side. John McQ-ove- has a beautiful home on the WestSide. "Biff" Hall, of Turn Over club fame, is build-ing a nest fronting the lake on the South Side. Sam T. Clover and several other members of the Press club will start a . . '' " - Jk .... ' the statement that out of business hours Mr. James W. Scott is likely to be found at 149 Pine street. Mr. Scott is publisher of The Chicago Herald and The Chicago Evening Post. His residence is a mile north of that of "his contemporary of The Tribune, and in just as quiet a re-gion. It is built of Indiana gray stone, and is three stories and basement in height. Having the advantage of the corner location, its numerous windows on the north look out upon Chicago ave-nue, while from those of the west one can see the big water works tower and the handsome grounds that surround it. Two blocks above the tower is the en- -, trance to Lincoln park. The residence has Bixteeu large rooms, every one of which, thanks to Mrs. Scott's genius aa a housekeeper, is a picture in itself.' The narrow strip of lawn which runs from the basement window to the roadway, although cut in two by the sidewalk, is as green as grass can be, and undergoes the operation of clipping every forty eight hours. - It is now over two years since William Penn Nixon, the presiding genius of the Inter-Ocea- n, gave the house warming which inaugurated his removal to his present abode. This is a handsome structure of blue Bedford stone, and is located at 743 North Clark street, which is within a few steps of Lincoln park, Jn architecture it follows something after the Gothic Adjoining ft is the residence of , Dr. Nixon, brother to the ' ' WHERE HR. lrntON LIVES. editor, and as both edifices were built of the same materials, and after the same . plans, the exterior presents the appear-ance of a single dwelling. Mr. Nixon's half has twelve rooms, one of which con-tains one of the .no raluable librarip to be found in the state. The house, in-cluding the ground upon which it stands, represents an investment of something like $26,000. Victor A. Lawson, proprietor of The Morning and Evening News, makes his home at 817 La Salle avenue.
