The property is situated upon the hill above Ked Cliff, and is an old one. It was located some ten years ago by a number of Leadville parties who, doubting its ultimate value, with-drew one after another until Jim Bur-iiel- l, late owner in tho Denver News, and his partner were the only ones of the original locators left in ir. In 18H! the property was sold to W. F. Lay and others of Baltimore, and Jim Burnell was provided with a foundation for his subsequent prosperity. Ho purchased an interest in the News, and while tho new owners of the Iron Mask were enriching their own pockets tho growth of Denver and con-sequent growth of tho Xewg was en-riching him. It is an immense lead mine with varying amounts of silver and has been' very essential to the steady operation of the CoWodo smelter. Mr. Dan C. Robbins has returned after a voyage to the south where he made a number of locations on the gold belt that promise, with develop-ment, to yield handsome results. The formation is in tho lime and a large troop of prospectors are driving their stakes. An important strike is reported in the Viola mine at Iiadger Creek, where, about a yenr ago, a largo deposit of lead was disclosed and since which time a large amount of work has been performed. Tho property is owned by Messrs. Lyman it Wallace ot this city and C. Hunting of lUackfoot, and there is a possibility of a smelter being erected there. The Christy and Stormont companies of Silver Reef are said to have turned out a large amount of ore during the season, the average value of the ore in the former being 1!7 ounces. A BLOODLESS DUEL THE STORMY MEETINC ON MAIN AT BREAK OF DAY. An Old Lots Afnlr Affaln Fans lUelf Into a FIrui That Threatens to Culminate in Woodihed Tba Flril Itound. Without any foot lights save those that issued from the street hanging lamp, another act in a tragedy that promises to be carried to an indefinite end was presented at tho corner of Second South and Main at an early hour yesterday morning. The affair had been brewing for several days and embraces an interesting cast. Some days ago a fellow giving his name at police headiinarters as Kickhurst came to the city and at once began to fill his cuticle with rare old rye. lie had a wrong that is an imaginary wrong to avenge. He had lost his loved ouo right at tho alter. Residing in Colorado he wooed and 'won her in Colorado style. It was decided that they should occupy the same yacht through life but like a slobbering imbecile he started on a career of dissipa-tion and she jilted him. In the meantime the gentleman from Zion stepped with majestic step on the ground and, pressing a hasty suit, they were married. They returned to the land of saints and hero moored them-selves. Is'ow comes tho jilied and re-jected idolater who, by his over maud-lin folly, liberated tho dark-eye- sor-ceress, ami began to haunt and dog the steps of his rival. They met in a popu-lar resort, and while tho spark of deadly animosity had not yet burst into the lurid llame that lightsup the scene at present, they drank together. All the whilo jealousy was fanning the sluggish flame, and on Sunday morn-ing it burst forth with intense fury. Staggering under a heavy load of liquor, the rejected lover bolted Into a saloon that was still keeping open its portals for the accommodation of the nymphs and notables who had been at the birthday party and finding his rival there, asked him to drink. The latter declined. It was a withering de-cline. A declination in fact, that liter-ally smoked with superb contempt. This was mora than his civillcttes could endure, aud seeking the. rear of the gin mill he selected his weapon a four pound rock. Back into tho arena lie strided and a tragedy was about to ensue, when the successful rival drew his little pop and put it in the teeth of the gentleman who tied to the street followed by his intended victim. At the intersection of Seeoud South and Main Kickhur-- t was over-taken and felled to tho ground, after which he was permitted to escape. At the corner of Third South and Main he ran into the embrace of one of the finest and at present languishes in tho re-cesses of tho city jail. This is but ono more (chapter in an affair that contem-plates bloodshed. .
