Show 111. Ml. ! i PUNCHING y ' lm THE BAG AL. A B LETT U. S. Mines' team is about to em bark on another season with a well balanced ball club. They have some new faces to show the fans this year and my opinion is that they will be on Improvement, lhe team won the second half last year, so this year's team will have something some-thing to shoot at. Here is the way I think the boys will line up when the starter's gun send them away from the barrier: Johnny Reed at first base. This boy U one of the finest fielders In the league and his hittlnc improved one hundred , per cent last year. If Johnny can keep up the pace he set last year at the plate, he will be " ranked with the best. Tony Krlssman at second. Tony played short last year and the throw was a bit too long. Tony is a good enough fielder,' so the short throw from second will help. Maybe they will have to hustle on the double play. Tony is a pretty fair hitter when the checks are down. , "".Hancy. 'at. short This boy is a newcomer to Industrial League ball, but he-won-hi : promotion- by-tho way he played for Midvale in the amateur's last season. Handles himself him-self Veil on ground balls and he hit plenty last year. I think the only "if" to this boy will be his hitting. Industrial league . pitching is a lot tougher. Myers at third. Joe Is one of the best third lackers in the league. He has a sood pair of hands, and he can shot sun that apple across the infield. His hlttinr leaves nothing to be desired, de-sired, lit Is danrerous as lone as he has one strike left A power hitter if their ever was one. Joe's only trouble has been the Injury Jinx. The outfield I think will shape up with George Sluga in left. Sluga is a sewcomer from Helper. He is a big boy, handles himself in fine shape both in the field and at the plate, a cinch to make good. Dee Mattson In center. This ( little fellow needs no introduc- i tion. The fans around the league know him as a star for j the past three years. Dee only weighs about 140 pounds but he can sure nudge that seed a long way and go for a country mile : for a fly ball. Rodney Adams I think will be in right. A Bingham boy that should find himself this year. Rod's only trouble has been that he never played in one position long enough to become acquainted with it A dead right field hitter but plenty tough to get out. Bulk of the catching- will be handled by Gates, a fellow that has been around for quite a while, but this is his first year In this league. He has been with Satin, the best team In southern south-ern Utah for three or four seasons sea-sons and has always been a star. I think Gates will get by In this : league without much trouble. ' Davis and Delaney are the other catchers. Mclvor and Shepherd will again head the mound corps. Mack just seems to go on . forever, j He is managing the team this year. Here is a fellow who knows all the answers in basebalt At "his best when the going gets rough. ' Frank Shepherd Is a good right hinder when he U In the mood to pitch. He Is a horse for work, so with some help this year Frank should have a good year. - They have two strangers in Hicks and Thomas. Hicks comes to them with a pretty fair- record from Butte, Montana! But I don't know anything about .Thomas. He has nice form out there and what- else I can't say,. .-..T. With this line-up they will have a well balanced club. en-that en-that will give every club ln the league trouble. H they don't win the flag they will have a great deal to say aboul whe does. , " "y : Yours 'till the umpires run me , out. , - Al |
