Show RIE RESOURCES SOURCES OF NEVADA i just now when so many utah men aye are interested te in iff mining enterprises in nevada the battle born state the following article on the mineral resources of this commonwealth taken from the mining and scientific press of san francisco will doubtless prove interesting to REVIEW readers the press says the great basin comprises a vast tract of country lying between the continental divide of the rocky mountain system on the east and the sierra nevada on the west the greater portion of this territory is covered by the states of utah tah and nevada nev ada so frequently are all allusions unions made to the sagebrush plains of nevada that many have conceived the 7 7 ta Z pa 11 A Os 47 ekl A WILT MINING CAMP OF AUSTIN LANDER COUNTY NEVADA idea that nevada consists of broad nearly level plains of sand and alkali dotted with a sparse growth of the hardy sagebrush this conclusion is erroneous for the topography of the state is rugged it is ribbed with a series of mountain chains extending generally in a northerly and southerly direction with deep and fertile valleys between the soil is fertile and only requires irrigation to make it wonderfully productive its mineral resources have been proven abundantly they include gold silver lead copper iron and numerous other minerals of economic value the great mines of the comstock lode have never been equalled equal led for richness and extent elsewhere this one great vein has as been credited with a production of nearly half a billion dollars in gold and silver in the eureka di district 1 S in gold rold silver and lead has been produced adding to the wealth of the world and the state and also to its fame this enormous mineral wealth has been obtained chiefly from high grade ores the jess valuable ores still remaining but as aa this is an acre age of extensive operation opera tion on low grado grade material the large deposits of this character still in these mines may soon add largely 13 to nevadas already large production austin in the early was one of the most prosperous mining towns in the west not less than was taken from the veins of lander county As is the case at eureka the rich ores have produced most of the output and the low grade remains for the present and future generations to make avail able there are also albo tuscarora white pine and pioche all populous and prosperous mining towns in their time with every probability that at no very distant day the activity of the past may be renewed and and a prosperity more enduring than before established in esmeralda county new new mining camps are springing into inta life and a stream of copper and gold is being sent out from newly discovered mines and from old ones now worked for the first time at an advantage the idea has become prevalent that nevada haskines has mines of silver only this is a mistake for all the silver producing mines are producers of gold also and in some sections the gold largely predominates ten years ago there were but two or three gold mines operating strictly speaking in arizona today da arizona has gold mines in every county and them laroe large laro e and rich the same condition obtains in nevada today as was found in arizona in 1890 J X R DeLamar has gone gone into nevada depending on his own judgment and not on hearsay or tradition and has proven that a rich gold mine existed in lincoln county where none was supposed to be found there is a drawback to the more rapid advancement of the development of nevadas resources and that is a lack of railways the natural tendency is for railroads to build in an easterly and westerly direction through the great undeveloped west but as previously stated the topography of the country renders this a hardship as it necessitates climbing over one range of mountains after another which aich is expensive railroads may readily be built in a northerly and southerly direction in the valleys however and in time this thia will be done rendering more easily accessible ces sible nevadas mineral resources there are still to be found great veins of lead and zinc carrying silver and prospectors prospectors are finding valuable copper deposits but when the active search for gold begins without doubt nevada will produce gold mines mined as readily as utah or arizona on this page are illustrations of some typical mining scenes in some of the most famous of nevadas mining districts and also ad an engraving of austin in lander county surrounded by hills honeycombed in the progress of the industry that gave the state its fame hon B R G C chambers has returned from a visit east and west and is feeling in excellent health |
