Show ROUND MO MOUNTAIN THE CAMP WITH THE GOODS BY T C PARKER OUR SPECIAL representative As a camp that delivers the goods round mountain nevada stands without a peer in this state of phenomenal productions b it is in a class by itself though little over a year old it has more than a dozen producing mines many of which have been in pay ore from the surface down it is safe to say that no district in the state state has had a more wonderful record at the same period in its history and when producing mines are mentioned in connect tion with round mountain the expression is used to denote mines that are actual shippers of ore and ore that runs away up into the thousands at that not nor mines that could ship or that merely have ore in sight but producers in the present tense and actually as well as potentially two twenty ton mills have been erected and have been in constant operation era tion to the extent or their capacity ever since their completion the erection of others is planned and they will be in course of construction in a short time the town of round mo mountain which has a population of about people has a bank a number of good stores a live and up to date newspaper a stock exchange and a first class hotel the visitor is impressed though not surprised at the confidence fi dence manifested by the business nin men of the tow town in the f future of the district distef ct and this confidence at once explains to him the secret of the substantial progress apparent on every hand location of round mountain the new round mountain mining district is situated in the northwest portion of nye county between the and ranges of mountains and about sixteen miles north of manhattan it pom arnes arises what was formerly known as the jefferson district which was famous nearly forty years ago as a silver camp the old jefferson mine alone having produced over the recent rich gold strikes however have been made about five miles to the so south uth and west on a 0 great porphyry hill known for its symmetrical contour as round Aloun mountain tain and from which the district receives its name history of the camp to those familiar with the important events of recent date in the history of nevada which have attracted to the state the attention of the entire mining world the story of the discovery and development of round mountain must be measurably well known but even to them most qui vive history is made so fast in nevada as to become confusing so that therefore we assume that a brief sketchy sketch of the history of this wonderful gold camp will te be of interest to all round mountain came into being as a bonanza camp caffie in the early part of march 1906 prior to that time the only opera eions denoting actie 9 4 W IN 4 V e is known as stebbins hill for a syndicate composed of pittsburg capitalists in february mr gordon had located the sun su n group of three claims on the southern slope of round mountain on the second day of the following march L R scott and luther morgan while prospecting the ground came across rich pieces ot float carrying free gold by making numerous bannings pann ings which yielded good colors they were enabled to trace the values to the ledge further up the hillside the news of the strike soon became known in manhattan which place was in the midst of a boom at that time and a stampede ensued which resulted in the locating of 0 the entire surrounding country ciany many of the groups have since p passed assed into the hands of larger interests and on being r opened up have disclosed great wealth these the se will be the subject of special mention elsewhere in this article it is worthy of note that round mountain has furnished some of the finest specimens of free gold ever discovered in the state and many of the mines have not only paid for their working from the very start interesting bit of history which if recorded in full would fill many pages and read like a romance it was away back in the seventies about the time the comstock elec electrified trifled the world and made nevada the one bright star in the mining firmament ot of that time that the old jefferson camp was at the height of its glory the jefferson mine which became abandoned soon after A i P am M 5 q 4 7 20 A nn n 1 1 1 API ar anz the round mountain homestake Home stake mine but have subterranean channels safeguarded by the massive and all but impenetrable walls 0 of stone as is her wont the marvel is that in this camp of incomparable wealth where the gold cames comes up from the bowels of the earth in virgin purity to greet and astonish the eyes of man there has never occurred what would pass in in m mining ning par parlance lanca as a boom enste instead id there has been only a steady healthy growth the right psychological conditions necessary to project a boom do not seem to have obtained innumerable num erable mining booms have grown out of discoveries which compared to those of round mountain would be but drops of water in the ocean the human mind is hedged by certain bounds beyond which it cannot go and when required to do so it refuses to act thus when it is confronted confront ed with a phenomena of nature greater than it can grasp it becomes dazed the lover of nature who becomes enthused over a babbling brook views in silence the great cataract thus also we are inclined to doubt that which strikes us as being out of the ordinary so it may be that the people of 0 f round mountain themselves have not quite grasped the fullness of their good fortune though we are disposed to believe that some of them do measurably so at least the representative of the salt lake mining review who recently visited the round Moun mountain thin district came across an the decline in the price of silver had produced within a period of eighteen months among those who had become attracted to the then famous camp were charles J Kanro hat and charles harrison they each located a group of claims on opposite sides of jefferson canyon and set to work to open them up each developing his own property single handed and alone when silver declined the camp became
