Show BLACK OR MINERAL WAX the statement has been reiterated time and time again and without any question having been raised as to its accuracy that utah as a state abounds in every known mineral metal and commodity with the exception of tin tin strictly speaking because of the restricted area and locality of its occurrence is a rare metal rare as it is however it is no more so than black or mineral wax the existence of lustrous and susceptible of a high polish there are many uses to which black or mineral wax can be and is being employed without the addition of any foreign substance it makes an excellent sealing wax As its mark is indel lible and water proof it can be used in the manufacture of pencils it is used in connection with paints and varnishes as a protective agent and in insulation and installation in of the worlds supply and for this special purpose it is in urgent demand at 35 cents a pound it is also used to give a hard surface to varnish and as a covering for submerged masonry being impervious to water and its use would extend to thousands of other purposes were the supply equal to the demand in the worlds supply at the present time there is not over fifteen tons of black on the mar in 77 J 77 TM Q elff 71 partial view of colton utah hoisting plant and works of the co copany company pany which on the american continent is confined solely to utah and there is but one portion of the state in which it is found at colton and its near neighborhood so prolific in its measures of hydrocarbons and other useful and commercial commodities and here it exists in almost unlimited quantity and of the highest grade in the crude this often occurs 95 per cent pure and refined it lacks only 1 per cent of pur ity in color it is jet black and is very electrical appliances and works it competes with pure rubber in various ways the difference in prices and cost being so much in its favor compared with the high price paid for rubber that it will greatly displace the use of this latter commodity when the production of shall become greater than it now is it will hold acids that glass cannot retain it is used for polishing leather the demand for black in this line alone being in excess 17 ket and yet there is an almost unlimited demand for this rare commodity at figures ranging from to per ton according inato to quality and use for the refined product THE UTAH CO from the above it will be seen that black in any country existing in quantity would be a veritable gold mine to the fortunate owners of such deposits that any section controlling the production of this rare commodity is as richly blessed as if possessed of mines productive of the precious metals and especially so when the statement is made that in the handling of an mine but only limited capital is required compared to the vast outlay usually expended in the development of properties productive of gold and silver and of the baser metals for this reason the utah company of salt lake owning and operating a black mine at colton feels that it is possessed of a proposition that will soon yield them large returns upon a slight investment and in this opinion they are joined by the editor of the mining review who recently made an inspection of the companas comp anys promising and valuable holdings so admirably and conveniently located on one of the main railroad thoroughfares of the west sixteen months ago through the efforts of C W shores mark P braffet and associates socia tes the utah company was feet about the only indication of the existence of or any other metal or mineral existing in that locality being a change in the color of the soil which in this locality and along the strike of the vein is of a lighter hue while here and there along the surface thin sheets of shooting to the surface have crumbled to pieces and scattered the hill sides with float mineral wax as erosion took place the country rock is generally sandstone the vein being a true fissure which is absolutely true in its course the vein filling is soft clays petrifactions petri factions of bones and shells limestone etc the deposits resulting from fumes from oils below presumably judging from occurrences similarly sim ilary accounted for in bohemia the fumes bearing in suspension so to speak filling every crevice and interstice in the vein the wax condensing into its present form the black lustre of the product being due to coloring matter absorbed from the earth and necessary for successful operation the way of development and production EXTENT OF production N with its present equipment and facilities L the company can make a daily output at tea t present time of fifty tons of crud ore or daily which will yield pounds of f re e fined war of a value approximately of 1000 and it is confidently expected that this will be the minimum daily output when the company has installed the proposed plant for the reduction of its ores METHOD OF REDUCTION so far the companas comp anys ore has been treated at the howe mill at colton located about a third of a mile from the mine this plant which is owned by a new york company has a daily capacity of seven tons of crude ore and yet with this limited capacity the ore it has treated for the utah company has resulted in an output of pounds of refined wax which is now on hand sacked see accompanying A W or 4 FBI AM pounds of refined wax sacked cakes of pure wax showing the howe mill where the has been refined formed for the exploitation and development of deposits at colton at that time the company had but twenty acres upon which to begin operations but since that time the association has added to its holdings until it now owns and controls a mile on the strike of the vein which varies from five to twelve feet in width with a general average of eight feet this great vein carries on an average of 35 per cent in black or practically 20 a ton although in many instances the crude product runs as high as 60 per cent to the ton stratas of pure wax frequently occurring in the vein which are from two inches to four feet in width GEOLOGY AND FORMATION to the geologist the country round about colton presents a most interesting study gently undulating and with no 9 marked evidence of the exist existence enec of mineral present this locality has been overrun by the prospector and mining man for years without his even suspecting that better than a gold mine were beneath his development AND EQUIPMENT in the development of its colton property the utah company has sunk a working shaft and manway to a depth of feet this shaft is substantially timbered as also are all of the workings of the mine wherever necessary drifts have been run on the vein both ways from the forty five and foot levels this work in all amounting to about feet all the workings showing faces of ore ranging from three to ten feet in width while the vein has been opened and exposed in half a dozen places along its course for a distance of eighty rods thus proving its continuity and strength in the way of equipment of mine the present needs of the property are fully provided for the working shaft is covered by a substantial power house in which are installed a forty horse power boiler a first class hoist a no 7 cameron pump etc T V jackson being the engineer in charge while included in the equipment are ore cars ore bins and everything needed tion ready for shipment and the market the lot being worth the reduction process is simple in the extreme and nominally inexpensive the method of treatment consisting of the agitation of the crushed ore in heated water whereby the foreign matter is precipitated to the bottom of the vats the wax in liquid form floating on the surface sulphuric acid is used as a precipitant and the liquid wax is floated off through faucets into pans or moulds of proper size where after cooling it takes the form of blocks or cakes weighing about thirty pounds each when it is ready for sacking and the n market arket the cost of treatment at the proposed new mill will be in the neighborhood of 2 per crude ton of ore while mining expenses including everything will not exceed 3 per ton the crude ore valuation being 20 15 a a ton thus leaving a net return of ton a handsome profit LOCATION AND facilities the works of the utah company of the are located in the very midst the main line of little town of colton on the rio grande railroad ninety six miles southeasterly from salt lake city the shaft house is within feet from the railroad and but feet from the price river the mountains in the near vicinity are well timbered so that timbers for mining purposes are easily obtainable coal for fuel costs but per ton which is an important factor in economical operation and the water developed in the mine is sufficient in quantity for boiler and all mill purposes in many ways the company is particularly favored no long or expensive hauls are required and as the new mill will be built in close proximity to the shaft house no extra handling of the ore from mine to mill will be required as this will be done automatically and at a trifling expense then again being right in town mining enterprise viz A property of merit and value competent management and the necessary means for development and equipment there is no question as to the first requirement the these second condis is all that could be desired and there is no doubt as to the ability of the company to meet the third condition the personnel of the company is first class and the aggregation is a strong one the official roster of the association being as follows B F caffey president C W shores vice president M P braffet secretary and treasurer C L maxwell and H A nelson while included in the heavy stockholders are the following W H myers general sales agent C W shores special agent and M P braffet attorney for the utah fuel company A H cowie president and H A nelson general manager wasatch store company B A t 4 4 0 ow 7 it A flashlight showing full face of no boarding house or other accommodations will be required for the employed emp loyes of the company usually numbering from eleven to twenty three men the depot is close by with its speedy means of rapid communication with the outside world so that every advantage and facility exists for economical and successful operation and these conditions together with other important factors connected with this enterprise have inspired the company with the conviction that it will no be long now before systematic operation and development will place its property upon a regular producing and dividend paying basis A STRONG COMPANY As previously stated in the columns of the mining review three factors are necessary in the successful outcome of any F caffey one of the pioneers and former owners of the famous annie laurie gold mine in gold mountain district E W love lovejoy joy of mulvey co judge W H and sam A king harry and cover all necessary development work and mine equipment thus placing the property on a regular producing and paying basis from all indications it is evident that the production of black will take rank as one of the important industries of utah the enterprise of the utah company is certainly surrounded with many mahy favorable conditions and it is an attractive one to the insider and outsider
