by the dundr hundreds eds A month ago there were scarcely a corporals guard in this grand old camp A week ago more than treasure seekers were prospecting in this locality for stores of hidden wealth and now that the fever is on the tide in this direction is rapidly swelling and capitalists and prospectors are joining hands in the endeavor to pry into dame natures most secret treasure vau vaults its in this ancient and highly productive camp if one were to make a trip into eldorado canyon he would gaze with astonishment at the wealth that is but waiting to be taken out he would see where for years old prospectors have gouged about on the surface and have taken out millions it is truly incredible that such possibilities have been neglected for these many many years this is a district that has produced many millions but which was abandoned before its vast deposits of mineral wealth had barely been scratched but at last its merits are being appreciated and the old canyon is being rejuvenated the adverse conditions street and bonanzas the company owns two mines in this neighborhood embracing three claims and a fraction the buster honest miner and wedge fraction mine no 1 on the buster claim adjoins the on the west through this claim can be traced the buster r vein of the which is now sloped to a depth of feet and which has produced 2000 on the buster three shafts have been sunk all in ore to the respective depths of buster is mine no 2 owned also by the blackhawk company this group embraces the rand honest miner and wedge fraction the famous old wall street which lies between has produced with the greatest depth attained in its operation not exceeding feet from these claims the company expects to realize the bulk of re returns in the precious metals on the honest miner there are three distinct veins the first the quaker city vein is an extension Z ka X I 1 L n underground IN THE WALL STREET MINE SHAFT no 2 ON THE BUSTER VEIN MINE no 1 SCENE AT THE WALL STREET by eastern people the company is organized with a capitalize 70 and 85 feet the second will be the main working shaft and here the mill will be erected A careful estimate of the ore in sight in this mine gives a tonnage that promises to keep the mill in operation for a period of two years at least and other portions of the property will be developed in the meantime recent work on the lechat dicu canyon lincoln county nevada and are near neighbors of the famous wall gold ore this is joyful news to the blackhawk people the ore found in shaft no 2 on the buster will average 15 in gold to the ton while on the dump there are tons going 20 in gold which was considered in the early history of the district as being too low in grade to mill but which can now be handled at a handsome profit the general values of the ore at this point show four fifths gold and one fifth silver about two and a quarter miles from the will work the wall street that the eldorado district is bound to come to the front cannot now be doubted several large companies are taking hold in this district and claims are being staked off in every direction joseph warton who has owned property in eldorado for several years is soon to begin extensive operations and will develop his properties to great depth mr wharton owns the wall street and quaker city mines besides nur numerous nerous other prop properties arties in that locality the roberts group about two and a half miles to the south of the wall street in the knob hill section of eldorado district is the roberts group of claims which were worked fourteen years ago and in a very crude manner the greater portion of the work was performed upon the silver legion claim and enough development work was done to prove the worth and merit of the property on this claim a seventy foot shaft was sunk and a seventy five foot incline all in ore and a four foot ore body averaging 30 to the ton is now exposed altogether there are about feet of underground workings from which considerable ore has been taken while sus sui face rock running as high as 1000 to the ton has been found the ores in this portion of the canyon gradually become more base a and nd the greater part is in the form of sulphides sulp hides worked along against such overwhelming odds and so many obstacles early in 1864 the eldorado canyon mining company company purchased the mine but little was accomplished and in 1879 it was sold to the southwest mining company for this company resumed the work and continued to take out the golden treasure for which this property is so justly noted until about the year 1895 since which time the property has lain idle sometime between the years 1879 and 1895 john powers the original discoverer and locator of the camp sold the wall quaker city tough nut and mocking bird claims to eastern parties work in the operation of these properties continued for a period of seventeen years and millions in gold were taken from surface workings since the abandonment of these old mines minds some work has been carried on from time to time in a desultory way but scarcely any ore was milled if with the crude methods and crude undoubtedly develop into as famous a mine as its neighbor on the west the owners of the many other promising claims in this locality will now be able to work them profitably because of changed and more favorable conditions and the further fact that from now on they will be aided by the outside capital which is seeking investment in this most promis promising ing dis brict new life and activity the new life and activity now so noticeable ti in eldorado canyon will bring joy to the hearts of the old timers there and who for so many years have patiently chinery then used and employed the difficult and expensive means of transportation and the lack of water oooo could b bu L realized in the early history of eldorado canyon what should the colv conveniences of in modern adern mining and a news new railroad produce for for seventeen years the stamps pounded away in the near vicinity of the color colorado ado river for it was here that the reduction plants of the district were located and the immense bodies of ore in the mines were but barely touched to keep up the necessary 0 output there was not a piece of mining machinery in the camp the ore was hois hoisted t by means mean s of hand windlasses wind lasses and on the backs of indians an and d then hauled nine had th the e for milling miles to the river pioneers of the district only known it a sufficient supply of water was at hand and right at the mines and yet fortunes were squandered in useless transportation tion nothing but the very richest ore was touched or handled and the ric rich h pay streak was followed through magnificent bodies of fine milling rock A fortune alone was n necessary aces to get supplies into the camp su supplies P purchased in san francisco were tak en around on water by the way of the gulf of california and then taken up the colorado river in flat boats and then hauled to bo the mines such were the conditions in the early days of the camp what are they now the new salt lake route passes within easy freighting distance of the canyon and should the district develop as conditions and indications now promise a branch road will surely place the camp into immediate touch with the outside world thus two markets are opened to this section salt lake and los angeles the water question has been solved and mills may now be erected at the mines A new townsite called nelson has been opened up and the conveniences of a city and post office for the camp are assured outside capital has been interested in the mines of eldorado cantou the old lethargy has been shaken off and anda a new eraci
