another city the me Itro polis of the desert the PO possibilities of this great section shave have long been known but the difficulties of transportation have rendered development long and uncertain but with the advent of the salt lake route these conditions have been entirely changed and in the development of this new country las vegas is surely the legitimate center the town of los vegas is located almost in the center of an immense valley which is from forty to fifty miles in width and about sixty miles long the valley was named las vegas the meadows by the spanish monks early in the eighties later the first mormon emigrant train stopped the main division point between salt lake and los angeles and as such will be an important railroad center the companas comp anys shops will be built here and also the round houses and freight depots here the great oil burners which toil up from the pacific will be laid off for a well earned rest and locomotives burning coal will take up the journey on to salt lake armour company the great beef packers are erecting a large ice plant and cold storage houses here and will furnish ice for refrigerator ref cars and supply almost unlimited facilities for cold storage the water waier for this plant is supplied from the famous vegas springs about three miles to the west the railroad company is now platting a townsite on a splendid piece of land which will be thrown open to the public upon the completion and opening of the road the town is also alio to have i a new bank the building for which has just been completed this enterprise under the name of the las la s vegas loan trust company is composed of some of the best known men in los angeles ge iles with such people as C D york J S Johns johnston fon W D wilson geo P F and W F botsford president of the los angeles american national bank behind it las vegas will surely have solid financial backing walter joy the expert assayer and chemist has opened an assay office and laboratory here and is prepared to handle almost anything in the ore testing line grudens Pru dens stage line now makes its weekly trip to bullfrog every thursday trains leaving salt lake on monday evening will make good connection with the stage and travelers will reach bullfrog friday evening evenin of the same week the water supply at las vegas is practically unlimited to the west about three recalled calletto to utah and so abandoned their newfound homes homed and wealth but the possibilities here were too great to be overlooked ind and soon the land was put under cultivation and work at the mines was resumed by hardy home seekers and prospectors the stewart ranch comprising over 1800 acres anade ade the valley blossom like the rose and agany any semitropical semi tropical fruits were successfully brown such a perfect climate such a fertile 1 l together with the prospect of almost unrivaled mineral wealth were bound sooner or later to attract attention and the san pedro edro los lbs angeles salt lake railroad company company decided to open up this great undeveloped developed region to the markets of the world since the completion of the new road thousands of people have gone into this sec pion cioll and a promising little town soon lining sprung up las vegas will undoubtedly be about half a mile north of the railroad station is the townsite owned hy by J T mcwilliams this has been open for several months and the lots have been selling rapidly A flourishing town has grown up here and the hum of life and activity pervades the place the general outlook for business is very good and those on the field contemplate great things for the future As the center of a great mining region e las vegas will naturally grow into a large supply station the outfitter need have no fears about getting anything he wants at las vegas at prices remarkably reasonable there are several supply stores here crowell allott and fred kremer carrying an espee especially ally large stock of goods J R newberry co are now erecting a general store which will be one 0 of f the largest in that section the san pedro ro road a ll 11 also has a large supply store which is managed by dr bracken formerly of bingham utah in the furniture line roy L butler carries a large and finely assorted stock and is constantly shipping in new goods of the very best and flows through the valley in a beautiful little stream there are numerous other smaller springs throughout the valley and water can be obtained anywhere by sinking from seven to twelve feet As yet no wells have been sunk to any depth but it seems almost certain that ar hesion wells should be encountered without much mu eh trouble or expense should such be the case the las vegas valley as an agricultural section would stand second to none in the west the soil is admirably adapted to the culture of almost every variety of semitropical semi tropical fruit all the power necessary to pump an unlimited supply of water could be had at the colorado river about forty m miles iles to the east an enormous amount of electric power could be generated on f the he colorado and transmitted to las vegas for all uses L L nunn of the telluride power company recently passed through the vegas country and commented upon the possibility of such a plant that water is all thal thai is needed to cover this valley with vegetation is shown by the las vegas ranch this ranch was purchased by senator william A dark clark from the stewarts for and in this beautiful spot the senator proposes to erect a sanitarium the railroad company is now putting in a pipeline from cottonwood springs seventeen miles distant to furnish the town with a water supply and pressure the business men of las vegas are energetic and pushing and intend to make of vegas the foremost town along the salt lake route the las vegas protection league has been organized for the purpose of suppressing lawlessness and for the general welfare of the community frank H stewart is president of this organization and roy L butler is secretary aside from its importance as a railroad division and agricultural section las vegas is the natural distributing point for a vast mining territory one hundred and twenty six miles to the northwest is the famous new camp of bullfrog and freight and stage lines are running regularly to this new camp from las vegas to the west are the camps of up and ninety nine which have produced some wonderfully rich copper ore the shenandoah and the hoosier boy groups in the same range almost directly west of vegas are huge quantities of excellent sandstone A san Francl francisco ko company is now working the property and taking out slabs of fine building stone in almost every color on charlton mountain in the northwest are thousands of acres of timber land and a large supply of water in the mountains to the east are vast deposits of gypsum and mines of turquoise gems the famous old camp of el dorado is ds about forty miles to the southeast with searchlight twenty two miles beyond to the south in the mountains surrounding the valley are many mines that have paid dividends but the country in general has never been thoroughly a large body of high grade ore has but recently been opened up in the yellow pine district of the potosi range we find the camp of goode springs with its myriad of surrounding mines in this range twenty fie miles south ewest of las vegas is the old potosi mine which was worked in 1855 by the cormons mormons Mor mons this mine was recently sold by james kennelly of salt lake to the mahoney brothers also of salt lake for A dozen sacks of very high grade ore are now at the station of arden and ore wagons are being placed in service to insure regular shipments from this mine to the salt lake smelters shelters sm elters among the mines in this district which have been considerably developed are the keystone green monster owned by mrs hearst the ruth may kerby cinnabar red cloud columbus alice K copper queen shamrock and the shoofly groups owned by the kennelly boys then there is the double afforded by the salt lake route las vegas should rapidly develop into a flourishing
