Show SOMETHING ABOUT NEVADA to those who are not familiar with the mining industry of the west the reports of wonderful finds in nevada of late of the wonderful bonanzas 7 that have made poor men mining magnates and millionaires almost within a day seem almost beyond reason and scarcely credible the recent discoveries of wonderfully rich mines in nye and esmeralda counties are of a character that cannot help but excite the most skeptical and the history of these finds when trimmed and pared down with exaggerations eliminated and put into cold type reads like a fairy tale arid yet these discoveries these finds in their immensity men sity in their value eclipse the marvelous gold finds in the klondike of alaska a few years ago and which caused a thrill of excitement to creep up and down the spinal column of the business and commercial world for a period of several years and the thrill chril I 1 still continues although in a somewhat modified form but the klondike excitement cit ement compared to the wave of mining interest that is spreading over the american continent because of the gold and silver dis co veries made so recently in nevada bids fairno fair to be dwarfed into insignificance and the indications are that thousands will go 90 into nevada during the next twelve months where hundreds penetrated the wilds of alaska during a similar period As a matter of fact the rush to nevada has already begun and special trains with treasure seekers aboard according to press dispatches are now heading this way from the east and middle west and more will follow as soon as spring weather has fairly set in in this rush nevada has several ev advantages over the klondike in the early days of its discovery its location is accessible from almost every point of the compass and its leading camps are only from twenty five to miles from railroad points while the hardships incident to the trip into the new districts are slight compared to the danger and toll toil attending the pilgrimage to the wonderful alaska gold diggings soon after their discovery and the necessities and even the luxuries of life attend the man who is bent upon investigating into the reported mineral wealth of southern and other portions of nevada it is difficult to form any estimate of the number who will visit nevada mining camps this year in the last issue of the mining review it was stated that an inrush of was looked for but this esti mate begins to look small in view of the fact that about half this number is taking advantage of the first excursions that the railroads are running to this wonderful land of gold and silver galore to many nevada has always seemed as far distant from points of business and commercial centers as are the sandwich islands A greater mistake was never made and a more erroneous impression never prevailed nevada is in the united states of america it is bounded on the east by utah on the north by idaho and oregon and it is girded on the west the southwest and on the south by california and arizona it is an empire in itself it has its deserts its mountains its rivers and its streams its forests and its rich valley land its mineral belts and zones are largely connner to its mountain fastnesses fast nesses and to its deserts and this is why so few have heard of the beautiful and fertile portions of the state as the lust for gold takes the aver average age traveler the eastern visitor into the sterile mountains and out into the parched deserts but as it is into the desolate regions of the state that one must go in search of hidden treasures it is in these regions that most wonderful strikes have been made of late it is well to state however that the present rush to the scenes of these recent enticing gold and silver discoveries is not the first stampede of this character that nevada has experienced for in the early sixties old storey county was the mecca towards which all roads led and the grand old comstock lode at virginia city contributed tri buted over to the worlds sup ply of imperishable wealth up to the time of the of silver in while other counties of the state up to this period were also fruitful their entire re corded output combined with the product of the mines of the comstock amounting to something like the brodu tion in detail being as follows i churchill county i eureka county douglass county elko eiko county Bs Es meralda smeralda county t s humboldt county I 1 lander county lincoln county lyon county nye county ormsby county a storey county white pine county 1 washoe county total if nevada in its younger days was adle to produce over one and a half billions in the precious metals it is evident that the new camps of the state will have to hustle a little to beat this magnificent record d and yet it is believed that the old time output of old camps will be more than duplicated by the younger districts and it is because of this belief that the great nevada r ush rush is now on as there is every reason to claim i that the old battle born state has barely been prospected as yet and that for many many years to come it will yield up its treasures making fortunes for poor men and adding immensely to the bank account of those who already have riches |
