Show i I 1 some mines on WOLF wax eargle 2 I 1 i ISO THE LUCKY FRIDAY along to the south of the cumberland on the same vein is located the lucky fri day mine owned by the south sinker min ing company of which tim shay of boise is president R R kuss of silver city vice president Ps ident S D mclain of boise secretary and J D deming of silver city is manager p and superintendent in charge of the w work ork I 1 at the mine the tunnel enters the moun tail in at almost the waters edge in sinker gulch where an abundance of water may be had tor for milling purposes mr deming is an old time utah miner and discovered the lucky friday while prospecting the old placer diggings on the ground where the had uncovered the vein the lucky friday tunnel has as yet only penetrated the ground a distance of feet from which a has been sunk fifty feet on the vein ve in but with this amount of development the continuity of the vein has been demonstrated and its large proportions proven the vein opened runs about twelve feet in width and the average of assays essays shows the ore to run 23 per ton this gigantic ledge and creditable showing of val ues aes is evidence that the mine is destined to develop into a producer of values equal to its nearby neighbors the golden chariot ida elmore mahogany and other mines there are between bet 2000 and tons of ore on the dump ore and country rock being thrown together and mr deming states that the whole dump will average not less than 7 per ton it is free milling gold the values being very fine which will make it an ideal cyaniding cyan iding proposition the huge vein lies between granlie granite walls which is characteristic of the silver city veins after demonstrating the best method for treating the ore the company proposes to erect a mill and proceed both with the ore extraction and milling of the same samples of the ore are being treated under the direction of mr deming the companas comp anys manager who is also one of the principal owners and a director of the company A mining review representative recently made a visit to this most promising property and was agreeably surprised at the showing made under the judicious direction of mr deming in the way of mine development and also in im the rich and abundant colors panned on every hand from the dirt scraped from the surface shoveled from the creek reec t or picked from the dump at random 0 oa i every hand the splendid showing manifested itself and the company may justly pride itself upon the excellent physical condition of its property its apparent value and promise THE SAN JUAN MINE A to the east of the mckinnon and lying between betwee the poorman and golden chariot veins is a producer of thirty years duration but which has never in all that period been worked to make a mine it is the san juan having three tunnels and feet long respectively ct ively besides several shafts and from which ore to the value of is known to have been produced while leasers leaders have gouged the rich fich values from the veins in amounts which have never been ascertained of all the three Ahree tunnels started neither has been continued to cut the ledge and all the work thereon was consequently wasted the deepest shaft is about feet mr F grete senior and a nephew of silver city are the aaers owners and are now borki working ng it with a small force of 0 men there are four claims in the san juan group which have never neve r been patented JOHN HOGANS LUCKY FIND after forty years of gigantic ore production the great golden cha riot mother vein it tell fell to the happy lot 0 of f john hogan za to discover the extension of the rich ledge on the fourth day of july last year on which he staked his claims and has since demon demonstrated straWd the ore in place by al a number of openings along the ledge malting making his discovery known to his friends john 0 conners and W D evans of the idaho hotel they associated L C beebe with them and located a group of claims covering the vein for a considerable distance it was not to be wondered at that the extension had never before been discovered for it is on the very mizzen top of the windswept wind swept summit of the south end of war eagle mountain and entirely covered with a huge porphyry capping it is to be wondered that mr hogans eagle eye could sight the float and follow its course to the very source of its hidden vaults others before had found float literally alive with specks of the yellow metal just as hogan did but they had never been successful in locating the lead the vein opened to a depth of about thirty feet has been crosscut to demonstrate its width which has been demonstrated to be seven feet and ore from a fifteen foot depth gave a value of the owners have not as yet formed a company but contemplate such proceed ure they are however working the property and erecting a windlass for hoisting the better to enable the conservative prospecting of the ground and will possibly sink a permanent shaft it is named the fourth of july group after the natal day on which hogan made the discovery the property is favorably located for deep tunnel mining after the ground shall have been judiciously exploited ed As before stated this discovery has conclusively clu proven the extension of the great golden chariot vein unless future developments prove some great and unknown fault which is hardly probable LEW SORENSENS NEVER SWEAT on the east side of the famous war eagle mountain extending from the north to the south and covered for a distance of about a mile by the oro fino ida elmore golden chariot minnesota south chariot and mahogany mines is the great golden chariot mother lode on the west side of the mountain extending in a parallel direction is the poorman vein covered for several thousand feet by the poorman property these two veins are known to have produced in the near neighborhood of 30 and have never been prospected beyond the limits mentioned until within the past few months several veins have been uncovered to the south of the properties described on the two ledges alluded to and the character of the ore and the richness thereof as well as the direction that marks the course of same bears witness to the discovery of the extensions of the same fissures chief among the new discoveries may be mentioned the Never sweat owned by lewis sorensen and thomas shaw this property lies on the south extension of the poorman vein on the west side of war eagle mountain and south of whiskey gulch the Never sweat was located three years ago and the claims bonded for when the vein had been opened but two feet deep but owing to a disagreement arising between the contracting parties the bond was not taken up and the property reverted to its owners who have sunk a shaft about feet deep and opened into a four foot body of rich ore on the north end of ther their vein proving its continuity from the shaft the owners are running a crosscut cross cut so as to secure ground the ore is free gold plastered with ruby silver As a better evidence of the quality of the Never sweat ore almost at grassroots grass roots sixty days work produced thirteen tons of ore which milled to the owners the parties having the bond on the property in its inception sunk a shaft seventy five feet deep and took out ore which milled to the ton from another shaft the leaser took ore that milled per ton and all this ore was left on the dump for the owners of the property according to stipulations in case they failed in taking up their bond mr sorensen is one of the pioneer miners of the camp and is also one of the best informed miners of the camp mr shaw who is also a pioneer in the district spends his summers in the camp and his winters with his family in los angeles unlike many mining properties the owners do not overestimate their property while those at all familiar with it give testimony of its promise and value adjoining the Never sweat to the north and between the Never sweat and the poorman unclaimed was a fractional claim which mr sorensen apprised judge leonard of with the advice to locate it the location was duly and legally made and the claim worked at spare times by the judge who has already opened the same vein entirely across his ground which is only feet in length THE RICH ORE OF THE PERHAPS on the northwestern slope of war eagle mountain in close proximity to the famous poorman and joined by the owyhee owahee and and jennings properties lie the perhaps formerly known as the northern light mine the property embraces two ledges both of which have been opened in several places they are the mizpah and northern light veins the mizpah having been developed to a depth of feet by a tunnel which has reached ore running 30 36 to the ton the northern light is an old time mine but is not a big producer however the ore was very rich and in the year 1878 twelve tons from its vein milled per ton while thirty eight tons were taken out by one man in six weeks which yielded the magnificent sum of in the precious metal the property is situated well up on the th slope of the mountain giving a 4 splendid sp lendiS seiw of silver city below it is owned by b the obliging and efficient postmaster ol of sj sil ver city mr M M getchel and mr S T N smith of boise work is now being beine pushed on the tunnel to cut another ledge and to open the mizpah at greater depth THE FORMATION those acquainted with the prevailing prevailing ailin lime of utah camps will find a very happy change in the granite of the silver city district which however merges into a black basaltic lava west of dewey and ex tending on beyond de lamar a few miles while to the east of war eagle mountain the formation again changes to a the whole of the granite formation of war eagle florida and granite mountains is cut by huge dykes of blue rhyolite which in turn have all manner of fissure veins leading out through the granite at cross angles at places the red rhyolite manifests itself in the formation with no material change in its effects on the mineral bearing veins of the district mr waldemar lindgren the government geologist who is accepted authority in this district says the rock is a normal granite rich in al kalies and silica and poor in lime and magnesia and contains dykes of basalt rhyolite diorite porphyry and granite porphyry the diorite porphyry manifesting itself chiefly on war eagle mountain and varying in width from a few feet to several hundred feet in width 0 the professor states in his reports that rhyolite is a lava rich in silica and that the rhyolite of the silver city district occupies an area equal in the aggregate to that of the basalt he also states that one of the largest dykes of rhyolite in the district runs northeast from the tro ok and jennings vein and at places is over forty feet wide A TRAINLOAD TRAIN LOAD OF MACHINERY W H potter of salt lake city has in charge the dismantling of the mammoth hoist and stamp mill of the cumberland plant on war eagle mountain silver city idaho and shipping to the virtue mine of the same company near baker city silver city is essentially a tunnel camp and the gigantic hoist is believed to be a mistake hence the change the machinery coll consists of a hoist capable of 2000 feet depth and the 20 stamp mill the hoist to be erected over the triple com compartment part ment shaft of the virtue mine which is now down 3 00 feet the machinery makes fourteen foursee 11 carloads car loads and its handling is under the supervision of millwright potter directed by manager buckbee NEED OF A CUSTOM MILL in the early days of quartz mining on war eagle mountain mining was principally done by the sinking of shafts but lattery latterly the mode is principally tunnels and tile the camp is an ideal one for tunnel ore extraction the veins of the district average from six inches to several feet general two or three feet and are mined in the usual manner of overhand the ore treatment process is by the pan amalgamation and concentration process but with the adoption of the cyanide treatment by the de lamar company others are giving that chemical method consideration and it is generally given credence and is being tested on other ores of the camp A combination stamp pan amalgamation ga mation and settling tank mill of small capacity is at the service of the public at a rather costly charge but is said to make a closer saving than most of the company mills milis but there is a crying demand for a custom mill to be operated by the combination process at a reasonable charge that will enable the small miner to haul his ore to the mill and receive a return sufficient to warrant the further development and working of his property NOTES ON SILVER CITY IDAHO J A deming of the ohp lucky friday mine is having a mill run of lucky friday ore made in the addle addie mill several other mines are having ore hauled to the addle addie to be milled one of the principal discoveries recently made in the silver city camp was the finding of a thirty foot ledge on the rob roy property by J D doming deming a fet few days ago the ledge carries high values in fine gold J W kidwell of salt lake city vice president of the trade dollar ex gold mining company has been spending the past three weeks in silver viewing the operations of the mine development the citizens of the silver city camp having property interests are all loyal to the alie district and but few hangers on with ao an over punched meal ticket as their assets attempt to ply p ly the too common avocation of knocking wood gathered by from the mountain slopes and packed into anto town on burros is worth 10 per cord in silver city coal is worth 20 per ton and is almost prohibitive because of the excessive freight charges one of the always attractions of any town or city is the local newspapers and in ill this silver city can truly boast of two that are the credit of the town and its citizenship zen lea ship the one is the nugget owned and published by judge john lamb a pioneer in im silver ver city and the other the ava lanche is conducted by mr fritz a new comer to the camp but who is a practical and wideawake wide awake newspaper man on the east cast slope of war eagle mountain moun taia below the golden chariot and ida elmore the cumberland company has developed developed and worked a property to considerable depth having installed a giant steam hoist of the frazer chalmers build and a mammoth air compressor owing to the excessive cost of fuel and the recent advent of electric power into the camp the hoist is being dismantled and shipped to the com banys virtue mi mine nenear near baker city oregon A phenomenon to at once create curiosity and interest is the ice tunnels on the property of the trade dollar ex gold mining company on florida mountain these tunnels were made by miners in search of the ore bodies known to exist there and they intersected a crater formation ly lying 1119 1 exposed to the surface above and through which there is a constant draft of air so cold as to freeze the snow or water that presents itself and the tunnels are so full of ice as to make it almost impossible to enter any great distance the bruton ellis mine is situated well up on the south slope of sugar loaf mountain and was developed by several hundred feet of tunnel work by some italians living in silver city and then bonded for a large sum of money to wm bruton and 0 1 I ellis of nampa and boise the property is located about five or six miles north horth of silver city and is not easy of access the property as developed has demonstrated gigantic ore bodies and several of them one vein of which averages about 25 feet between walls and is a concentrating ore wm beddig from the clausthal Claus thal school of chemistry germany is s now a resident of nampa idaho having gone from denver a year ago he is an experienced mineralogist of note and is in america in search of rare metals he discovered cobalt in lake burt mining district lemhi leahi county |
