Show i FLORIDA MOUNTAIN MINES 1 florida mountain lying directly west of silver city and its twin rival in wealth stands like ligeia a majestic and mighty monitor to guard its treasure vaults containing the massive wealth of the precious metals hidden away by dame nature beneath its weatherworn weather worn and great dome shaped crest a mile and a half above the sea florl florida da mountain is an accredited one mine camp or rather a one company camp owning several mines grouped so as to reach entirely across the entire length of the mountain and opened so as to connect every working property with tunnels the company mentioned is the trade dollar con mining company which is at this time working the ore from its several mines in the blaine and black jack mills the former on the east side of the mountain and the latter on its west slope having acquired the title to the old florida mountain mill at the little town of dewey the trade dollar company is completing its rebuilding and rearrangement arrangement re into a twenty stamp mill with eight van ners twelve amalgamating pans settling tans and agitators the whole to be operated by one 75 horse power motor for the battery of stamps and frue vanner tables and one horse power motor for the pans and settlers the foundation of solid concrete several feet deep is in the course of construction tor for a transformer house at this mill which has been re christened after the name of the company but which is still generally termed the dewey mill the transformer house is for the swan falls electric power system which is the property of the trade dollar bollar company and of which more will be said later the dewey tunnel of the trade dollar company extends through the mountain for a distance of feet cutting the veins at great depth and beneath all the former workings of tho the different mines and con necking them all with the new mill to go into commission within a few days the mine will be supplied with fans air compressors pres sors and other othe r methods and conveniences for modern mining both in the mine and outside and the mine will be wired and lighted throughout the mill shops and offices as well as other buildings of the company will be heated by electric stoves a recent importation by the company which has power to spare and will thus utilize it in the saving of fuel volumes could be written of this company and its gigantic property but since the mining review has previously discussed it at length little will be said here however the ores are treated principally by the concentrating method and the concentrates cen shipped direct to the smelter running into the thousands of dollars per ton the value of the amalgamating ore during the year 1897 averaged 60 per ton of which about 90 per cent was saved the balance wasting down the creek in the early history of the camp not more than 40 per cent of the values were saved by the crude process of extraction but the loss is now reduced to the minimum by the improved and careful methods employed to the west of the trade dollar properties lies a group of properties each having a group of claims separately and which are at this time undergoing a sale to a mr venable of new york who will consolidate them all into one company and proceed to work them systematically the properties mentioned are the tip top owned by banker mccornick of salt lake city the ontario banner and sullivan groups the tip top is an old producer of note and its ore was treated by pan amalgamation at the lincoln mill in silver city for a long time this plant has been out of commission both the tip top and ontario were among the mines of note some years ago while the banner group owned by fred grete crete jr mrs john grete and robert leonard is one of the rich mines 0 of the mountain it has in the neighborhood of feet of work only and it is said of the mine that in forty days two men mined from eight to twelve tons daily which milled them a little less than for their labor the ontario is owned by harry sullivan gullivan and barney madison both of silver city |
