Show I 1 MINING NEAR PROVO the provo correspondent of the daily herald says rich float has been found in the mountains east of provo from the time of the pioneers advent into the valley and mineral bearing rock in place has also been found from time to time the latter in small veins and generally of low grade but for some reason no development work has been done on any of the discoveries till about a year ago since that time a company of provo men jonathan buckley and four of his sons have been at work developing a group of claims owned by them in rock hock canyon about three miles southeast of provo and the work done shows commendable energy and implicit faith on the part pait of the owners for the past eight months two men have worked constantly on the property land and when it is considered that all the 1 parties interested are poor men their efforts forts to develop the country are all the more worthy of credit and it is pleasing to be able to state that there is every indication that their work will bring them I 1 a substantial reward they have located a group of seven claims the monarch on all of which they have droppings crop pings of galena ore their de work consists of Q w tunnels sixty feet in length run on a fissure vein kt at the end of the si sixty 1 aty feet they encountered a contact vei vein n and sunk thirty feet on the intersection of the two veins V they then drifted feet on the contact and are now continuing this drift the vein is well defined with a strong limestone hanI hanging ging wall the foot wall IS iff quartzite and the th eveln vein varies in width from six to eleven feet and even wider kiaer the drift is six feet wide the vein matter is an iron ore in which occurs rich streaks of galena gold bearing quartz and pockets of gray carbonates i the company has now naw about four tons I 1 of ore sa sacked aked at the mouth of the fann tunnel 41 the greater part of the vein matter is thrown over the dump there being noway no way to dispose of it at present as fil Is not rich enough to ship or rather they have no fio way of getting it transported ch cheaply it isa 1 st believed that a great amount if not all of the I 1 ore that is being taken out would pay to ship if it could be loaded into a wagon agan at the bottom of the canyon in order to do this a tramway will have to be constructed the opening of the tunnel is about four hundred feet from the bottom of the canyon on a very steep ledge and about five hundred feet from the top it is the intention when development work shows sufficient ore in sight to justify the outlay to drive a tunnel from the f he bottom of the canyon into the vein this will strike the ledge about 1000 feet below the outcropping cropping out and will give the advantage of loading the ore into in 4 to wagons at atthe the mouth of the tunnel from which it can be shipped and loaded on the cars at a very small expense expensed the herald heral d representative when visiting the m mine ine was shown assays essays from the ore which I 1 is s now nor sacked they show as high as 72 per cent lead gold up to two ounces and silver as high as 49 ounces ou nices I 1 several experienced mining men from colorado and utah camps have visited the mines and all alf agree that the owners have a very valuable property they united in the opinion that if the property were located in an established camp it could now be sold for a large sum the fact that no mine has heretofore biben been developed in the district is not at all discouraging to the buckley who feel assured that in addition to owning valuable property they will have the honor of developing the first mine in the range between american fork and tintic gintic |
