Show IN SOUTHERN OREGON special correspondence grants pass ore march 21 A few weeks ago a discovery of the rare mineral jade the sacred stone of the chinese was made on the oregon california line on althouse creek josephine county oregon and indian creek siskiyou you county california A number of claims covering the discovery were vere taken up by california men who have organized a company for the purpose of developing ve the claims and placing the stone on the market at first it was believed that the stone occurred only in small quantity but harry wood manager of the company that will operate the jade mines recently informed a correspondent of the salt lake mining review that there is a vast ledge of the mineral on their claims on indian creek he brought in a number of samples of the stone with them there are three different shades of the mineral uncovered in the strike these vary from a dark blue and green to an almost transparent white all are of the best quality jade the waters of indian creek are colored blue by flowing over the vast deposit of jade it seems remarkable that the stone should have gone for so long a time undiscovered this is the first time the rare mineral has been found in place on the north american continent implements and wares made of it have been found in new zealand central america the islands of the pacific and even in alaska but the material in all cases came originally from the orient the chinese prize the stone very highly for vases rings bracelets bracelet sand and fine wares the main supply of jade for many years past has come from turkestan Turk estan the southern oregon mines both quartz and placer are enjoying a great activity at the present time in truth all things thing point to a great boom in the mining business of this section from henceforth this is mainly due to the interest that is being taken of late by moneyed men in the quartz properties of the surrounding districts so flattering has been the success of those who have been induced to follow suit and as a result this section of the oregon mineral zone will have a number of new and producing properties by the close of the summer manager sole gole of the oregon califor ilia a gold fields company owners of the eureka mine of soldier creek was recently in grants pass and reports that they are meeting with great success in the development and working of their property they are more than pleased with results and intend to increase the plant and equipment of the eureka this summer it was but a few months ago that the eureka was equipped and d started up it operates a ten stamp mill and has an eight foot ledge of 18 ore kremer palmer have their new mill about ready to begin work at their mine 7 on mount reuben an offer of was recently refused for this property it is one of the best developed mines on mount reuben the I 1 he ledge has a width of from eight to ten feet and carries free gold at the rate of from 8 to 10 a ton the ajax mine on mount reuben is opened by tunnel to a depth of 1200 feet and is another rich property of that district its present mill of five stamps is to be increased to one of a much larger battery the gold bug on mount reuben is an ever busy mine A five stamp mill is operated continually this mine will also add to its plant and equipment this summer the gold bug is owned by senator jones and associates of nevada the american gold fields company of chicago which recently purchased the granite hill mines of the louse creek district are highly pleased with the flattering results being obtained in opening up the veins of their newly acquired properties they are now breaking ground for the erection of a ten stamp mill and will soon have a battery batted of fifteen stamps at work instead of five this company will expend from to in improvements this summer the lime mines out on jenny creek a few miles south of this city which were started up a few months ago more as an experiment than anything else are proving to be an enterprise of importance several hundred barrels of lime have been aan manufactured and put on the market and the product has given entire satisfaction two kilns kalns are in operation and a third is being built these are the only lime mines in the state As there are several hundred acres of limestone beds and marble deposits in that section the manufacture of lime and the quarrying of marble promises to become an industry of magnitude in southern california come familiar terms to the mining public while undoubtedly numerous new propositions will be opened up an important factor in the now prosperity about to come to the silver lead industry of this province is the demand for the zinc ores heretofore thrown on the waste dumps of the slocan mines several shipments of zinc ore from slocan mines have been made to the lanyon smelter at lola iola kas during the winter and several of the mines are now making special arrangements range ments to care for this product the slocan star installing a concentrating plant for that purpose the returns from leading rossland mines for the past few months appear very satisfactory and experiments with a method of concentration are now being conducted with it is said every promise of success with a view to reducing the camps low grade ores of which there are immense deposits developed and undeveloped of too low a grade to ship raw but yet containing values which should permit of their reduction on the ground at a profit given a process by which this may be done and rossland will boube her population within a year the steady upward tendency of copper will probably have but little apparent effect on the operations of the principal B C producers for these people have gone steadily forward even during the period of heaviest depressions in the execution of their schemes of development and enlarged equipment and it is gratifying to note that the chief boundary Boun aary concern concern has during that time advanced to a dividend paying basis it will however in conjunction with the unqualified success of such concerns as the one referred refe ired to induce the opening up of many other deposits known to exist in different parts of the province but notably in the boundary district and on vancouver island where the largest operations are nov being carried on perhaps no camp in the province is receiving more attention both local and foreign at the present time than is the free milling fish creek camp in the lardeau district nor from the magnificent manner in n which the large bodies of free milling ore are showing up under development and the long forward strides made by the camp during the past year is any more worthy of attention it is only a couple of years since the first discovery of free gold ore in this camp yet at this writing one ten stamp mill is in regular commission and two others are now on the ground and will be installed early this spring thousands of feet of development work have been done on the principal properties so that the perk per manenty of the veins and their value with depth is no longer a question the dif ferent companies and individuals interested t in this camp appear to know what they are doing A dispassionate view of the entire tion at the present time seems to justify the assertion that the future of the industry is unclouded by a single discouraging feature it has suffered much in the past both from internal and from external causes the government has been inattentive to its best interests in many ways but the government has finally awakened to its needs and promises much relief in the near future it has been cured by numerous labor upheavals hea vals so numerous and so disastrous that everybody in the least bit interested including the laboring men themselves are casting about for some means to mitigate the evil A permanent arbitration tribunal under government auspices and backed by government authorities is being discussed as a possible solution whatever form it may take that some relief measure will soon be effected is not doubted by those best informed british columbia has suffered much from the depredations of the free booting promoter and the imported incompetent mine manager of whom she has had more than her share but happily the former genus is very heartily extinct public sentiment has killed him and it is becoming pretty generally recognized even by the over seas investor that capable and honest management is not only desirable but necessary if he would get any returns from his investment so it has happened that the mona cled specimen that once flourished here has almost entirely given way to honest and capable men after having totally ignored the product of the kootenay silver lead mines for more than a year it is not only satisfactory but interesting to note the extraordinary efforts now being put forth by the representatives of a number of american smelters shelters sm elters in their endeavors to secure favorable contracts from kootenay producers just why the americans withdrew from the british columbia market a year ago and why they are returning now would make interesting reading but it is more to the point to note that they are likely to stay with us for a considerable time and the salutary effect of their staying on the industry one of our chief difficulties heretofore lay in the fact that we have had no orga organization ni of men identified with the industry adequate to cope with the numerous serious questions that have arisen about two weeks ago a large body of men thoroughly representative of every branch of the industry and its allied interests and representing practically every district in the province met at victoria and formed a provincial provincial I 1 mining association modeled after the california association and having in view the same object viz the betterment of mining conditions without prejudice to any class in view of the excellent work done by the california association and the remarkable unanimity and accord that characterized a the proceedings of the victoria I 1 meeting it is not too much to predict that the provincial mining association will accomplish com much good on behalf of the mining industry in this province the mineral wealth of british columbia is unsurpassed by any similar area in the world and present conditions and future prospects are such that we can invite investigation vesti gation of our matchless resources and the investment of capital in their development with absolute confidence nelson mining division A second gold brick weighing one hundred and fifty ounces has been sent off by the broken hill mining development company and with the first brick weighing eighty four ounces previously sent off represent the result of the first run of the wilcox mill for a period of a little over one month the value of the bullion produced is in the neighborhood of while the boncea made will probably bring the total returns tor for the run to over onelar one carload of concentrates weighing about twenty tons has been shipped the heavy snowfall having prevented further hauling the concentrates cen will have a gross value of between 35 and 40 per ton and there is yet considerable sid erable tonnage left on hand from the run in question the breakage which caused the mill to remain idle for the past few days has now been repaired and everything is again in running order the property is being severely handicapped this winter by the unusually heavy snowfall which has rendered the road almost impassable and thus prevents the hauling of supplies and concentrates returns from the amir mine for the month of january are just to hand during the month tons of ore crushed with 60 stamps running twenty nine days yielded 1711 ounces of bullion gross estimated value pounds there were tons of concentrates shipped to nelson smelter at a gross value of 1804 pounds the cyanide plant treated 2550 tons gross estimated value pounds total working expenses for month pounds expenditures tures on capital account cost of development pounds sundry receipts pounds with net profits of 2380 pounds the prospectus for a new mining company is just issued under the name of the atlin gold mining company with a capitalization of shares of the par value of one dollar the company is formed to take over the atlin nome no 2 and nome fraction mineral claims which are situated on dundee mountain one and one half miles from brair and adjoining the dundee mine the property is owned by patrick daly and john ryan two of pioneers the extensive low grade copper and gold properties that exist in the vicinity of kalloo kamloops Kam loops T will be extensively developed in the near future by a new company that has been formed with a capital of the company which is composed of a number of prominent canadian and amerl ameri can capitalists also contemplates the arec tion of a large smelter and tramway to handle the vast amount of ore which is available in its extensive claims in the vicinity of adams lake and coal hill the python mining syndicate is the name under which the new compary company is now being formed in montreal the mineral claims owned by the company cover a large area in the adams lake district this district has never been very extensively prospected except by the syndicates representatives and it is currently reported that the returns they have received more than justify the outlay that it is about to make lardeau mining division there is now at trout lake about sacks of ethel ore or in the neighborhood of nine tons both the trails to the ethel and lucky boy are in good shape and shipments will be made from time to time all hinted to the ore shed at trout lake there j is s st still 1 11 lying at the ethel about sacks of first class ore work in the big crosscut cross cut at the ethel is making good progress although the rock is more than ordinarily hard the outlook for both the ethel and the lucky boy is very bright at present the former property according to mr stead has more than paid for its development in the amount and value of ore mined the northwestern development syndicate has completed most of the surface work necessary for the winter and has let out twelve men they are working a full force of twenty firemen five men on their goldfinch property driving two crosscut cross cut tunnels with the electric drills and doing other necessary work |
