Show I 1 ahe he header beaver bea ver con consolidated 0 of bea beader beaber der lafe I 1 I 1 I 1 I 1 1 R g R 49 N 0 q NM I 1 the year 1903 promises to be a prosperous one for the mining industry of deaver beaver county this state this is one of the richest mineralized portions of the west and in the early days of mining in utah was productive of thousands upon thousands of tons of high grade ore of the state could hardly be duplicated in any of our western mining districts and when a few individuals with the means wherewith to back their judgment began the exploitation of some of the copper properties of this section to be followed by trainloads train loads has been at a fever heat in this wonderful copper belt beit and following the example of i one or two big corporations others have dropped into line until now scatter scattered ed through the various districts of beaver county innumerable men are at work where heretofore which in value ran the silence of a des IV up into the millions ert ruled supreme e in dollars and cents now the shrill whistle for years its mining of hoisting camps and districts plants are t to 0 be were practically heard in almost every abandoned or gulch ana in localities until the demand cali ties where e the ka 0 for copper became jack rabbit and coyote so urgent that every were once the portion of the lords of creation west was ransacked there may now be for properties productive se n working mines of the red substantial boarding metal then almost 7 ing houses and evidences as if by inspiration of enterprise it was remembered ra it and settled purpose that in beaver county such as mark the establishment in addition to its atu of new J deposits of gold silver camps confidently and lead there believed to be richly were mammoth deposits mineral beaming beading of such is the condition copper ore which in their im in beaver men sity were althe beaver consolidated hoisting works dounty today and most beyond human calculation these deposits to be sure were principally low in grade but in such marvelous quantity that it has been demonstrated that when treated on a large scale they could be handled successfully and at a handsome profit with the resurrection of memories connected with the mineral wealth of beaver county and when it became an established fact that the copper deposits of this portion of copper ore to salt lake reduction works the ore averaging over 40 per cent in the red metal then and not until then did the mining fraternity at large begin to realize that in beaver county were to be found opportunities for mining operation and investment that could not be duplicated or eclipsed throughout the length and breadth of this great intermountain region As a result mining during the past eighteen months 15 chere formerly there were out one or more big mining companies in operation there are now half a dozen or more with a score of smaller corporations po rations industriously at work in the effort to pierce at depth the ore bodies so plainly indicated at the surface by mammoth droppings crop pings and well defined ledges in the ranks of the former may well be classed the beaver consolidated the baby of the flock in point af age but long past the infant stage in point of improvements made and development already accomplished shed a condition that speaks well for the energy of its management and the financial condition of the companas comp anys treasury the beaver consolidated mining company was incorporated on the of last july since then it has equipped its group of ten claims with one of the finest hoisting plants to be found in the southern country with one exception and already has its double compartment shaft down to a depth of feet and with machine drills in operation is going on down at the rate of five and six feet a day with nothing short of an accident to check this rapid progress until the level is reached As a matter of fact the progress made by the company within so brief a period has been a record breaker and it cannot be long at this rate before the beaver con will be and similar to that which is characteristic of the south end of beaver lake district being a granite or rhyolite rather than a true granite the exceptions being that some veins appear between two walls of granite the veins are true fissures running east and west and north and south the dip of the east and west veins are nearly vertical and the north and south veins from 45 to 50 degrees to the east development has not progressed to the point where I 1 it is possible to judge intelligently which are the main veins of this portion of the district the east and west and north and south ledges being about equal in size in indications of permanency and continuity and in metallic values however there are those who give preference to the east and west veins and who are inclined to the belief that with more extensive development these will prove to be the strongest and 01 i 4 4 01 Y Z al ve V view of the hoisting works from the east referred to as often as is the cactus the 0 K and the splendid properties owned by dr P A H franklin Pr anklin the beaver con holdings holding s consist of ten claims in one body the group joining the ben harrison p mine lne on the west and the 0 K on the south the consolidated claims cover one or 01 the richest mineralized portions of the district the surface ground of which is seamed with a perfect net work of veins all of which carry most encouraging values in the red metal ae the presumption being that with depth these ledges will make into great bodies of copper ore much of which will be of high grade while the bulk will yield dig returns when treated on the ground either by concentration or by reduction by fire the formation Formati orf the formation of the beaver con group is in n keeping lice with the general surroundings most productive of the series of mineral bearing zones by which t is section is so abundantly blessed mine equipment the machinery equipment of the beaver consolidated was furnished in the main by the salt lake branch of te lie mine smelter ter supply company and consists of the following one horsepower atlas boiler together with a horsepower cochrane heater one davis hoist one leyner air compressor and two ingersoll sergeant machine drills to which equipment will scon be added a light 16 candlepower dynamo and blower electrically driven in addition the company has put in a mile and a half of water pipe line which is used conjointly by the beaver be aver consolidated and tare ben harrison this line extends from solus on the oregon ore on short line rail road to the divide between the beaver con and ben harrison mines the pumping plant at solus which forces the water to the upper tank consists of a Ki knowles lowles pump and a 25 horsepower econ amic boiler the capacity of the plant being gallons gallong daily there are two water tanks of a capacity of gallons each one of which is at solus the other being located at the divide as previously stated thus giving pressure at the works of both mines and as the buildings have been piped all the conveniences of a city in this respect are enjoyed the buildings at the beaver con as described by J H lightner builder and millwright are as follows boiler house feet shaft house and engine room feet blacksmith shop feet the shaft house in connection with the engine house is not completed as yet but will be under cover as so soon on as the new 40 foot gallows frame is in place which will be the case before this issue of the mining review is out when finished the building will be 41 feet in height at the cone and all the structures are covered with corrugated iron thus making them practically fireproof the boiler is set in solid granite masonry while the rest of the machinery is set in concrete foundations with a filling of sulphur everything about the plant is of the most substantial t and solid nature with every convenience and appliance imaginable for effective and economic operation many devices being su supplied p plied by engineer seely for the saving of water and the utilization of waste team development when the beaver con began operations in n july but little development work had really been previously accomplished in a number of cf places on the surface the veins had been uncovered by pot holes by trenching drenching tren ching and short drifts and this surface scratching had disclosed the existence of mineral bearing ore in encouraging value and quantity As a matter of fact in one of theses these pot holes some of the richest copper ore ever found in the district had been dis closed in addition to this two incline shafts narrow winding holes had been sunk to a depth of feet and these ha had encountered very fine deposits in the re red tv metal but it was worse than useless t tc utilize these old workings in the efte extensively siv and systematic development and eap exp exploit 1 a ag tion of the property and as a consequence manager inaugurated the presen present system which has resulted in the ansta in stalla tion of such up to date and substantial hols hoist ing works and machinery the double compartment shaft is x feet in the clear each compartment bein feet in the clear claar this is a splendid splenda shaft and is timbered and lagged in a tho fugn and workmanlike manner the shaf t at this writing is down a depth of abo aboud feet in country rock the inte lw to sink to the without stopping cutting a station on he on the way down at a depth of 65 feet a change in the formation indicated the near p presence cresence of a blind north and south vein but no attention was paid to this as every energy is being p put ut forth in the effort to attain depth at the drifts will be started both east and west with the expectation that the first of the series of north and south veins will be c cut ut within a distance of between 50 or 60 feet from the bottom of the shaft and at a depth of from to feet on its dip while to the east the first north and south vein will probably be disclosed within a distance of feet within a radius of feet from the bottom of the shaft east I 1 it t is anticipated that two more north and south ledges will be uncovered to the west of the shaft the crosscut cross cut will open up three more north and south veins making four altogether to the north there are four veins that are known to exist in this direction from the mine workings before reaching the south line of the 0 K group one of these a very strong one was accidentally discovered while making excavation for the boiler and engine house while the other three have been opened on the surface and traced through the group to the south of the shaft east and west veins are known to exist but their number extent and value have not yet been determined the temporary gallows frame is being replaced as rapidly as possible by a 40 foot head frame which is being constructed with inch timbers 40 feet in length the timbers are oregon pine and when the hoist Is completed it will be one of the largest and best ever built in southern utah and the entire works will make an imposing sight and will be a landmark for many miles around it can be seen to the best advantage from solus on the 0 S L road the affairs of the company are in experienced perien ced hands J J of salt lake city who also guides the destinies of the stockton and silver coin mines in stockton haunts and of the ben harrison of beaver lake is general manager harvey J is general superintendent T W galigher is mine foreman and J E seely is chief engineer the editor of the mining review visited the beaver consolidated soon scon after the first and was more than pleased with the manner in which the affairs of the company are being handled and with the substantial nature of the improvements made and also with the manner with which mine development is being pushed every condition being such that if success smiles upon the efforts of the company and ore in paying quantity and quality is encountered no delay will be entailed in at once placing the mine upon a producing and paying basis with such splendid surface showings and with such heavy ore bodies developed in adjoining property there is reason to believe that in the end with persistent persi tent and dystel matic exploration the beaver con will drori o all and more than is hoped for it by its biet Isan sanguine guing friends and supporters |
