Show s sass J jp s the elks mineral exhibit of the stock exchange itt OVA the salt lake stock and mining exchange at the elks carnival held in this city last week made a most creditable mineral exhibit its booth in the midway on third south street between main and west temple being commodious and nicely decorated while the display of ores and minerals was exceedingly attractive representing as it did collections from almost every mining district in the state the exhibit being under the supervision of W L goodsell who has had bad this superb collection under his charge for the past four or five years As asa a matter of fact this handsome and instructive exhibit so full and complete was one of the distinctive features of the carnival display and thousands stopped before the exchange portals to examine and inspect each individual sample and specimen this enterprise on the part of the exchange management do stock exchange and the brokers already alluded to on the occasion of the elks carnival is both praiseworthy and commendable and that it will do much towards burthe furthering ring the material interests of the board and of each individual member as it is now a well lecog nihed fact that the stock exchange is now one of the leading financial institutions of this city and that in point of business done is a wonderful help to the mining industry of the state and that as a medium for the sale of J mining securities it stands without a peer west of the mississippi river it being safe to say that it is the most influential and the greatest strictly mining board on the american continent and not because of the number of shares daily transferred in its pit but because of their selling value and the gilt edged class of securities dealt in in the general i average value being in the near neighbor could be had at from to today they are worth all the way from to 1000 each and it would be difficult now even at these figures to secure half a dozen seats and yet the membership numbers seventy at this writing just before the review goes to press it would be impossible almost to give the transactions of the exchange in detail since it first opened its doors for business but we can point with pride to the fact that there has been a steady increase in business from year to year until now it amounts to over a million shares a month and of a valuation of over a million dollars the trading for the past four months three of which included the hot term being as follows shares value may june july august I 1 total rn W 1 r 7 V mw lit t A M I 1 7 0 L ali C C f M 0 ilk STOCK EXCHANGE EXHIBIT AND BOOTHS OF ing much towards advertising to the world the magnificent and practically unrivaled mineral resources of our fair state another feature of the exhibit was the enterprise of ten of our leading brokers and stock dealers who with the push and vigor characteristic of the members members of the board erected ten booths five on each side of the mineral exhibit which were handsomely decorated and embellished and in these booths during the continuance of the carnival these ten brokers were present in person or had their representatives there to answer all questions relative to stocks mines and mining on the east of the exchange exhibit were located the booths of F D higginbotham jr A T kerr E C coffin son and R L colburn while to the west were the headquarters of R J evans hudson sons co W H dark clark J and barnett and langley a halftone half tone illustration of mining exchange row being given herewith and we believe that our readers will join with us in the assertion that the enterprise displayed b by the hood of 1 a share the mining exchange since its organization about six years ago has seen many tribulations bind and vicissitudes col J W donnellan was its first president and lie he served the board most ably and well during the first two years of its existence it moved its call room three ov or four times and it was often the case that at the daily call not a single share of stock changed hands four years ago however the exchange began to take a solid foothold with investors and stock buyers the sales began to increase and in due time excitement cit ement ran high in fact there has hardly been a month durino during the last three years but that an increase in business in the pit has not been recorded and not only were more shares daily transferred but higher priced stocks were dealt in with the establishment of the board memberships were placed at 25 each with increased business and the deep interest being taken in the exchange these figures steadily advanced when the exchange was incorporated thrpo three years ago memberships A prominent feature of the dealings on the salt lake board is the intrinsic value of the stocks traded in many of the companies being heavy dividend payers while others own properties of such pronounced merit that the investor takes but little chances in dealing in in them many meritorious prospects are also listed quite a number of which jumping from five to ten cents a share during the past few months are now ready sellers at 2 3 4 and even 5 a share and stocks which six years ago ago were sluggish at 12 and 15 a share are now in active and feverish demand at 40 and 80 a share in fact those dealing in utah mining shares during the past few years have made fortunes in in many instances and a gradual increase in stock values has been steadily recorded until now trading is not confined to salt lake and utah people alone but there is an active demand for our best securities in this line from almost every commercial center in the east while thousands of eastern capitalists have pot only invested in utah mining shares but they have put millions into various mining enterprises in the different camps throughout the state and this latter condition has been very largely brought about because of the stability of the stock exchange the undeniable value of the stocks dealt in on its floor as well as the fact that the exchange has advertised to the world in a manner that counts that the mines of utah are unexcelled and that they are well up to the front in the way of regular and heavy dividend payers the mining exchange at the present time is in a most flourishing condition for more than three years 1 an account of the pressure of business the board has not taken its customary vacation and it is hardly likely that it will see an adjournment of business even for a week for many years to come the affairs of the exchange are being well and satisfactorily handled by the following board of officers hon D H peery president E G wooley jr vice president josiah barnett treasurer F D higginbotham secretary J A shorten assistant secretary while ira R jones is the efficient caller in addition herman bamberger is the chairman of the listing committee R L colburn is chairman of the arbitration committee and W H child is ia chairman of the
