Show f the carbonate gem of morgan moran 9 county J has its leadville famed C COLORADO the world over as the great carbonate camp no other section in the west has ever equaled the splendid record made by leadville in the production of lead carbonates although in a number of localities this magnificent camp has many rivals in this line utah not to be behind the times in this respect can boast of a number of camps productive of this class and character of ore none of which are ar more prominent pro m and give promise of greater things in the future than an almost unknown section in morgan county W we e s say a y unknown advisedly advis advisedly edl y because of the fact that this district has never received t the h e attention it so justly merits and particularly so by our home people it being a fact that capitalists of butte and the east know more about the splendid possibilities of this richly mineralized section than is the case with the rank and file of the mining operators of this city and ogden and yet this comparatively new lead producing camp is but a few hours ride from this city and offers almost every convenience veni ence and facility v for successful and profitable mining operations no question existing as to presence of ore in this locality in large and paying quantities the first discovery to be recorded on bursts Duis ts peak mountain argenta district morgan county was the carbonate hill mine the prospect was first located by a couple of farmers who found large bodies of high grade lead carbonates and galena at the grassroots grass roots quiren a controlling interest in the stock of the company organized by mr van patten this gentleman still retaining a large interest in the same when this transaction was recorded mr van patten purchased the carbonate gem group joining the w 01 W ak AN I 1 THE CARBONATE GEM MINE being ignorant about mining affairs and also afraid of losing this valuable ground they associated with them in this enterprise A van patten of ogden a mining man and operator of experience and ability who soon placed the property on a prod producing acing and paying basis bagis the showing being so favorable that hardly less than a year ago ago a syndicate of butte st louis and omaha capitalists ac 11 1 l Carbonate Hill property on the th south and covering an extension of the carbonate hill vein or contact a large portion of the carbonate gem holdings being covered by a heavy growth of fine timber in order to prove pr ove the merits of his new acquisitions mr van patten at once organized the carbonate carbona te gem mining company and is now engage din the systematic and extensive dev development elopement elop ment of this prospective bonanza the idea of the management being to acquire depth in the exploitation of the mine rather than to e expend dime aime and money in surface gop hering theares ent workings Avor kings assuring a depth of more than feet below the apex of the ledge ledcke and already the mammoth mineralized zone has been encountered and large bodies of in milling illing ore interspersed with rock of shipping values a are re now being blocked out in the drift from the in regular consignments consign 0 ments of first class ore to the smelters shelters sm elters the carbonate gem group of seven claims for which patent has been applied for is located twenty four miles from ogden through the famous weber canyon and eight miles northeast of peterson a station on the union pacific railroad this being the point from which all supplies are shipped to the mines and from which the carbonate gem and the carbonate hill consign their ore shipments to the metal markets of the west the ore being hauled from the mines to peterson and loaded on the cars at 2 per ton the formation of bursts peak mountain is said to be almost identical with that of L leadville eada ille being inc a mammoth contact vein between blue lime and white porphyry the mountain side being fairly sprinkled with lead carbonate float and carbonate q quartz u a r t z the vein is all of feet in width with a strike to the north east and southwest the dip being to the east the mineralized zone being traceable on the surface for a distance of fully four miles every indication going to show that the deposits are permanent and that they go to the deep on the west across the gulch the ak 4 A 4 CARBONATE GEM MINE AIR compressor AND RECEIVER formation is granite which t probably will be the of the vein at greater depth although the carbonate gem is a comparatively ively new enterprise still a large amount of work has already been done in its development and exploration and most of this work has been done in a manner tending to develop the mine at depth so that the lower tunnel upon which all work has been done since the property passed into the hands of the present management may well be accounted as permanent workings in the upper workings feet of work was done in tunnels and extends upwards for a distance of feet varying in size in its upward I 1 course cours e until further progress is checked by large masses of carbonate and galena ore of excellent grade the walls being spott spotted edwith with the sanle same mineral with occasional patches of chlorides the occurrence of the cave is accounted as foretelling great things for the future of th the mine as surely indicating the existence of nf j 4 X 9 47 IV V 1 THE CARBONATE GEM MINE 1 CA CARD ONATE HILL IN THE DISTANCE before the mine changed hands and in these shallow surface openings fine bodies of pay ore were exposed a shipment being made from this portion of the property during L its early history which sampled 60 per cent lead 15 ounces silver and 5 in gold to the ton in the from the upper tunnel level at the time work was discontinued at this point a splendid body of carbonate ore was showing which was fourteen feet in width between walls these workings have since caved in but the ledge will undoubtedly be again encountered countered en in the lower workings at a depth d of feet in the lower tunnel workings in gs feet of exploration has been done the tunnel is a fine piece of workmanship as in fact are all of the new workings the lower crosscut cross cut tunnel is in a distance of feet at feet from its mouth mineral w was as encountered and at this point a drift was run west on the vein feet breaking into a large body of lead carbonates and galena A big station was cut in the face of this drift and a sunk on the vein which exposed ex posed a ten foot body of good concentrating or milling ore at a depth of sixty five feet in the a crosscut cross cut has been driven a distance of forty feet for the purpose of tapping a fine chute of ore exposed in a crosscut cross cut drift driven easterly from the station in cutting 0 o out this station the men broke into an immense imme nse cave to the south this cave is mammoth in its proportions being large enough at the disi covery point to take in a small house while it large lare bodies of pay ore in its near vicinity another important il Port feature connected with the discovery of the cave is that through it flows a stream of good water sufficient in volume v 0 aume for mining milling a and n d culinary purposes an item itella that means in much uch for the company and a great saving from a money point of view to say nothing of the con the water is is diverted through the drift into the main tunnel and from there to the outside where it can be utilized for any purpose desired in the way of equipment the carbonate gem is well supplied for all present needs in the wa way y of machinery the plant embraces a thirty horse power boiler a six drill air compressor burleigh drills and a cameron camereri Came rori sinking pump with a capacity of gallons per minute the equipment having been supplied by the mining machinery dep department artmont of the v v w CARBONATE GEM EM MINE DRILL IN FACE OF DRIFT FROM M salt lake hardware company the property boasts of a commodious boarding house I a substantial bunk house capable of accomma dating forty men boiler and com compressor prossor room mom blacksmith shop stable powder magazine and storehouse the buildings 11 all being well and strongly built while everything is conveniently arranged so that mining operations can be carried on successfully either in summer or winter the character of carbonate gem ores is a lead carbonate crystallized lead and galena with an occasional occurrence of chlorides the gangue being an iron and lead spar making a product that is in excellent demand at the smelters shelters sm elters generally bringing a premium because of the excess of iron on an average the first class or shipping ore shows metallic values of 50 per cent lead 15 ounces silver and from to 5 in gold to the ton while the second class or milling ores of which many thousands of tons are exposed in the mine workings will carry values of 15 per percent cent lead 5 to 6 ounces silver and 1 to 2 in gold to the ton and with such splendid milling facilities as are offered at the mine this latter product can be handled successfully and profitably when the company decides upon the erection of a plant the property of the company is quite heavily timbered well watered and quite accessible ces sible the surface showings are all that could be desired while development so far has given promise of most flattering results with more extended development at least this is the way the enterprise im impressed presse d the editor of this paper who made a visit to this promising ground a few days ago the carbonate gem company is capitalized at shares of a par value of 1 each A van patten is president joseph myers is vice president S H hendershot is treasurer A J weber is secretary these with irvin R van patten who is assistant manager A A wenger Wen gerand and thomas champneys comprising the directorate ogden men of good standing in mining and commercial circles wm win gravit an experienced miner is foreman of the mine I 1 the carbonate gem adjoins the carbonate hill mine on the south and on the extension of the same vein the carbonate hill which was the first mine discovered in this portion of the district has made ore shipments to the value of about and large bodies of ore are blocked out in the workings of the property it being estimated that all of in first class and in second class or milling ore is exposed ready for extraction for the market or the mill the carbonate hill is working a force of ten or twelve men while the carbonate gem is now working two shifts of six men each the lower tunnel of the carbonate gem will cut the carbonate hill ledge at a depth of feet below the workings of the first named property and it is confidently believed that the carbonate gem with more extensive development will equal its near neighbor as a producing and paying mine mine among the heavy stockholders of the carbonate hill are
