Show copper camp of contact nevada stepping into the spotlight new deals and new mining activities are now be being ing recorded things are shaping up for a lively years operations in the copper camp of contact nevada the recently completed ninety mile branch line odthe of the oregon short line railroad stretching from rogerson idaho to wells nevada and which conn connects acts up with contact approximately midway along the route is scheduled to go into regular schedule commission on the of next month A special writer who has just recently given the camp of contact the once over among other things has the following to say fabulous wealth will be taken from this district wealth that will make the riches of midas a mere picayune in in comparison the aim orthis of this recital is to place before the people as briefly as possible the wonderful opportunities this district offers to investors nowhere in the confines of this great country or for that matter outside of them does there exist such an investment opportunity for capital both large and small as exists for the investor in effle ane contact district location of the camp and district the contact district is located inthe in the northeastern part of elko county nevada and the town of contact at present principal settlement is near the center of the district about eighteen miles south of the idaho state line and something like forty miles west of the utah boundary line it is sixty four miles south of twin falls and thirty five miles south of rogerson it is fifty miles from contact to wells the southern terminus of the new railroad and eighty miles easterly of elko the county seat the district lies on the headwaters of the salmon river which takes its rise in in the mountainous belt that divides the great basin from the snake river plain and flows in a northeasterly direct direction ion and joins the snake river at lewis ferry about fifty miles north of the idaho state line and twenty miles below shoshone falls the district lies in the nevada plateau or broadly characterized in an elongated qua versal produced by the upcoming up doming of paleozoic Pale sedimentary rocks by an underlying intrusive mass district was organized in 1909 the district was organized in 1909 and extends from the eighth standard parallel twenty five miles south of contact range corners 62 63 67 and 68 forty two miles northward to the idaho state line having a width of thirty miles the principal landmarks are ellen D elevation china elevation and middle stack mountains elevation situated situate ld about eight miles apart in the western southern and northeastern parts of the district respectively apices apice s of an equilateral triangle important secondary points are blanchard mountain toward the southeast and toano boano john peak on the east cast this particular peak occupies such a commanding position as to be easily discernable discernible discern able from rog kog erson and other points fifty miles distant it is hardly necessary in this article to go into details but itis necessary for the of the geological formations reader to understand something of the tremendous possibilities bili ties of the district to produce gold silver and copper primarily it is a copper camp as practically every form of ot the but do not overlook copper ore has been discovered fact contain gold and silver silver that everywhere the deposits in sufficient quantities to pay the cost of mining leaving the copper a clear asset it would be too great task to mention all the numerous leous properties that show promise of becoming producers but 11 in fairness I 1 must mention a few of the properties that have enough development done to practically assure them of be ing ing future producers the list is not complete but will serve the purpose of illustrating the bigness of the district some of the mines and prospects it was my privilege to look at some ore brought in by blame blaine hanks from one of his properties so rich in gold as to be discernable discernible discern able to the naked eye this ore would run in the neighborhood of from to per ton mr hanks has shipped some very high grade ore from his properties the delano mine has shipped a great quantity of high grade ore in the neighborhood of a quarter million of dollars worth the brooklyn mine the helen D and palo alto are owned by the gray mining company on the helen D a great deal of work has been done and it is safe to assume it will eventually become one of the big producers of the district on the palo alto it is the intention of the company to run a tunnel five miles long seven by nine feet at a cost of something like which when completed open under gravity the ore bodies to a depth of 2000 feet work on this tunnel has already been started the bluebird the antelope loleta and lewis group queen of the hills the bonanza the ivy wilson group are owned by the riverside mining company the copper shield mine is destined to become another of 4 the he 1 great producers and has shipped a quantity of high grade ore the florence the salt lake group now known as the may S and the yellow girl mine have each shipped several cars of high grade the hickey lead silver property also lies on the west side these are but a few of the properties on the west side this side alone being about three to four times larger than butte mont on the east cast side we have such locally well known properties as the boston ora high ore camp bird and zetta blanchard which have shipped ore oconnell group johnson group toano boano john china etc a visit to any of these properties will convince the most skeptical copper shield in bi big deal john lingelbach and frank springer of denver depre benting the united states copper corporation which ha has s taken over the copper shield mines at contact under a deal made last october through the agency of claar beals company have arrived in contact to commence work on the development of the property which is now under way assays essays taken from outcropping cropping out ores on the copper shield property show as high as 50 per cent in copper and high hiah values in silver and gold it h has as been es estimated that the ore carries enough values in silver and gold to pay the cost of mining the new company is driving a 1500 foot tunnel to open up the ore bearing dikes at depth experienced mining men have spent years of their 0 lives waiting and dreaming of the things that are now becoming a reality in contact among them the well known mining engineer N H shields who in 1904 selected the claims now known as the copper shield group and who spent the balance ho with wonderful determination to these of his life holding iding properties knowl knowing i ng that some day they would become a mine how unfortunate that mr shie shields ids could not great friends of mr shields his dream a reality have lived to se see e will watch with great interest the operations ions of the U S copper corporation the opening and the development of the great ore dikes of the shield locations seattle bellevue is active the seattle bellevue company is in about 1500 feet with the tunnel they started last summer driving to the foot mark and encountering very rich ore bodies A fine modern home has just been completed near the mouth of this tunnel for mr dunkle the superintendent and general mana manager er and many other buildings have been erected and consi considerable erable new machinery installed including an ore crushing plant and it is expected that a mill and concentrator will be installed in the near future much ore from the delano there has been about fifteen carloads of ore shipped from contact during the past few months of which several cars belonged belong cd to southard gonzales who arc leasing on the delano property mr gonzales states that the ore shipped averaged from 12 to 18 per cent in copper with good values in silver and gold and that their shipments had cleared them about one thousand dollars per car they now have about eight c cars a rs of high grade ore in the bins ready for shipment which they are holding until after february 15 expecting to get better freight rates when the railroad company takes over the actual operation of the road |
