Show JOE FARREN AN OLD TIMER PASSES AWAY IN SALT LAKE CITY joseph farren fan en 98 years of age pioneer mining man of the west died on the instant at the home of mrs M E henshaw east broadway despite his advanced years mr farren enjoyed robust health until recently and was interested in his business his wife died in salt lake in 1895 and for many years he lived at mrs henshawe Hen shaws home mr farren leaves no relatives so far as is known he was born in new york december 21 1826 he received his early education there when a mere boy he arrived at plumus county cal in placer mining days when the placers began running low in 1858 he went to the fraser river in british columbia when news came of a big discovery there he gained little but experience by this trip returning to his former location in 1859 mr farren proceeded to virginia city but soon moved to the walker river country fifty miles southeast of carson and soon afterwards ter wards to carson mr farren assisted in developing the mineral hill district and was one of the chief owners of the eureka consolidated opened a mine and built a smelter at bullion he was at one time a partner of uncle billy lent in a chase for diamonds in new mexico and arizona and was one of the first miners on the owyhee owahee and participated in the opening of the camp of tuscarora corora opened the copper mines at tacoma on the southern pacific virtually mined in all the districts in utah and then became superintendent of the mines of the glasgow western company at golconda and cherry creek nev and beaver county utah he was a trusted adherent of what is known as the arc royal old band in california and nevada fair head lent Gash weiler hearst raymond Asli ashburner burner and the fannins Jan he was taken critically ill in 1909 at east fly ely nev but improved following an operation and was brought to his home at salt lake where he recovered he returned to his work as superintendent of the glasgow western company in nevada until a cessation of operations and advancing age necessitated his retirement from active duties several years ago funeral services were held and the remains were buried in mt olivet cemetery sunday S last |
