Show arsenic production breaks all records the production and sale of arsenic in the united states in 1924 broke all previous records nine companies that produced white arsenic in the united states in 1924 reported to the geological survey their sales which amounted to short tons the sales of the crude and refined product represented 71 per cent of the total white arsenic produced and the products were sold at the average price of 9 cents a pound during 1924 about short tons of white arsenic was imported into the united states as shown by the actual figures for 10 months and an estimate for the remainder of the year in january short tons of white arsenic was imported in february tons and in the next four months the imports increased to more than 1000 tons a month in august and september the imports decreased to and tons respectively but in october they increased to tons from january to october inclusive the imports amounted to tons valued at or cents a pound mexico contributes large imports most of the white arsenic imported was produced in mexico but considerable quantities in the order named originated in germany japan belgium england canada china dominican republic and australia of metallic or elemental arsenic produced in belgium japan and germany pounds valued at or cents a pound was imported during the first ten months of the year the shipments of sulphide of arsenic probably largely with some orpiment amounted to pounds valued at or 7 cents a pound most of the sulphide was shipped from germany but some was shipped from canada belgium and england the sheep dip imported from england amounted to pounds valued at or 89 cents a pound and the imports i of patis paris green and london purple of which there was pounds valued at averaged cents a pound arsenic acid of which pounds was imported was valued at cents a pound no imports of calcium arsenate were re reported p arted 1 the total white arsenic boug bought for consumption in m 1924 from domestic and foreign sources w was as about short hort tons valued at 9 cents a pound manufacturers of insecticides purchased the largest quantities of white ar lenic nic and glass makers bought heavily during the last halt half of the year newly constructed plants near points 0 ot f distribution trib ution produced a larger quantity than formerly ot of sod aum ium mm ai senite the weed killing solution made from crude white ite arsenic sources of domestic arsenic twelve arsenic plants were in operation in 1924 two i of t them recovered white arsenic from ores and used it for lor making calcium arsenate and one plant treated oxidized L arsenical ore from which calcium arsenate was made direl dir aly about 65 per cent of the ane total refined and crude arsenic was obtained from ore roasted at 7 arsenic plants plant primarily for its content of arsenic 24 per cent was a by product at copper smelters shelters sm elters and a little more than 9 per cent was a byproduct by product at lead reduction works at midvale and murray utah arsenic plants operated separately from the main smelting smelling sm elting works produced nearly half the total output the plant at midvale produced refined and crude white arsenic which was used largely in making a weed killer part of this product is made at midvale and part at the plant of the united states lead refinery at east chicago ind the plant at murray reduced arsenical ore to the crude product which was shipped to globe colo for at the copper plant at tecoma wash refined white arsenic was made utah is largest producer during 1924 more than tons of arsenical ore containing conta containing inin 9 an average of about 20 per cent of arsenic was mined at gold hill in clifton mining district utah this output of ore was the largest made in the united states and most of it was stockpiled stock piled for direct treatment at arsenic plants in the vicinity of salt lake city some of this ore was sent to the copper smelter at tacoma wash considerable arsenical from the old smelter dump at eureka nev was shipped to midvale utah during the first part of the year and part of it was stock piled at palisade nev for future distribution at the toulon plant all the ore from the irish rose mine near battle mountain nev and considerable custom ore was reduced to white arsenic but the plant was closed in june to await an increase in the price of arsenic elsewhere in nevada arsenical ores were mined in the manhattan antelope and silver star districts at holbrook near blair junction carson 4 city and fallon the ores from these districts were treated at the arsenic plant at martinez california which also received arsenical ore from colorado new mexico and arizona as well ivell as from mines in california the white arsenic recovered from the ore roasted was made into weed killer sodium which was sold to the railroad companies on the pacific coast at pittsburg C calif alif calcium arsenate was made from white arsenic recovered from 0 ores res purchased in nevada and california from the arsenic plant at jardine near gar gardiner d mont considerable refined and crude white arsenic was sold and very little was left in stock the plant is exceptionally well equip equipped pedy and when occasion demands can increase its output considerably during the year new arsenic arseni c kitchens were completed at keystone S dak and a little white arsenic was produced prices dropped fifty per cent the price of white arsenic in 1924 as quoted in j journals j our published in new york city ranged from 13 12 1 2 cents a pound in january to 11 34 3 4 cents at the end pi ot march and was about 8 14 1 4 cents during june and july the price dropped gradually until october when 6 12 1 2 was asked in november there was a bid and 7 cents was slight demand with offerings at 63 4 cents a pound delivered the price of imported arsenic varied with japanese in material at 6 14 1 4 cents a pound on spot in november and european at 6 12 1 2 cents a pound producers can meet all demands general interest in in arseni arsenic c was evident near the end of 1924 but the buyers who were looking for lower prices had been influenced by reports that large surplus stocks being carried in the united states that there are were considerable stocks of arsenic is true but they constitute only a sma small 11 fraction of a good seasons demand considerable ore conta containing inin g arsenic is stockpiled stock piled at several points and can be held better in the crude ore than as th the e manufactured product most of the producers of white arsenic are duce heavily when th there theres ereis is a demand in a position to pro produce |
