railroad was out of commission and teaming was a practical impossibility on account of the deep snows and continuous stormy weather it had been hoped by the management that shipments of ore might begin in time to clear the slate of every cut outstanding standing obligation and show a cash surplus in the annual report but the fates decreed otherwise as shipping was not inaugurated until the day property to the dividing line between the latter and the cardiff mining companas Comp anys possessions on the north and northwest and the kennebec on the north and northeast since the beginning of this year 1920 underground connections have been made with the foot level near the northwestern boundaries of co lumbus rexall ground and with the car diffy foot level through kennebec workings extended into columbus rexall ground not far from the northeast boundaries of the later property and about seventy feet vertically below the rexall tunnel level connections also have been made with tho the frederick tunnel luring during the past winter so that the mines ventilation is excellent and four different means of entry and exit have been provided against accident in any of the mines thus connected 27 to ore bins and covered passage ways for men between the mine dump and the office boarding house and other buildings the heavy snow fall in the camp has necessitated this work in order that operations might be continued through the winter months and while the substantial character of the buildings and covered passage ways has called for heavy expenditures manager M R evans thorough knowledge of camp conditions warned him that to slight expense in the undertaking would spell disaster and probably loss of life when the elements should begin their rule in the winter time the columbus rexall secures its electric power and light as well as its compressed air supply for the operation of hoists drills etc in the mine from the large power plants operated as subsidiaries of the wa satch mines Coni company pany and the servi ceis adequate for all existing needs following the organization of the co lumbus recall consolidated company a great deal of preliminary s work wor k had to io be done underground and much equipment in the way of mine cars rai rails Hs drilling machinery air hose etc had to be provided and it was not until the early spring of 1917 that a good start was made in july of that year the first important strike was made in the northern portion of the old columbus extension ground about one mile from the portal of the rowland howland tunnel and approximately 1100 feet vertically beneath the surface all development in co lumbus rex gr ground aund since then is calculated from that point plan of mine improvement it is generally known by all who have kept in touch with operations at the property that an inclined raise of approximately feet was driven from and above the original deposit of copper silver ore in a northwesterly direction this work attaining an elevation of about feet above the tunnel level here several faces of silver lead ore have be been n developed without determining the limits of the deposit and from which shipping ore of good grade can be mined as conditions warrant and apor eunity affords it was from the upper level of this raise that conne connections chions were made with the level on the dividing line between the properties however the main work in hand during the past several months has been to extend the main tunnel level northerly from the copper silver ore body about feet through the rexall no I 1 claim to the point where the incline was started down to connect with the drift that was run from f rom the car diffy foot level through and beyond the kennebec boundary into the northeastern portion of the rexall no I 1 claim this incline has been sunk on a pitch of one foot to each two and one half feet thus making connection in approximately feet and about seventy feet vertically beneath the columbus rexall tunnel level no opportunity has yet been had to prospect this new low level in the property as work has been practically suspended there sinde since connections were made in fact before much can be done at that point a hoist must be provided to take the place of the little donkey machine used in sinking much ore is exposed commercial ore is exposed in practically all directions in the northern end of the tunnel n ea workings with no less than six different headings to mine from from this point to the top of the raise above the copper silver ore shoots the distance is approximately approximate lv feet and a 4 drift from the north northern ern and of the tunnel workings is now be being 1 g sent out southwesterly to explore this intervening ground at this writing the drift has been advanced over feet in ore all the w way ay and nd the potential possibilities of ibis virgin undeveloped portion of the com banys domain from the tunnel level to the surface is rated as being very e ry great stub drifts or headings have b een started in other directions and all told there are exposed at present about a dozen different ore faces what results of development are going to be on the level opened ope by the incline connecting with the is yet to be determined of course but du during ring the sinking of the incline as many as twenty eight mine cars of ore per shift were were lifted out 41 P 14 1 4 0 I 1 K T 16 11 21 dumps and ore bins tunnel entrance and a glimpse of the companas Comp anys property which begins 1000 feet back of tunnel portal and extends over the high ridge to the cardiff property and sent to the bins at the portal of the tunnel in running the drift southwesterly from the end of the tunnel along the beddings a number of will be cut so that they will be opened up exploration and prospecting it has been estimated that if development was to be subordinated to production and with the addition of a few more cars and another tram horse tons of ore per day with a gross value around 40 per ton could ea easily S ily be mined in other words the columbus Rexall mine already is sufficiently developed to produce worth of ore daily while rough calculations put the tonnage practically practical y in n sight worth or more development at interesting stage development now has reached a stage wc we 1 I e it A s bleto more rapidly determine e the th e mines possibilities it is T already established tha that the 1 t ore making z zone ene is not 1 less than feet long and it i salso established that ore is making verti vertically verticals call Y between t w een levels for more than feet and on oil the dip of the beddings for more ore than feet while the main fissure in the property has be been en traced out ont for 2500 feet what will be developed above the horizon represented by the workings at the top of the foot raise and the surface of course remains to be determined but it is evident that there are many years of operation ahead of the columbus rex without counting a foot below the present attained depths some of the ground below the tunnel level is known to be wet for water channels were tapped in efforts to sink in ore at at no great distance north of the copper silver but these can wait the work of sinking to the kennebec drift has demonstrated that no water exists in that portion of the property at least for some distance below the tunnel level and with ground even only seventy feet thick be below lur the tunnel if the ore proves as persistent as now seems possible a tremendous tonnage can be mined along that horizon there is na no though of and it is not the purpose of the management to subordinate development to the extraction of ore the mine now is in shape to produce a good tonnage na e without doing so and it is the set pur pir pose of manager evans to keep development just as far ahead of production as possible so that once dividends ar are e established on a permanent basis there will be no occasion to skip all of the ore which has come from the mine for many months past has been taken out in doing develop development me allt work alone this ore has come from drifts crosscuts cross cuts raises tunnel extensions etc and not from more than a dozen of these openings and ore facings are no available for mining operations future prospects are bright
