| Show NEW RATES ON POTASH A washington dispatch says that utah wyoming colorado and california potash will hereafter be able to reach eastern and southern markets in competition with potash from europe under special potash commodity rates which were approved recently by the railroad administration and soon will go into effect the new rates are greatly lower than the old class rates under which most of this potash has had to move in the past and are believed by the railroad administration to be such as to encourage the development of the potash industry in the group of western states where potash is found heretofore development and expansion of the potash industry has been practically impossible because old rates were prohibitive those familiar with the matter say in a few instances local communities had commodity rates on potash but they were limited in scope and did not include the entire field rates comprehensive the new rates are comprehensive and cover the entire potash producing section of the west as it exists today in establishing the new rates the railroad administration has slightly reduced the old commodity rates from california and scaled down rates from utah wyoming and colorado in proportion as the length of haul has diminished this readjustment of rates is directly the result of the recent efforts in washington of H W manager of the traffic service bureau of utah who devoted several days to consideration of this problem with edward chambers director of the division of traffic and other officers of the railroad administration no definite date can be set when the new commodity rates will go into effect they were transmitted to western regional headquarters at chicago and by that office will be sent to the various railroads which are affected the individual roads then will publish the new tariffs and five days after filing the potash tariffs with the interstate commerce commission the rates become operative era tive apply to carload lots the new rates apply to carload lots of 0 a minimum weight of pounds the potash to be shipped either in bags or bulk carbonate chlorate chloride nitrate sulphate or sulphide of potash and alkali salts which contain not more than 30 per cent actual potash may be shipped under a low grade rate on the same products containing more than 30 per cent actual potash but not more than 75 per cent the high grade rate is applicable to missouri river points from california producing points the low grade rate is fifty two and one half cents a hundred pounds and sixty five cents a hundred pounds on high grade utah rates quoted from utah points to missouri river points the rate on low grade potash is forty cents a hundred and on high grade fifty cents a hundred from green river wyoming to missouri river points the rate is thirty five cents a hundred on low grade and forty five cents on high grade from colorado points to missouri river points the rate is thirty two and one half cents a hundredweight on the low grade potash and forty two cents for the high grade to chicago and mississippi river points including st louis memphis and new orleans the rate on shipments from california points is sixty two and one half cents a hundred on low grade and seventy five cents on high grade from utah points to the same locality the rate is fifty cents for the low grade and sixty cents for the high grade from green river from green river wyoming to the same territory the rate per hundred pounds is forty five cents on low grade and fifty five cents on the high grade from colorado points the rate is forty two and one half cents for low grade and 4 t fifty two cents for high grade to the same locality to points east of chicago memphis and new orleans from california the rates are seventy five cents on low grade and ninety cents a hundredweight on high grade on shipments from utah destined to the same territory the proportional rate to st louis is thirty seven and one halt half cents for the low grade potash and forty five cents for the high grade from green river wyoming to st louis a proportional rate of thirty five cents for the low grade and forty cents for the high grade has been established from colorado points to st louis there is a proportional rate of thirty cents for low grade and thirty seven cents for high grade I 1 |
