Show THE COAL STRIKE true to schedule the great coal strike of the vast coal producing regions of the united states went into effect on november 1 and approximately miners answered the call to lay down their picks and shovels practically tying up one of the nations greatest industries the united mine workers of america declared in their meeting in cleveland during september that the wartime war time wage agreement ended the first of this month and that they would refuse to operate the mines if their new demands were not met these demands included a five day working week a six hour day and a wage increase of 60 per cent the miners of utah were not called out but owing to the misunderstanding resultant from whether they would be or not many failed to report for work on the first day although since that time conditions locally have materially improved leaving utah as the only state where anything like full production is being maintained after the failure of the washington conference president wilson attempted to prevent the calamity and proposed to the operators and the union officials that pending arbitration of their differences the men remain at work stating that the calling of a strike under the circumstances would be considered illegal but even this had bad no effect again we are confronted with the seeming indifference of union officials to the expressed desires of the country as exemplified by its chief executive he is exceeding his authority was the manner in which the miners executive replied to the proposals of the nations head the strike will not prove a popular one and owing to the extreme demands of the men thinking people will soon become tired of the deplorable conditions resultant from labors enforced demands at a time when every effort should be made to bring the country back to a normal way of living this result will not be accomplished in the manner desired by the striking miners note after making up the forms for this issue the coal strike has been called off |
