Show plant and practice of the tintic gintic milling company BY WILL C HIGGINS A great deal of interest is being taken in the plant and practice of the tintic gintic milling company the company began ore treatment a few months ago after considerable time had been devoted to the installation stal lation and equipment of its plant which is located near silver city tintic gintic mining district utah and very satisfactory results have been recorded in milling practice which involves a number of new features in metal extraction the plant of the company is on the tin tic branch of the D R G the salt lake route and the eureka hill railroads the mill being designed for custom work while the company is purchasing its ores from a number of tintic gintic district mines with which it has contracts at the present time the main tonnage treated comes from the iron blossom and dragon mines these ores are sampled at the silver city plant of the utah ore sampling company and the low grades go to the mill while direct smelting smelling sm elting ores go to the salt lake valley smelters shelters sm elters chloride roasting and leaching the plant of the tintic gintic milling company employs a chloride roasting and leaching process which is the outgrowth of extended experimental work on these ores the ore treated is highly carrying values in copper silver and gold only these metals are paid for while a penalty is charged on lime and a bonus allowed on sulphur the following flow sheet gives an idea of the method of treatment milling practice the ore after being sampled and weighed by the utah ore sampling company is delivered to the hopper bottom receiving bins from these steel apron feeders deliver the ore to the coarse crushing plant consisting of a gyratory crusher an and three sets of rolls an elevator and conveyor deliver the crushed ore to storage bins storage bins are provided for salt coal dust oxidized ores and sulphide ores from the bottom of the storage bins belt feeders deliver the proper proportion of the various reagents along with the ore to the fine file crushing plant where the material is crushed to about one eighth inch maximum the present feed is about as follows oxidized ores GOO pounds per min sulphide ore pounds per min 12 per cent sulphur coal dust 12 pounds per min salt 80 pounds per min this mixture after crushing is delivered to a shuttle conveyor which distributes to the bins above the holt dern roasters asters ro the holt dern roasters boasters Ro asters the holt dern ro asters are designed to roast ane ore by the combustion of the fuel in the charge and their operation is both cheap and efficient the of the metals is more perfectly do done ne in alib holt dern roaster than in the old type of roaster at adji a fraction of the cost and without any appreciable volatilization or dust loss there are eleven of these furnaces installed at the companas comp anys milling plant having a daily capacity each of thirty tons from roaster to leaching vats from the bins below the roasters asters ro the calcines are delivered by a peck bucket carrier to the leaching vats the leaching tanks are twenty feet in diameter by twelve feet deep holding about tons of calcines to a charge the leaching operation is simple the leaching solution is made from the salt dissolved from the roasted ore to which about seven pounds per ton of acid is added A part of this solid is scrubbed from the roaster smoke before it is discharged into the air the first solution through the tank is called the silver solution and passes to the scrap iron boxes where liere the silver gold and copper is deposited on scrap iron the rema remaining inin solution is returned through the tanks until it is built up to precipitating strength streng Lh after about ninety six hours leaching the tank is washed and its content discharged onto conveyor belts which convey the tailings to the dump i 1 oj reduction plant and tailings dump of tintic gintic milling company photo by will C higgins the precipitates the product from the iron boxes in the form of precipitates is washed into a cleanup tank dried and ship shipped ped to the smelter at the present time the plant of the company is being enlarged to handle tons per day this work of enlargement is being handled so as to interfere as little as possible with the regular operation of the plant low grade ores profitably handled the plant has demonstrated its ability to profitably handle the low grade copper gold and silver ores of tintic gintic district As far as known the holt de bern rn is the only process that will make a commercial saving on low grade ores of this character the officers of the company are jesse knight president geo H dern vice pres ident and general manager W lester mangum secretary and treasurer and theo P holt superintendent the company is shipping at the rate of a carload of precipitates monthly valued at from to a carload and it expects to make three consignments consign ments monthly of the cars of this value as soon as the new equipment now in course of installation is all in and in commission FLOW SHEET C LL hop pe M re C a 9 7 13 S et e t Y a
