Show resumption on of activities in mines of dugway district BY AUSTIN K Y Tl ERNAN following the recent shipment of a ton lot of high grade lead silver ore from three properties and the solving of the transportation problem dugway mining district utah is attracting a great deal of attention and with the proper amount of development during the next nine or twelve months should become one of the largest and most regular ore production sections in the state the district embraces the northerly end of 0 the dugway range of mountains which have a trend of northwest and southeast they rise about 2500 feet above the desert valleys on either side and are generally rugged situated in the south central part of tooele thoele county about fifty two miles northwesterly from faust station on the line of the san pedro los angeles and salt lake railroad about forty seven miles southerly ensinger Ens ineer er salt lake city atah from clive station on the line of the western pacific railroad and about thirty five miles southeasterly from goodwin the proposed terminus at gold hill of the deep creek railroad although this camp has been known for a number of years the distance from the railroad has heretofore been the great drawback to the active development of mining properties but with the installation of motor N 6 looking down cannons canyon across the desert to fish springs range dump of dugway trucks and tractors this difficulty will be materially overcome geological conditions the geological conditions in this section are ideal there are large and highly mineralized erali zed fissures in the quartzite contact deposits between the lime and quartzite and replacement deposits in the limestone this range is composed of the sedimentary series and ascending in a geological order are the quart which form the western flank of this range and dipping slightly to the north and northeast next comes a series of lime stones with argillaceous limes and then a series of beds including the coarse crystalline gray lime stones characteristic act of the tintic gintic district and which forms the eastern flank of the range these quart and lime stones are all cut by a number of nearly parallel porphyry dikes A petition has been started to request the U S geological survey to cause a re 0 6 T 4 acx mining co rattler hattler hill in the distance con survey to be made of this section at an early date A little early history during the ophir excitement in 1868 and 1869 george and charles dark clark left virginia city nevada bound for this new silver camp and while traveling overland stopped on their way and prospected a part of the dugway range and located the first claim called the silver king in 1870 0 H rol lins and partners staked a few claims and a little later mills henry deterly and others spent quite a little time prospecting this field and locating some of the ground now owned by the yellow jacket four Illet metals als and red metal in 1891 sam gilson discovered the buckhorn claim one car of the rich gold silver ore from here was sold for 30 A total of worth of ore was produced from this property at this time there was considerable activity and up to 1903 a good tonnage of high grade ore was shipped but from that time up to the spring of this year very little work has been done except the usual amount of annual assessment work snyder takes over the laurel the first property to start taking out cut ore this year was the laurel operated by B L cutler D H schenck and 0 A swan this group of claims embraces both sides and the apex of one of the spurs of the westerly flank of the range tunnels have been driven in from both sides the ore extracted is from tile the south side at an elevation of feet below the lake bonneville shore line which is over 1000 feet above the present level of great salt lake the vein is from twenty to seventy feet wide at the surface the formation is ia quartzite e the settlement for a rece recent nt car of ore on the market is as follows silver ounces lead per cent copper 3 per cent A net smelter price of per ton was paid for the ore in the seventies and eighties mills shipped three cars of ore from the laurel and george blair shipped one car from the bryan claim it is understood that willard F snyder and others have taken ovar over the swan and schenck interests and propose a steady monthly production from now on work on the bullion hill in may alay J P nelson and associates commenced work on the bullion hill and in a very short time were breaking excellent ore this property consists of nine patented claims the main vein on which has been opened up by a tunnel the strike of rich ore was made in this tunnel the vein having a strike of south 51 deg west and the ore varying in width from six inches to two feet the country rock is quartzite cut by a porphyry dike that extends through the dugway copper companas Comp anys property the bullion hill claim and the cache fifty feet in a westerly direction from the main ore bearing vein is another parallel vein and a third parallel vein lies feet further to the north there is also a cross vein that intersects the main ore hearing bearing vein vei n and in all probability the other two veins in the first part of november settlement was made on a car of ore as follows silver 94 ounces lead per cent copper or a net smelter price of per ton was made in 1903 two lots were shipped to the smelter the first carried silver ounces lead per cent and copper 75 cent the second lot carried silver ounces lead per cent and copper 75 per cent the mines development company has taken a lease on this property and expects to ship about two cars per month the golconda group the golconda group was also operated by nelson and associates this ground has been opened up by a shaft feet deep on the vein and about feet of drifting about twenty feet west from the bottom of the shaft high grade lead ore is exposed the varies two and three feet in width A recent shipment was made from this shoot and also partly from another shoot exposed on the surface about feet westerly from the collar of tile the main shaft with smelter returns as follows silver 40 ounces lead per cent copper 2 per cent or a net smelter settlement of per ton when this property was once owned by jack delaney it is claimed he made a shipment that returned 81 per cent lead and 40 ounces silver the mines development company has a lease on this property and it is anticipated that a large tonnage will be developed and shipped the lincoln highway the lincoln highway group which at one time was operated under the name of the st george copper co is now under control of willard Wi illard F snyder and others the indications here are such that point to the development of an immense contact deposit and an energetic campaign has been outlined for this winter and spring with this end in view the rattler group the rattler group owned principally by the cannon brothers is situated in the westerly section of the district the formation of which is quartzite cut by a porphyry dike A large amount of work has been performed on these claims and a number of years ago four cars of high grade lead silver copper ore were sent to the salt lake smelters shelters sm elters it is proposed by the present owners to immediately commence work by crosscutting and drifting from the lower workings to connect with the main ledge and as this distance does not exceed sixty to seventy feet it ie only a question of a few weeks before a steady tonnage is being hauled to the railroad the cannon brothers also control under the name of the dugway mining company the black maria farla croesus and juno groups the latter and the black maria alaria have sent in about three cars of high grade ore the four metals the four metals ground part 0 of which in the early days was owned by mills and known as the silver king I ing claim shipped about tons of ore that would average 80 ounces in silver and 50 per cent lead later this property was taken over by george L moats and a shaft sunk on the vein to a depth of 0 f feet with several hundred feet of drifts A car of ore was sent out in 1903 that netted better than 35 per ton at the prices prevailing at that time in the following year while making an examination of the lower workings and in descending from the foot level to the th foot level the ladders gave way and moats fell to the bottom of the shaft and passed away before assistance reached him since that time nothing has beer been done with the property except the patenting of the claims by one of the controlling interests the country rock here is limestone but with another to feet more in depth the contact with the quartzite should be reached and an immense deposit encountered there is a small tonnage on the dumps some samples of which carried silver 23 ounces gold oz lead per cent and zinc per cent also silver 39 ounces gold 03 ounces lead per cent and zinc per cent the red metal group the red metal group owned by H H green and others joins the four metals and covers a section of the apex of the lime quartzite contact with numerous mineralized erali zed veins of which that exposed on the red 11 metal etal claim is the most prominent and a large gossan cropping out on the eureka claim A small amount of development work will put this group in the shipping class A continuation of the lime quartzite contact is found in the ensign group controlled by J P nelson and on which are also found many rich veins of silver lead ore the piedmont company the piedmont mining company the principal stockholders of which are dan M egan john Q ryan and william G romney holds twelve claims development is being carried on with a force of men sinking on the piedmont vein with very gratifying results the shaft is now down a distance of feet and has disclosed some nice ore A recent discovery on this property about feet westerly from the piedmont shaft I 1 has las disclosed five feet of copper silver ore this ore is now being followed down on its dip to the northwest and every indication is that as depth is attained the will increase both in size and value samples taken from this incline about twenty feet below the surface on the ath dinst gave returns as follows sacked ore on dump 1525 per cent copper 03 ounces silver and trace of gold three and one half feet of iron copper gangue per P cen cent t copper 05 per cent lead 07 ounces silver trace of gold one foot copper streak on per cent copper 03 ounces silver and trace of gold the high grade streak was not sampled as it was represented inthe in the sacked ore the piedmont should become a good shipper by spring will work the penant f the penant mining alining company owned prin cipal cicali by G lavignino Lavign mo and tile the lundell lundeen br brothers booths consists of eight patented mining 1 I claims the Lun deens are expected to leave in the next few days to resumed resume operations 4 the dugway copper 14 the dugway copper mining company 41 gowned owned mostly by peterson brothers of salt lit lake city has seven claims on this ground li va a shaft has been sunk to a depth of feet two to three hundred feet of drifts I 1 idith with a good exposure of copper ore ia ore and with cheap transportation the ore could be made to pay large returns some of these claims were located in the seventies and later a car was shipped to the smelter and some ore down to the bullion ville smelter which is a distance of about four miles and near the mouth of bullion canyon part of this ore was run through the smelter with good results as can be de will be found here the leona now the dell bell at one time sent in fifteen sacks of ore that brought dryburg and associates recently left for bullion to commence work on the golden emma mining companas Comp anys ground and in connection with dobbs will also begin operations erat ions on the atlantic fandango and gamma groups 0 YV i bancroft and johnson has every indication di dl cation of being one of the biggest producers of the district of low grade silver lead to ter mined by the slag analysis horn silver and silver bell the horn silver and silver bell groups are now being operated under tile the management of soren nelson and high grade sil ver lead ore is being extracted these claims are in what isi is known as the buckhorn limestone and it js is more anan probable that some veran large and rich deposits other wealth producers among other properties that have shipped from this district are tile the sunday of tile the pyrite group one car of silver lead ore the hidden treasure one car of per cent copper ore kelly for the delcher belcher mining all 11 1 ng company one car of 19 per cent copper ore w with anderson one car of 28 per cent copper ore it is reported that tile the lessees lessels of the Buckli buckhorn orn group will very shortly resume active operations with the hope of discovering another similar to the one taken out iby by sam gilson transportation facilities improved As heretofore mentioned the distance of this camp from the railroad has always been the great drawback but now me question of transportation has been finally settled especially since ralph W brown recently took a contract for hauling tons of ore from tile the bullion hill laurel and golconda properties at 15 per ton and demonstrated that with two motor trucks and tile the roads in fair condition and a constant tonnage of twenty to thirty tons per week furnished the cost per ton with a good margin of profit would not exceed and now that the railroad from wendover to gold hill is an assured fact the question of shipping to goodwin a distance of about thirty five miles depends on whether the lincoln highway commission constructs the contemplated concrete road across the soft alkali desert west or granite mountain and if this is done the cost per ton will be again reduced but not to any great extent as the grade from the desert up to the terminus of the deep creek railroad is such that it may be objectionable for heavy loading the dugway problem the only real solution for cheap transportation por tation is for the operators of this section as well as the owners and those that are prospectively interested to make every effort to develop the wonderful ore showing of dugway and increase the tonnage of ore to forty to fifty tons per week then caterpillar tractors can be installed hauling the ore on a level grade nearly due north to clive station on the line of the western pacific railroad a distance of about forty seven miles at an approximate cost of 6 per ton these tractors will haul thirty to forty tons at a time and while not making the speed of the motor trucks will compensate in the magnitude of the load As soon as these tractors are installed the large bodies of low grade ore will be shipped and with increased interest and a greater development that will eventually bring the tonnage in sight to such an extent that it will warrant the building of a branch line into this district |
