Show utah men i in n idaho mining broj project act TIMES HAILEY IDAHO the first tangible evidence of the great change to come about in the halley hailey section is the taking hold of the north star property by the syndicate of which john P boyle is the manager associated with him is frank mcgurrin of the salt lake security trust company who will be the president of the new organization manager gemmell of the utah copper company the ivers brothers controlling owners of the lost packer of custer county ex united states senator kearns and david keith of the silver king coalition company these capitalists of salt lake and park city utah are worth scores of millions of dollars and are at last convinced that the north star proposition is well worthy of their attention they have been very cautious F for or nearly two years one or another of their experts visited and sampled the mine the times has told about their visits as they came but it could not say just what was going on without violating confidence and possibly unintentionally obstructing ting the protracted negotiations lot after lot of samples was taken and tested but because of the complexity of the ore which is said to be most difficult and unpromising to work of any other in the united states the values could not be extracted unless at a cost absolutely prohibitive A cheap process found apt a new process is found it is known as the electrolytic process it can reduce ore either raw as extracted from the mine or concentrated as it comes from the mill and it extracts the values so cheaply that that the very lowest grade of ores can by this process be made to yield a profit the north star ores have been tested by this process pro cess and although other tests must be made before a decision is reached as to its applicability those tests will be final that the gentlemen referred to are convinced that it is the process which they have been looking for is evident as they are going ahead with their arrangements to avail themselves of it they have begun work at the north star and are now looking for a location for their smelter electric furnaces that require H P in looking about for power they examined the electric power and light plants at halley hailey and bellevue and found them so absolutely inadequate that they were compelled to look elsewhere both the bellevue plant of the rockwell white company and the halley hailey plant owned by the goodings and john R hart have applications for more power than they can supply even at the high rates that they are by special favor of the public utilities commission allowed to charge there they remained but one concern that could supply electric power upon an adequate scale that is or was the beaver river power company getting its power from the malad river which is only another name for wood river it has plenty of energy to spare it offered the north star people to supply it all the power needed if jt it would use it at shoshone to which its wires are already bringing many thousand horsepower for which it can find no market the railroad people fully alive to the importance of the project offered to donate the north star crowd group syndicate or company it is not yet named the railroad machine 1 shop at shoshone with ample yard room for side tracks dumps works etc thus practically offering to donate as good as the north star people thereupon sent their surveyors to shoshone who rep reported the site desirable available and prefers preferable ble to others offered the east fork preferable but manager boyle is a practical man who is not easily carried off his feet as it were so in considering the matter he foresaw many disadvantages in the proposed site at shoshone for ono one thing it would separate the mining and reduction plants of the company necessitate two headquarters or sets of officials and offices give rise to much inconvenience it would require qu re the hauling from the mine to the furnaces of fully 1600 pounds of waste for every pounds of metal in a to ton of ore I hence the final location of the furnaces is under consideration beaver river must come here if the north star people decide to build their furnace or furnaces they will 01 first build one unit of tons daily capacity and add other units as needed on the fast ea F fork ork of wood river or at halley hailey or between betwee ll hailey and bellevue at the foot of look L out mountain the power must be baroug brought d b them and there is only one concern in the e world word that can supply it that con r ern rn is the beaver river power company low ow merged in the idaho oregon power and ight company this last named company is the most powerful gerful most gigantic producer of electra sl I 1 energy in the world it has issued bonds p to and a like value of stock total of sixty millions of dollars and back T that company are said to be the billions j not ot millions of the standard oil com ny and of J P morgan co L local benefit incalculable t the moment the north star company 10 ams gins operations in earnest there will be jj great rush of experts and mine buyers lere re and every known deposit of low grade br re e will be exploited we will see the sailey iley gold belt thebie th the eBig big and little smokey the beaver soldier deer and willow creeks vienna boulder rooks mountain muldoon bellevue volcano and resurrection and every other locality where low grade ore bodies were discovered in the early days again alive with prospectors miners teamsters and the many other classes of skilled and unskilled workers found in every mining community all property values to increase wherever located the furnaces will double the value of all ranch properties within a radius of twenty miles and directly or indirectly add to the value of all tangible property in the county within two years after the putting into commission for permanent operation of an ton daily capacity electric furnace fully should be added to the taxable value of the real and personal property in B aine county |
