Show j it low ilow grade crade C A rade or high grade camp cam P DT ITT rt T BY WILLIAM P DEWOLF oatman arizona november 15 any statement oft repeated carries with it a cumulative weight that tends to in the public mind the conviction that it is twenty carat truth the gospel of all the politicians who have harangued the public gar ear from the stone age to the present has its genesis in the of mankind as a whole to accept as bona fide skookum their reiterated platitudes this disposition on the part of the average person to let another direct the current of his 1 opinions is as apparent in ni mining ining circles as in other walks of life and yet when each new chapter of revelations has been arlt ten into the mineralogical text books we note a reversal of form that sets at naught theories which had hitherto been accepted as facts old bob womack cowpuncher and sporadic prospector wrote a new chapter on mining in letters of gold with the point of a pick that he drove inquiringly into a ledge outcrop on the broken box ranch cripple creek with its millions and its multiplicity of mines took shape in womacks hole in the ground thereby confounding com founding the theorists and lending emphasis to the truism guthat 5 that gold is where you find it for cripple creek be it known was turned down s by a number of noted mineralogists sev eral of whom are yet unconvinced of its merit many of us can look back along the vista of time to the boisterous early days lof of cripple creek and recall the strong adverse opinion expressed anent the continuation of values at depth Tono troubles las ss the public of nye county nevada a almost to a man turned down its thumbs in ridicule of jim butler the belmont Belmon fc rancher who located the mizpah group of claims and gave to the world the richest silver gold camp of the twentieth century later that same public acclaimed butler as the father ot tonopah To and yet with perverse persistence held to the belief that pay values did not prevail beyond the belmont fault ault subsequently it was proven that pay values did and do and will prevail to great depth beyond that barrier those of us who followed the trail blaz r id by harry stimler the indian into the goldfield country can remember the days iche hen i only a little coterie of stouthearted stout hearted optimists could visualize its future great ills 7 ss behind the cloud of adverse public pinion we can recall the time when the led top the jumbo the florence the combination oin the january and even the reat eat mohawk were skeptically spoken of r were damned by the faintest of praise L e can remember during a later period pen he it was said that the shale was absolutely barren of values and yet today the veins in the shale at goldfield are supplying the wherewithal to pay generous dividends how about oatman many people hold the opinion that oatman is a low grade camp this may or may not be the case time and development will prove or disapprove the theory during the period of watchful waiting however it is not amis to give the data now available on this interesting subject the once over the facts and figures I 1 have gathered during a seven months sojourn here do not corroborate the contention that oatman is a low grade camp that is they do not convey such a conviction to my mind it is my purpose to submit them herewith unadorned and unbiased ore having an average gold content of 40 per ton is being mined in the tom reed workings at a depth of 1075 feet and from a short distance below surface to that depth ore has been opened at times that averaged upward of in gold to the ton the average value of all the ore extracted from the tom read mine during the 1914 15 fiscal year was 21 per ton low grade ore as commercially recognized is ore having a precious metal value of 10 per ton or less generally less the average value or the tom reed ore is therefore more than double that commercially known as low grade values widely distributed an especially noteworthy feature is the broad area here over which ore carrying a gold content much higher than low grade is distributed on the foot level of the moss mine for instance 60 ore is being mined the moss is located six miles north of the tom reed and between the two are located a number of properties where the average grade of the ore is considerably higher than low grade the woss mine is being operated under bond by the united states smelting smelling Sm elting refining mining company owner of the famous gold road mine the latter was purchased from a french syndicate for it has produced ore having a value as high as per ton and is shipping monthly to mint worth of gold bullion adjoining the gold road on the south is the estate of the gold road bonanza mining company where 30 ore was recently encountered at a depth of fifty feet halt half a mile north and east of the gold cold road mine is the property of the gold ore Ai mining lining company where a six foot face of ore is exposed in the west drift on the foot level four miles to the north and west of the gold ore estate and about two miles from the moss mine is located the mossback mine owned iby by burlock garrison and associates of san diego burlock has mined and shipped a considerable tonnage of ore A deal for the transfer of the property is now being negotiated at a price running into six figures nearby the moss and mossback mines are the extensive gaddis and perry mineral holdings and the bofty claims of the united NV estern company the ledges on both of these have given high values at surface and nominal depth kenneth donnellan one of the pioneer mining men oz 0 goldfield has with san francisco associates taken over the gaddis and perry ground south end gold values five miles south of the tom reed and ten tell miles south of the moss and mossback mines the black range and the nellie companies are developing extensive acre ages ore carrying gold in the free and ana sam plying upward of per ton has been found at surface and shallow depth on both of these properties D C wright president of the black range company and formerly a leaser in the cripple creek district expended of hiss his own money in the development of the black range acreage before asking for outside financial aid he recently refused an offer of for his holdings in the black range company two feet of ore sampling per ton were recently opened at a depth of hf fifty ty feet in the green quartz group the latter is adjacent to the black range and the nellie on the south and west and was formerly owned by louis armil for a number of years armil worked the ore with financial success by means of a rude ar astra long and mclver mciver the men who developed the united eastern into a bonanza now control the property high values have also been obtained on the black hawk group formerly the murdock and porter group curry alexander lazy boy esperanza and other properties located in the extreme south end of the camp other north end values the hardy mine located north of and adjoining the neglected group of the tom reed company and the property of the jer ome oatman mining company was taken over a few months ago by fred W crosley J 0 A carper and other former mine operators of the cripple creek district the buckeye vein on the hardy is one of the richest in the camp in former years this vein produced a considerable tonnage of high grade ore that was freighted by team to needles and from there transported by rail to san bernardino and reduced at a generous profit A lateral is being driven to tap the buckeye vein at depth the jer orne ome oatman company is driving its shaft to depth with the object of opening the extension of the ha hardy idy vein system the now new macli machinery hiery is in commission and Is greatly facilitating mining operations 0 pe rations the hardy and the jerome oatman are located about four miles north of the tom reed and about seven miles north of the black range and the nellie within a mile of the jerome oatman and the hardy properties are located the times group the gray eagle group and the holdings of the ivanhoe consolidated mines company the times was recently taken over by W F gray formerly a successful leaser at goldfield associated with him in the enterprise are B J berceron and other ohio business men free gold features the ore on the times group and at a depth of fifty feet samples better than 50 per ton the gray eagle group formerly owned by thornton dunbar and associates has been taken over by the gold stone mining company W B gordon formerly a successful mine operator at goldfield and manhattan nevada is the moving spirit in tile the enterprise by check assay it has been demonstrated that three feet of manganese ore on the gold stone property has an average value of 33 per ton at other points bannings pann ings of the ore indicate a value of at least 50 per ton A camp has been established and development work started at a depth of feet the ivanhoe is showing forty feet of vein material carrying good values the shaft is to be lowered to a depth of feet where the will again be crosscut from shallow workings on tile the ivanhoe ore has been mined and saved for shipment that has an average value of 45 per ton Oat mans heart of gold Oat mans heart of gold as the 3 mile radius from the business center of the camp is often called carries precious metal values which would be considered high grade in any camp the united eastern mine for instance has approximately worth of ore in sight on and above the foot level values range as high as 1200 gold per ton and hold strong at 40 per ton across a breadth of thirty feet the northwest drift on the foot level has sampled an average of per ton for the last fifty feet at a depth of eighty three feet the shaft on the estate of the oatman mining milling company entered 85 ore the shaft is nearing the foot point where a level will be established and a crosscut be sent out to tap the encountered above at a depth of feet in the united western workings vein material having a value of 35 per ton was found this ore is 19 to be crosscut at a depth of feet A station is now being cut at that level the current week the united western paid off all indebtedness against its horseshoe reed group of claims and was given a deed thereto by william berg and sam frolley the former owners the leland vivian mine has produced a large tonnage of high grade ore as likewise the orion pioneer and ruth mines the of 0 oat boundaries latter lies bayon beyond d the will in due course mans heart of gold but the precious metal again add materially to having a value of output of the cam camp P ore surface from c a to per ton was sloped depth of feet on the orion estate during the period when it was called the gold dust the property is being aggressively developed under conditions that insure the early opening of valuable ore from surface to a depth of sixty feet on the pioneer by allen alien G property recently purchased burris and associates ore was mined and shipped to sampler in kingman some years ago that gave returns of per ton the lilah vein on the estate of the arizona tom reed company adjoining the pioneer mine samples as high as 50 per ton at surface and nominal depth additional good values assays essays as high as 60 gold per ton have been obtained on the ledge outcrop on the property of the white chief company adjoining the townsite of old trails high grade ore showing much gold in the free was encountered last spring by J J casey on the property of the casey jones company a corporation in which dr J C francis assistant superintendent of the tom reed mine V S rowley J J casey and others are heavily interested A shaft is to be sunk to a depth of feet before attempting to prove up the that makes such an encouraging showing at surface the big jim company is in line for the same character of values on that portion of its property adjoining the tom reed mine on the southeast as obtained in the tom reed main workings ane is nearing hearing a depth of feet where a crosscut is to be run to and through tile the extension of the tom reed ledge the boundary cone mine producer of some come of the richest and handsomest crystal zed gold ore ever unearthed is showing ore at a depth of ZOO feet the carter mine nearby has four feet of ore on the foot level that samples 28 per ton the treasure key property recently taken over by W S wise and other los angeles people who dominate the affairs of the orion mining company has 30 ore at a depth of fifty feet development of the property was started about ten days ago the mazona property adjoining the carter has 50 ore at a depth of thirty feet the gold reed mine located near the center of the camps most productive area is showing four feet of 32 ore at a depth of feet in the upper levels ore having a value of 85 per ton was mined and sacked sa specimen ore showing gold in the free and assaying 45 per ton wa was S opened a few days days ago at shallow depth on the gilt edge group adjoining the leland vivian mine from the foregoing facts and figures the reader may draw the deduction that the as bertion that oatman is a low grade camp is at least debatable |
