Show the mines of rochester BY JOHN P F GOWAN COWAN ore of commercial grade was discovered in rochester nevada in november 1912 long prior to that date the large quartz outcrop out crop was known and located but st strange as it may seem no one suspected eted the value in the float rock which wast was scattered all over the hill side in the fall of 1912 some six or seven car loads were gathered up and shipped to the smelter which averaged better than 40 per ton in silver and gold the shipping of this float and the discovery ot fine oreon ore on what is lowthe now the big four lease was the cause of the boom in rochester in the winter of 1913 the main ore bodies discovered so far are on the crown point claims of the rochester mines company the ore occurs along a series of fault fractures in a rhyolite formation these fractures follow a general north and nd south direction and dip to the west only one wall the hanging is well defined along this hanging wall is a gouge of from six inches to a foot in thickness on the south end of the crown point claim in what Is known as the codd and big four leases therease there ther eare are two well defined and distinct mi salt lake gy city ma manager nager roche rochester s ter mines company veins these hese two unite at a point near the north end line of the codd lease it was on oil the west branch of this vein that the first discovery was made and from which most of the ore has been shipped so far some four months ago two gross cross cuts were run from the west vein to the one on oil the east the one in the codd lease was at a depth of feet from the surface and anc was some sixty feet long the one from tile the big four was encountered at a depth of feet from the surface and the tunnel encountered the vein at a distance of feet the ore encountered proved to be good grade and the vein large and strong drifting has been done on each of these levels to the end lines of the lease A was sunk from the lowest level on tile the codd lease to a a depth of fifty feet the ore shows strong at the bottom of this some prospecting has been done on the north end of the claim showing a network of veins and considerable amount of mill in ill ore but no systematic development has yet been done production to J january andary ast 1st up to january 1st ast 1915 the camp of rochester has produced in shipp shipping ng ore approximately pr of tills this rochester mines hasi has to its credit the packard and the other mines about the packard is a very promising property the ore occurs in a decomposed rhyolite and is the highest in value of any ore shipped out of rochester new mill of rochester mines the new ton mill of the rochester mines company is nearing hearing completion and will be in commission about february this mill will solve the problem for rochester as a very large part of the veins are of milling grade and would not pay to ship to a smelter with ithe transportation problem solved and with the mill in operation with electrical power in the camp there is no reason why rochester should not be one of the best producers in the state of nevada |
