Show park city utah in n 1914 BY CHAS the year 1914 while not one of the best in the more than four decades of park cites mining history yet it has on the whole been a successful one and a year of substantial progress both in the opening of new ore bodies and in the advances made in the perfecting of new metallurgical processes and the installation of new mining machinery and equipment had it not been for the great fire at the daly west on december 28 1913 and for the war in europe it can be stated as a plain matter of fact that 1914 would in all probability have been one of the banner years of this famous old camp if not the banner year this is certainly saying a great deal for a mining camp that dates from about 1868 and is now nearly fifty years old and has produced about one hundred and fifty millions of dollars worth of the precious and base metals and paid about fifty millions in dividends most mining camps are dead or have decidedly seen their best days after a continuous production or some forty or fifty years though park city is an old camp a very old camp measured in years and in uninterrupted and gradually increasing production yet it appears from the matter of fact view of the mining engineer and geologist to have the best of its history in the future perhaps it would be well to give some of the reasons for making this statement in the first place there are no worked out mines in the park city district the ontario the oldest large producer in the district while perhaps a mine that has seen its best days I 1 say perhaps is yet not an exhausted mine by any mean there are known deposits of several hundred thousands of tons of good millin milling gore ore in this mine besides considerable ore of shipping grade on account of the burning of the daly west mill and hoisting works as above mentioned and the low price of the metals the management of the ontario have confined themselves mainly to exploratory work and to the blocking out of ore during 1914 the mines operating co the mines operating company a company formed to lease and work the upper mining alining engineer park city utah levels of this mine have treated some thirty thousand tons of ore in its mill during the year the company shut down the plant a short time ago in order to make some changes in the mill and perhaps the low price of silver was in a measure another reason for closing down the mill this mill marks a new era in milling certain kinds of ore and utilizes a new process known as the holt dern which is very successful the process and milling practice have previously been fully described in the mining review the daly mine the daly the second mine of the park city district to become a big dividend payer some thirty years ago is still young and vigorous the management of the daly has kept a force of men working steadily throughout the year blocking out ore and in general development work some high grade ore has been shipped but for reasons above mentioned low price of metals metal ls no effort has been made to ship a large tonnage the management will likely build an up to date mill in the near future to treat the milling ore in the mine the silver king coalition the silver king coalition or silver king as it is generally called is the third mine of the camp to become a big dividend payer notable progress has been made at this mine during the year the silver hill underground station and hoisting works installed therein during the year 1914 are considered the finest and best of the kind in the world and have been fully described in the mining review the management of this company has kept a large force of men throughout the year at work in the further development of its immense holdings and in the blocking out olit of both first class and milling ore the regular weekly shipments of first class and mill concentrates have been very large and if metal prices were satisfactory no doubt the weekly shipments would be doubled several improvements of minor importance in the companas comp anys big up to date mill have been made and a large tonnage of milling ore has been treated the mill having been run to almost capacity without a shut down except holidays etc throughout the year in these trying times of low metal prices the silver king coalition and daly judge have been towers of strength for park city the daly west the daly west the fourth big mine and dividend payer of park city in point of time has kept a small force of men at work in the mine throughout the year and has since june kept a very large force of men at work in erecting new hoisting plant and new mill to take the place of those burned everything is now in readiness at the daly west mill and hoisting works for the largest production in the mines history both the mill and hoisting plant are superior to the old and the old plants were considered among the best in the country mr F W sherman who is well known to be one of the ablest mill men in the united states has tended the building of the new mill and this mill is the very last word to date in mills of its kind that is wet concentration the daly judge the daly judge the fifth big dividend payer of park city in point of time has had a very successful year the regular quarterly dividends have been paid and the usual big force of men kept busy in mine and mill with the exception of a partial shutdown shut down of five weeks during the summer for re timbering the mine shaft the daly judges mill superintendent mr richard hale has made considerable improvements in the tig big mill without losing a shift or making any noise about it silver king consolidated the silver king consolidated the sixth big dividend payer to gladden stockholders with generous dividend checks began production and shipment of high grade ore on a large scale about the first of last year however this property had been an occasional shipper of high grade ore for some ten years prior to 1914 and had paid some hundreds of thousands of dollars in dividends before 1914 this is the youngest of the big dividend payers but in park CRY city once a big mine and dividend payer always a big mine and dividend payer how the district grew some f orty forty years ago park city was a camp of one big mine the ontario then about eight years ago it became a camp of two big mines the ontario and daly and then some eight years later it became a camp of three big mines the ontario daly and silver king then about eight years later it became a camp of f four 5 ur dig big dividend payers the ontario daly silver king and daly west quincy about eight years later the daly judge was added to the first of the really big dividend payers and then about eight years later or about coll consolidated the beginning of 1914 the silver king soli dated was added to the list the town of park city has grown slowly but steadily for over forty years as the big mines have increased in number from one to six new paying mines predicted if i might be permitted to do a little I 1 prophesying I 1 would say that the next six I 1 big mines and steady dividend payers to be added to the above list will be the am flag thom thompson apson quincy little bell 1 three kings curtis copper apex an and I 1 very 51 likely lik elYthe the california com comstock stock all AH of these seven except the three kings have pro deuced considerable ore for years just as the Ont aria daly silver king daly west quincy daly judge and king consolidated produced more or less or for years before they beca became me real big mines and dividend payers the american flag it was thought during the early part of the year that the american flag would be one of the real big dividend payers of 1 the camp before january 1 1915 there is a very large tonnage of good milling ore in the mine besides consider considerable abe high grade c ore all blocked out the american flag in r teresta bought the grasselli chemical com banys mill located on the north side of park city a mill that cost the grasselli chemical company about and which was comparatively new and re molded S it last summer for thip the treatment of amer ican flag ores but owing to the low price of silver the chief constituent of the american flag ores the mill was kept in operation but a short time there is is a considerable force of men at work at the copper apex thompson quincy and three kings besides the great number of men who are working on numerous pros 1 pacts throughout park city district and making occasional shipments of ore which helps materially to pay the expenses of development the curtis property was closed down in the early part of the summer on account of some misunderstanding about money or lack of money to finance it for two or three months while the new mill was being warmed up this property is really a mine and like the american flag only needs a little temporary financing and a favorable metal market to become a regular shipper and dividend payer park city is young yet just a babe but the best informed mining men predict that it will grow up during the next twenty years to mans stature and a few optimists stoutly maintain that in another forty years it will grow to be a giant but two park city mines paid dividends in 1914 these being the daly judge with to its credit and the silver king consolidated with ore shipment 3 during the year park city produced approximately tons of ore and concentrates valued at distributed in point of tonnage as follows tons silver king coalition daly judge daly west
