Show ophir iphi r dry canyon and stockton BY J H COOKE A al E ophir canyon probably the first location made in ophir canyon utah was the mountain gem in 1864 bates and stanton located lion hill shortly after due to the rich silver contents of the ore combined with the fact that the ore bodies made close to the surface it was only a short time until the camp was booming in 1870 ophir had a population of up to 1876 walker brothers property the jim continued to produce under the supervision or of marcus daly in 1882 excitement had salt sait lake lake city manager mono develop anent company abated and ophir was practically deserted in 1886 col E A wall built a concentrating mill to treat the sulphides sulp hides of the ophir hill and this was really the beginning of the present substantial ophir the ophir hill mine the ophir hill mine the property of senator dark clark of montana is distinctive in that its ore deposits occur in lime beddings up against the there are six or seven of these bedded deposits some of which are fifty feet in thickness the ore bodies are uniform in assay value this is undoubtedly one of the best equipped mines in the state employing in the neigh boyhood of men in the mine and mill and shipping around fifty cars of concen B a month the mill is of the latest design and a very close extraction I 1 is 18 made 1 it is treating at the present time about tons of ore a day with three shifts I 1 the new tunnel simplified the mining re fl 1 the costs to a very low figi figure lre the 11 ore tonnage exposed is apparently as great 1 I at the present time as ever in the history 1 of the mine owing to the low price of metals no shipments have been made for two months or more besides company work there is consid 1 erable leasing going on lion hill on the south side rising rather abruptly from the canyon floor is lion hill with 1 out exception in the state of utah this mineralized section has produced the high est grade of silver ore the ore occurs mostly in the fissures with enrichments enrich ments and enlargements at the intersections while i it is impossible to get an accurate record of the ore shipped one can well be safe in saying that this hill has produced some millions hardly any of the old time min ing men in the state but remember the chloride point northern light lion hill hilli columbia circle and buffalo lion hill consolidated organized a few years ago for the purpose of working the different proper properties in an economical and businesslike business like manner the lion hill con was organized this company is a consolidation of the choicest and richest ground on lion hill the ground embraced in the consolidation in eluded the columbia circle and northern Nort herni 11 light group A great amount of develop ment work has been done exposing a rather large body of milling ore some shipments of high grade have hav e also been made thet the property did not operate very extensively in however it is the intention of the af company to start work in the early part of 1915 1 the buffalo consolidated adjoining the lion hill consolidated is 19 5 like all lion at the buffalo consolidated hill properties it is noted for the rich sil ver values of its ore leased during 1914 1 to the st clair brothers it produced with the employment of seven or eight men ten 0 o shipments of ore which netted or on tj it is fa h better than 2000 per car when taken into consideration that these cars c a rs av enraged less than thirty five tons each the high silver values become apparent re bently at a depth of feet in the incline which looks 18 a new fissure was encountered very promising returns from which assay c lead ounces silver 11 per cent de e gold with an excess of iron A very v fluxing flexing ore indeed the montana mine t adjoining adjoin ig on the nor north th side of the camp the ophir hill is the montana bonta ronta na during the year little or no work was done but it is understood that it is the intention of eastern parties interested in the property to resume operations in 1915 the cliff mining co the cliff mine better known as the buckeye a adjoins the ophir hill and montana properties the ore makes in bedded deposits conformable with the strata which are cut by northeast fissures it has been a very heavy producer for a number of years giving employment to seventy div five e or men the ore is conveyed from the mine by aerial tram to bins on the ophir and st john railway A steady production of fifteen to twenty cars a month was made in 1914 on the chicago which belongs to this company a body of silver lead ore was opened up dry canyon district adjoining ophir canyon on the north nort h is dry canyon like ophir canyon it was in the early seventies one of the heaviest P producing ro camps in the state noted principally for its silver values and dependent upon the price of silver when that metal was de the canyon became practically deserted however through the confidence 11 of a few mining men some of the I 1 properties opened up and work was carried on in a desultory sort of way up to 1909 at which time more capital came in since 1909 work has continued more or less steadily the mode of ore occurrence is somewhat similar to that on the ophir side the hidden treasure adjoining the cliff mine on the dry canyon side is the hidden treasure one of the noted producers of the canyon this property has operated steadily for a number er of years although principally a silver lead mine nevertheless shipments of high grade copper have been made some of the highest grade zinc ore in the state has also been een shipped from the hidden treasure in the ithe last f few ew years the property is equipped with an elec ric drill compressor and small hoist in the upper workings it has been worked extensively on the easing plan which has proved a great benet to the owners as well as the leasers leaders lea sers nc lic luding the company men and leasers leaders lea sers he ie force employed for 1914 was around hirty men there was shipped in 1914 of silver lead ore about 2000 tons and of line ille tons the Eurek aOphir this property was idle in 1914 although somewhat ome what of a producer in 1913 it is re arted that the owners are considering 9 pening dening up in the spring the brooklyn t bother another of the comeback come back mines of dry anyon is the brooklyn under an a ve e policy of development connection was made with the old belfast shaft and new bodies of ore opened up the brooklyn employed emp loyes six to eight men and shipped about ten cars of ore in 1914 the ore is very desirable the brooklyn being the only mine in the canyon whose ore carries excess iron the management is very hopeful for the coming year and feels confident that dividends are in sight the mono mine noted in 1872 and 1873 for the high grade silver ore it produced was the mono this property under the name of the mono development company embraces over acres of patented ground considerable ore has been shipped in the last four years dry canyon consolidated the dry canyon consolidated performed a large amount of development work in 1914 mr garber reports that the country in which he is pro prospecting specking spec ting at the present time is highly mineralized and a body of ore is looked for any time no shipments were made in 1914 the blue jay mine development work on the blue jay was resumed in 1914 the property being leased to percy williams some machinery was installed reports from the property indicate that it is looking good other properties in dry canyon operated in 1914 by leasers leaders lea sers bac each h of which sent in a small lot of ore was the utah queen and T mammon stockton district immediately to the north and east of the town of stockton are located a number of famous old producers the time was when stockton supported rather a large population considered as a mining camp if not the first then about the first mining in the state was done here in the fall of 1863 a party of U S soldiers under the command of gen H B connor discovered ore in this district and a number of locations were made unlike ophir and dry canyon the ore bodies in stockton do not make on the beddings to any great extent it is essentially a fissure camp local enrichments enrich ments and enlargements large ments oc curing at the intersection of the north and south and east and west fissures bullion coalition mine minces this property known widely as the honerine consisting of underground workings and concentrating mill is situated north of stockton the ore is an argente ferous galena of both shipping and milling grade the persistency of the ore deposits to great depths guarantee a long life to the property the company is reticent preferring to accomplish results in the property rather than in the newspapers A force of between thirty and forty men was employed throughout the year development in the new shaft from the tunnel level was pro prosecuted secured vigorously it is understood that a very p promising rom ising body of ore was ocene opened d up in v virgin irgin t territory during the year the mill was remodeled and some shipments of first class concentrates were made as well as regular shipments of crude ore to the smelters shelters sm elters the new stockton one of the steady producers of this district for 1914 was the new stockton better known locally as the ben harrison and leased by eagle campbell and mills this property has sent to the smelters shelters sm elters cars of ore in the last two years an average force of nine to twelve men has been steadily employed considerable development work has been done in drifting north toward the old salvation hercules property mineralized ground carrying very high values was encountered and the indications are that a commercial body of ore is in sight while the ore shipped has been low grade and permitted of a very low margin of profit the 0 operators pera tors are well satisfied with the profits made and the work accomplished shed the marshall property mrs lena larsen one of the few successful mining women of the west operated this property the past year A working force of four to five men was employed some sinking and crosscutting was done and the ore followed for a considerable distance two carloads of ore of a very fair quality were shipped during the year the galena king another stockton mine from which results are expected in 1915 is the galena king while it has been idle the greater part of 1914 indications are very fair the work will start up in the early part of the year the galena king has quite a record as a producer |
