Show 0 LEAD AND ZINC INDUSTRY IN 1913 A preliminary statement of the lead and zinc mining industry in 1913 has been compiled by C E Sl ebenthal of the united states geological survey from the most reliable sources available at this time those from the western states being taken from the more complete estimates prepared by the survey for the individual states it appears probable that the mine production of domestic lead in ore in 1913 was tons making a small gain about tons over the tons output in 1912 or less than I 1 per cent when the mine output of lead in 1913 is compared with the smelter output of domestic refined lead in 1913 making allowances for lead in domestic lead or lead in pigments produced from ores and for lead lost in smelting smelling sm elting it is evident that the mine production no more than equaled the smelter production for the year this was a result of the continuation of smelting smelling sm elting operations in the soft lead amel teries although the southeast missouri mines were closed down for some time an account of labor tr troubles cubles the loss in production in southeast missouri was made up by lains gains in lead output by idaho utah and colorado zinc mining was greatly stimulated by the high prices for spelter which prevailed in 1912 and in the early part of 1913 and the operations begun at that time continued through the year in spite of the depression in the spelter market during the later part of the year with the result that the mine output of recoverable zinc was tons a gain of tons or nearly 10 per cent over the tons produced in 1912 this gain was due chiefly to the large output of the butte superior mine of montana though good gains were also made in idaho new mexico tennessee and new jersey the largest loss in zinc production was shown by the upper mississippi valley region although colorado and the joplin region also lost slightly in output the following table shows the estimated mine production of lead in ore and of recoverable cove rabIe zinc in ore by the states together with the gain or loss in output of each metal over the output in 1912 new mexico new mexico produced a little less lead than in 1912 but made a gain of nearly 60 per cent in zinc production the lea lead d pro i is estimated at 2347 tons and the recoverable zinc at tons the larger part of the zinc production was made in the magdalena district and was the output of the tri bullion companas comp anys concentration and magnetic separation mill and the new wet concentration and notation flotation plant of the ozark mining smelting smelling Sm elting company the utter group of zinc claims in the pinos altos district was purchased by the empire zinc company lead content recoverable of ore zinc content of ore state output zinc production Product lon is estimated at tons as compared to tons in 1912 the leadville district yielded a large part of the lead output of the state and tons or 75 per cent of the zinc output the district produced tons of zinc carbonate ore containing 27 per cent of zinc as against tons containing per cent in 1912 the aspen district doubled its lead output and the rico district made large gains in both lead and zinc production I 1 montana montana had a small increase in lead output but more than trebled its zinc production the output of zinc being tons as compared with tons in 1912 a gain of tons or over per cent the zinc output of montana is at present almost wholly choily the product of the butte superior Super idt mine amine the new wet concentration and flotation mill treated to tons ns daily during the first half of the year and after the second treated 1000 unit went into commission tons of ore tons daily in august was treated for tons of concentrates averaging per cent zinc representing cent of the zinc content a recovery of per of the ore A similar combined wet concentration and flotation min mill is under construction at the elm orlu oriu mine which was a large producer of zinc before the ohp destruction of its mill it is understood that some of the big copper mines have developed large resources of zinc ore and it is confidently predicted montana will rival the largest of the zinc producing states by displacing wisconsin montana now ranks fourth in zinc production idaho takes first place in lead the lead production of idaho increased nearly 10 per cent amounting to tons a gain of tons over the figure reached in 1912 idaho this year regains first place in the mine production of lead which position missouri has held since 1906 the zinc output also made a great gain being tons or more than 70 per cent more than in 1912 over 90 per cent of the lead output came from the coeur dalene region and the gain was due to the increased activities of mines in that area the zinc output was largely due to the operations in the same region of the success morning green hill cleveland interstate calla han and hercules mines the old frisco mine near gem was and will add greatly to the future zinc output of the state utah gains in lead utah had a zinc production of tons practically the same as in 1912 but made a good gain in lead production aggregating tons an increase of tons or about 12 per cent more than the production of the previous year this increase was due to a larger output of low grade ore in the bingham district the park city and gintic tintic c districts also contributing the horn silver mine was the largest producer of zinc sulphide ore with important contributions from mines in the ophir mount nebo bingham and park city districts silicate and carbonate ores were produced by the tintic gintic district arizona increases lead product arizona nearly doubled in lead output although the zinc production was about stationary the figures being tons of lead and tons of zinc the lead ore was chiefly from the mines at bisbee in which lead ores occur in addition to copper ore the tennessee mine in mohave county was an important producer the golconda mine formerly the largest zinc producer was in operation only part of the year the san xavier mine in pima county shipped a large quantity of ore an and much zinc concentrate was recovered from mohave co county nty ores in the concentrator at needles in washington there was no ship shipment met of zinc buethe but the output of lead though small was more than double that of the preceding J year being estimated at tons as corn com pared with 64 tons tolls in 1912 |
