Show GOLD MINING IN california by G chester brown E M the revival of quartz mining throughout california during the year 1913 has materially increased the gold production again giving this state first place with an output exceeding the show a decrease due to a lower grade of dredging ground the closing down of all but one in shasta county on account of ligi tation over the fumes tends also to decrease the gold output as several mines in this county produce ores that can only be treated by smelting smelling sm elting operations the deep mines of amador county as well as other properties on the mother lode are in increasing their output and several prospects are being developed northern california especially trinity siskiyou you and shasta counties is also attracting tr the mining investor and modern reduction plants are being installed the abundance of water and timber makes this section of california an ideal territory for mining operations the gladstone and midas are the two large gold producers of shasta county nevada county is still a steady producer from the deep mines of the grass valley and nevada city districts and m mining ining ope operations rations are pursued along up to date lines the largest operators being the north star and empire mining companies the high grade ore of the Alle ghaney district sierra merra county and the wonderful production record of the fightner Tight ner mine has caused renewed interest in this well known section the yellow astor mine in the district is the principal producer of kern county in 1913 there were approximately 1000 producing gold mines in this state of which 80 were quartz and placers there were some sixty seven dredges in operation the three great dredging fields of california are at oroville butte county in the vicinity of marysville marksville Marys ville yuba county and folsom sacramento county there are three dredges in operation in h 1 calaveras talaveras Cala veras county ten counties in all mak m ing a total of sixty seven boats contribute to the placer production from dredges the i la grange the largest operative hydraulic mine in california and the alta bert dredge are the main placer producers of trinity county while the richest of the gravel deposits of the state have been worked by dredges yet the increased efficiency in methods of operation has offset the poorer ground handled so that the total output is but little less than in 1912 |
