Show MINING MEN NOT YET ORGANIZED the third meeting of the mining men to consider organization was held at the local stock exchange at 11 february 7 the committee on organization not being ready to report the meeting adjourned after some speeches to meet again at the call of the chairman among the speakers was ivas robert bradford of the university of utah who spoke on the work now being done by the research department in connection with the bureau of mines and urged the operation cooperation co of the mining men dorsey A lyon acting chief metallurgist of the united states bureau of mines also outlined the purpose of the affiliation with the university and stated that he is here to organize the work some of the pressing problems are the low grade ores of our prominent camps as well as in less known camps mr lyon was formerly employed at the midvale so that utah conditions are not wholly new to him W mont ferry spoke on the need of organization emphasizing the ponts brought out at former meetings as to the need of organization and relating some tales of the agnor ignorance ance of eastern people and congressmen on the problems of the west organization to give due publicity to western mining should be pushed it would also be desirable to have an organization to assist the state legislature in p assing proper laws for mining professor bradford anno announced that the next meeting of the american institute of mining engineers is to be held in salt lake and urged a getting together to make the welcome to the organization impressive chairman joseph read a letter from james gallbreath Call breath secretary of the american mining congress part of which follows 1 I nave just read the report in the salt lake mining review of your recent meeting looking to the creation of a state mining organization 1 I note that the discussion made especial reference to the need of a strong campaign to prevent the adoption of a leasing system for our mineral lands as one of the vital questions which should be given attention 1 1 1 I believe that the west should make a a determined effort perhaps not against a leasing system but surely against a federal leasing system which anticipates the control of our mineral development by officials so far away as to make a proper understanding of conditions practically impossible and so far away as to be beyond tha reach of the local influences which are striving to bring about the development of western resources the west must face the necessity necess nece asty ty of a publicity campaign camp ign through which the east may be better informed of western conditions and the impracticability as well as the injustice of this system brought to their attention the east with reluctance is forced to admit that the west has as good a right to expect that all of the people shall derive a profit from the use of the hudson river as the people of new york have to expect a profit from the use of a water power in utah 1 I am strongly of opinion that the distinction made between federal ownership and private ownership as it relates to rights of way for public utilities is very unjust rights of way are now to be secured only at the caprice of a federal official 1 I am writing this in the hope that at your coming meeting you will devise some plan by which the mining men of utah may unite with the mining men of other states in a strong determined campaign to right these conditions |
