| Show gratifying activity in eldorado canyon district the history of mineral discoveries in eldorado canyon district dark clark county nevada dates back as far fai as the year 1861 when a party of prospectors camped near the california nevada line fired to enthusiasm by recitals of gold discoveries made by indians invaded a region which has ever since been a lure to mining men cap capitalists baliss ta liss and investors disappointment at first was the their r portion making their first camp near the head Eldorado of canyon the prospectors soon discovered that the gold proclaimed by the indians to exist there was nothing more than sulphate of iron with which tain ledges in that locality were impregnated nothing daunted however these early baray pioneers continued their search and in due time had discovered the great wall street mine the black hawk and s several everal other bonanzas in that portion of what is now known as eldorado canyon district these remarkable discoveries soon became noised abroad and in due time other prospectors began flocking flecking into the district and a more thorough search was inaugurated resulting in the discovery of the wonderful further down the canyon the mocking bird the capitol mines the tough nut the queen bee silver legion rich hill and other splendid ledges on nob hill organization of the southwest company in the year 1880 the southwest mining company was organized by san francisco parties the incorporation being based on the to which li later on the wall street mocking bird doughnut Tough nut and other claims were added the company tak ing out thousands and even mi lions it is claimed in its operations up to the year 1885 it was during this year that the panic so crippled the company that its property was sold at sheriffs sale passing into the hands of the late joseph wharton of philadelphia and it is even yet owned by his estate formation and ge geology eldorado canyon district its formation f or mation and geology was described in an article in the mining review in its issue of june 30 1908 1908 the section devoted to formation and geology being herewith reproduced as fol lows lows eldorado district clark county nevada is located on the northern end of the opal range of mountains emmons in the TJ S geological survey describes the formation as being a belt of quartz gneiss and schist which is flanked here and nevada eldorado mines co hoist at nob hill four or five miles south of eldorado canyon the prevailing rocks are and and biotitic gneiss es among the miners and pro prospectors specters spec tors of eldorado canyon the formation is designated as syenite s and diorite the ore bearing belt is about ten miles in length by six miles wide the mountain ranges have a northerly and southerly trend and the min eral bearing fissures and veins have an easterly and westerly strike cutting the heavy river range the main fissures an and d ledges of the district in rn portion are the rand mckin mckinley ley blackhawk quaker city honest miner mocking bird wall street and the deeping in the heart of the belt these veins are covered by a stupendous ov overflow efflow of ma malapas mal apai lapal east of this overflow these veins are designated as the te chatti cup skylark rover flagstaff san juan lone cabin buster and the georgia on the south side of the belt beginning at the west end are the rich hill silver legion mizpah victor queen dandy sphinx togo whale morning star lucky dan sunny south and capitol fissures and veins throughout while the veins are large often mammoth in their proportions and give every evidence and indication of continuity and permanency the values principally gold and silver are often and most I 1 as P Z egv ak qa yr A J 4 al birdseye view of the capitol mines the country is interspersed by great porphyry rhyolite and andesite dykes some of these parallel the veins ore making in the contacts in other instances the dykes cut through gli the veins without in any way disturbing them the mineral bearing zone shows two distinct flows of different ages which have further enriched the prim primitive iLive ores one of these and the oldest resulted from an eruption on the north side of the belt the other being an intrusion on the south side w which came up between the syenite and the range of granite mountains mountain 3 flanking the syenite the fact that the mineral belt is so large and powerful breaking through as it does the river range would indicate great depth and permanency the development of the to the this shaft is deeper now and in ore and the flagstaff to more than feet going to prove this assertion the surface ores in character are quartz and talc associated with spar occasioned casio ned by secondary enrichment the ores of the south side of the belt are chlorides carbonates and bromides with depth the ore changes to a complex sulphide carrying gold silver and lead most of the pres ores of the district whether a complex su sulphide L or a lead carbonate will pan free gold an attractive district eldorado canyon district cannot but appeal to the intelligence of the experienced mining man nowhere else can there be found such a profusion of ledges and veins the district is a large ona one and is miner generally in the sulphide form but fre free milling in one or two localities particularly in copper canyon there are extensive areas of copper bearing ore oxides and sulphides sulp hides A large amount of work has been done thing like systematic and intelligent ode operation was inaugurated the leader il in I 1 this policy beng being the nevada eldorado mines company managed by that veteran and sue mining man george A duncan following this lead might be mentioned the eldorado canyon gold mining company camran y george bergman general manager the santa barbara searchlight mining company and the capitol mines the blackhawk also in spasmodic moments has nia made de noted improvements while at the Te chatti cup the determined effort to prove the existence of ore with depth has met with gratifying success the greatest development however has been in the nevada eldorado where extensive and systematic operation has b blocked cocked out an enormous tonnage of splendid milling ore with frequent occurrences of ore of a much higher grade at the capitol much improvement has been made of late and important discoveries have been reported the nevada eagle near the capitol D E mortimer Alor timer superintendent perin has opened a twenty foot body of ll 11 ore on the foot level and this pr property is to be embellished with reduction works at an early date the santa barbara john al taylor manager with its loder smelting smelling sm elting plant idle at nelson the metropolis of the district is to build a concentrator at once so as to supply the lack of flux the eldorado crown has its mill in operation and is reg ular y sending out gold bullion the queen bee is putting in a 20 ton cus or mt 4 77 4 at ew gm MIN 5 L 4 scene in copper canyon copper prince mine years the district has been in existence but most of this has been desultory in character and often unprofitable because of long distance from markets and the difficulties of transportation and it was not until the last few years that any torn tom mill and is still further blocking out oui its great ore body which is one of the largest in the district while all over the calp cam unusual activity and extensive develop me is noticeable miles J eldorado canyon is located twenty north of searchlight and forty miles south of las vegas with good wagon roads from either place it is destined to become one of the most productive and most popular planned one of which has the machinery on the ground greater progress vastly greater could be made if capital was available for many of these properties to operate on aall oiz X tracing the extension of the ledge mining camps in nevada or in the west for that matter and at t the present time has a list of fifty mines in course of operation operate n and development according to the age of las vegas nevada which says fifty mines in Ope operation raton this section of southern nevada the only rea really ily truly cross my heart name blown in the bottle southern nevada is steadily developing mineral resources of enormous extent and value this development of great importance to the future prosperity of dark clark county is going forward without any brass band accompaniment or blare of trumpet to disturb the apathy or indifference of those generally credited with a knowledge of such matters in the eldorado district forty miles south of las vegas the county seat there are twenty five or more properties developing most of them in a small way but working in ore of good milling or concentrating grade this district which is ten or twelve miles square has probably the best showing of mineralized veins and ledges in the state few of these properties are working over twelve or fifteen men and for the most part they are at this time drifting along the strike of veins opened in shaft shaf t work at depths ranging from to feet under these conditions a great deal of cf ore is being blocked out generally the eldorado ores are sulfides sul sulf fides ldes carrying both gold and silver and there is no reason why this should not make one of the largest producing mineral sections in this state the past three months there have been two mills constructed and put in operation two more designed as custom plants are a scale where both sinking and drifting could be followed at the same time one of these properties operating with eight or ten men has opened up vast bodies is sending out regular shipments one of the best mines in the district has been idle for a year carrying out a plan of reorganization the active properties at this time include the nevada mines company operating the mcgregor and duncan mines on one of which a 1 1000 foot shaft is being sunk the other being down feet with over 2000 feet of drifting in ore the capitol mines company has over 1000 feet of work and is extending opera eions rapidly they have an abundance of shipping ore the nevada eagle has a foot shaft with extensive drifts to the ore showing in a sixteen foot vein the eagle recently made a strike opening a fine vein in the shaft which is equipped with complete hoisting plant air compressor and machine drills the sphinx owned by the oxnard company is working in a fine vein that has produced a good deal of high grade and has about feet of development the silver legion has a fine vein of ore opened at the level by a foot drift in ore with several thousand tons of ore available of about 30 grade the rich hill has over 1000 feet of tunnel work on the vein with one tunnel below the other in ore of 30 to 70 grade some of the richest ore ever found in the district has been cut in the rich hill work ilk V looking out of the wall street mine of ore sufficient to justify a stamp mill which we understand is now being planned another has several thousand tons on the dump and has been authorized by the owners to install all the machinery mach isery of whatever kind that may be necessary this pyo property perty ings A ton smelter plant has been installed to treat the rich hill ores and a ton concentrator plant will be installed by this company for the treatment tre adment of custom ores the black hawk cons has about 3 feet of work and is equipped with a ten stamp mill the occidental has a forty ton mill and over 2000 feet of development in a fine body of ore the eldorado mizpah has about feet of work and is in some very hi high gh grade ore the eldorado deeping has a couple of foot shafts and is in a fifty foot vein of milling ore the eldorado crown has a tunnel en cn the vein all ail in ore of good milling grada grad 3 equipped with fifty ton mill and cyanide plant the Eph strete adjoins the crown and has very much the same class of ore some of which is very high grade the success has one of the best properties in camp and has sent out several shipments running above per ton the queen bee has one of the big veins of the district and is installing a twenty stamp custom plant the ben ezra on nob hill is running a big tunnel to cut the vein which shows a very good grade of ore in quantity the gold star is one of the recent mines showing satisfactory development and a shipping grade of ore the rich hill extension is on the rich rc i hill vein and is deve developing a large body of ore the dewey wall street san juan starlight lucky dan copper prince truax and others have good strong veins and sufficient development to show extensive mineral deposits A nelson correspondent to the searchlight bulletin says the capitol has recently made a great strike of shipping ore heavy sulphide sim ilar to duncans and the the strike was made on the iron claim some very handsome specimens have been found it is reported that there is four and a half feet of high grade the nevada eagle has crosscut its ledge on the level feet and has cut through thirty five feet of vein matter awen ty two feet of which shows after very careful sampling an average of better than 10 a ton at the nevada eldorado manager G A duncan at a depth of feet in his new prospect shaft has found the same rich ore as in the main shaft and levels on the flagstaff this new shaft is about 1000 fe feet et east of the main workings and beyond the big dyke which cuts off the ore shoots in all the main drifts the picking up of the ore in this direction reflects great credit on mr duncan A mr lyons has been engaged this week in making an extensive sampling of the mine the eldorado crown recently cleaned up and aid shipped eleven and three quarters pounds of bullion valued at at the Eph strete babcock and are out high grade on the midway claim A shipment will follow later |
