Show COAL OUTPUT FOR 1910 state coal inspector J E pettit has submitted his annual report to governor spry it is an interesting document and shows that the coal mining industry of utah is rapidly gaining ground in his report mr pettit says the production of coal for the year was short tons an increase of tons over 1900 there were tons of coke produced in the same period a decrease of tons as compared with 1909 explosives were used as follows black powder pounds giant powder pounds this makes one pound of powder for every three and three fourth tons of coal produced men employed in and around the mines number an increase of over the number employed last year the average days worked were and the average amount of coal produced per man was tons fifteen fatal accidents there were 69 accidents in and around the mines in the year fifteen resulted fatally 22 were serious and 32 were not serious three of the fatal accidents occurred outside of the mines the per cent of fatalities per 1000 was causes of the fifteen fatal accidents were as follows run over by cars 5 fall of rock 4 f fall all of coal 4 fall on pump gearing 1 premature blast 1 fees collected for the year aggregated it is recommended that the bond 0 of the inspector be reduced to a year and that his hi s salary be increased to at least the average salary paid to mine superintendents throughout the state the production of coal by counties is given as follows carbon tons summit summit emery sanpete San pete uintah other small mines americans predominate the nationality of men employed in the mines is given as follows americans 1289 germans 34 Fin landers aus arians french 34 italians greeks negroes 10 japanese slavs 6 scandinavians 7 mexicans 1 in the period covered by the report a number of draeger rescue apparatus have been purchased by the utah fuel company and distributed among four pf af the com banys mines at clear creek winter quarters castle gate and sunnyside Sunny side A number of the mine officials have been trained in the use of the appliances but they are handicapped by the fact that oxygen has to be shipped from buffalo N Y government rescue car it was expected that salt lake would be the headquarters for a government rescue car but rock springs wyo has been selection as the headquarters of the district which includes wyoming and utah the car will visit each mining camp and the use of its apparatus will be explained it is recommended that all coal and hydrocarbon hydro carbon mines in the state be placed under the coal and hydrocarbon hydro carbon mining laws of the state this recommendation is made by reason of the fact that there are more than thirty small coal mines in the state some of which are underground a considerable distance and it is difficult to get their tonnage or other necessary information as the law now stands the production of hydrocarbon hydro carbon in the year was tons the american asphalt company and the raven mining company not reporting their output |
