Show THE GRUNTER MINE rich idaho gold property in which salt lakers are interested herald salmon idaho the grunter mine at shoup is one of the most hopeful gold properties in leahl county it belongs to fred phillips of los angeles Wate waterman ritan bros of salt lake city and the wallace estate of which M M mcpherson is representative during the last two years the property has been in charge of E S suydam in that time he has traced the vein almost to the level of the mill and at the lowest point the vein is so wide that neither wall is in sight A part of the vein is honeycomb quartz which carries high values in gold assays essays ranging all the way from ld to to the ton the balance of the vein is a hard quartz of lower grade and heavy with sulphides sulp hides the work is mainly done by tunneling the vein runs northerly and dips with the hill toward the salmon river in some places it is exposed by er erosion oslon and at other points it is found immediately beneath the surface wash the hanging wall having been completely removed by erosion this fact of the formation was for a long time misunderstood and considerable money has been spent in former years trying to make the lead go into the hill many years ago a ten stamp mill was erected on the property and a good deal of ore was treated at this plant although only five stamps were ever put into commission the mill succeeded in grinding out a profitable lot of bullion the mill has gone into decay and could not be used today mining was conducted by the glory hole method the grunter mine lies most favorable for easy operations on the findings of recent exploitation it is shown that it can be worked like a big quarry the slope of the hill is such as to eliminate the necessity of haulage and a reduction plant near the river would receive the output of the mine by gravity tram mr suydam says the ore reserves of the mine at present blocked out measure not less than tons in sight the vein varies in thickness but carries good value there is no question of its being a great mine the adjoining mahogany mine owned by mcpherson amonson and cummings is a continuation of the same vein and should be incorporates incorporated for operations with the grunter mr suydam who has valuable property of his own at shoup is deeply interested in the construction of a wagon road there are only about three miles necessary to build from the wend country to shoup and he thinks a traversable road could be put into the camp for about some of it would be heavy rock blasting but the cost of this work according to mr suy dams estimate need not be high the people of salmon also are interested in this stretch of road it would be a great benefit to the mines of shoup and anything that benefits those mines is necessarily beneficial to salmon mr suydam thinks shoup will take on renewed mining life with the coming of spring and he looks to see the mines of pine creek just down the river from shoup take on more activity with the opening sea son he has a phone in his abts own house now and can talk to salmon from his placer the phone is installed by the forest bureau |
