Show THE LITTLE GIANT A correspondent of the butte intermountain from townsend montana says pioneers of broadwater county will remember the early history of the little giant mine as something om ething of a 4 bonanza it is said the first ore taken from the mine was treated by running it through a common sluice box unfortunately no record was kept of this method of treatment of the ore but the ore so treated must have been very rich as the tailings we are told assayed better than per ton later an old fashioned wooden mortar six stamp mill run by water power was installed on cro crow w cr creek eek three miles distant from the mine the old stamp mill being an improvement over the sluice box method but still the loss of gold in the tailings was enormous it is estimated that during the period from the time the mill was installed until it burned down down a few years ago nearly washed down crow creek in the mill tailings however in spite of the extravagant cost of mining and milling and the enormous loss in the tailings the mine has paid in dividends to its forer owners this was taken from above the level of the mine at present the little giant is located l on the north and east slope of a bold mat mountain intrain locally known as giant hill six miles north of ra kersburg ders burg and ten miles west op townsend rown send vie ve nearest railroad point near the old min ing camp of hassel giant hill is made up largely of a formation locally called Randers burg diorite being the same type and belt of diorite in which the keating B azack ack friday rena and other radersburg burg mining properties are lor located abed the little giant gold mining company a recent incorporation managed by practical mining engineers has the little giant group of claims under development the new company is driving a crosscut tunnel into giant hill from the north this tunnel is now completed into the mountain feet about feet farther it will crosscut cross cut the little giant vein at a vertical depth of 1350 feet this new level will give the company as much new nei sloping ground as has been worked out above from which nearly worth of ore has been produced it will also tap the vein below the limit of oxidation in the sulphide zone and also below the influence of the swing or lateral movement of the top of the mountain that has pinched and narrowed the veins above 0 0 |
