Show M morgan organ county count y utah and its bright future by col geo A henry away back in the early days of morgan county utah at a time when the mining industry first began to attract the attention of the settlers along the course of the weber river is when a large per cent of the first discoveries were made park city bingham and other contiguous camps were having their stories told with reference to fabulous discoveries being made from day to day the excitement spread from camp to camp and then from one county to another it was at this time that many of the citizens of morgan county divided their time between agricultural and mining pursuits they were apt scholars and under the guidance of experienced prospectors pec tors soon became owners of many mining claims the value of which for future wealth became a both day and night dream to attain the fortunes thus dreamed of years of annual assessment work at per er claim followed after a long while the inflated values began to wane vane and about the time the claim owner was satisfied to listen to a reasonable price a second discovery was made namely the purchaser had gone and seemingly gone for good fo for years after the tide went out taking many a locator with it claims were virtually abandoned most of the owners having expended every dollars their limited resources would permit it was then that a third discovery was made I 1 e that there Is on vast difference between being a good farmer and a good miner they are both indispensable in their places but not always profitable when the effort Is made to change shifts with each other morgan county morgan county is bounded by the counties of salt la lake ke summit davis weber and rich the weber river valley is its avenue to market the union pacific railroad skirts the banks of the weber river from the northwest to the southeast lines of the county it is safe to say that three fourths of the surface of the county is mountainous A complete history of the mineral conditions of the various mountain ranges would more than fill every page of this edition of the mining review morgan city morgan city the county seat is an ideal town and being centra centrally lly located will eventually become a haven of rest and recreation to the citizens of salt lake city as colorado springs now is to denver colorado not only this but as a central point for the mining interests of the county now demanding more than ordinary attention it would hardly be safe to predict what its population may be within two five and ten years from now A glimpse of the mines commencing three fourths of a mile north of morgan the grounds of the morgan cres cent group of mining claims face the city climbing up the southwestern slope of the range the apex is reached from thence for a distance of over feet the mineral bearing zone with its plainly defined contact walls of quartzite porphyry shale and carboniferous limes command the right of way until the boston morgan group picks up the line of march and carries with it the same game conditions from its southern to its northern lines following the same corn com pass line northward for a distance of three miles the protruding walls of quartzite porphyry and lime between which the four metals are confined you are led through the morgan argentine group which joins hands with the mountain chief Car carbonate bonat gem carbonate hill halverson I hardey and groups in all covering an area of several hundred acres these properties with the exception of the trox 7 er lay south of cottonwood canyon to the north of cottonwood creek the same mineralized conditions appear but as yet not investigated by your correspondent returning to the southern lines of the al morgan organ cres crescent cent group our course of travel will lay south and southeasterly for a few miles joining the morgan crescent on the south is the valley view group recently located and showing flattering gold val S imma V Y j 7 A at 1 0 1 Z va X 4 fir one of the main business streets of morgan utah view from the morgan crescent dump ues aes before crossing the weber river the evelon edgerly and lucky strike groups must be traveled over both situated within three miles of morgan city and within the trail lines of the mineral zone above alluded to from the lucky strike group some very valuable gold silver and topper copper ores have been extracted it is safe to predict that this property will soon become one among the leading history making groups in morgan county passing to the east of this enormous mining zone as it approaches the weber river canyon the country rock undergoes a radical change great upheavals of reddish colored sandstone dyken with blue lime shows how quickly conditions change hugging the sandstone on its eastern rim a large range of cement lime jime Is found it is at this point where a 0 cement plant has been established from which many car loads of extra cement are shipped daily down the river a short distance is the famous freak oi of nature known as the devils slide to which the attention of all passengers traveling over the union pacific railway is called as they pass by from this point by changing your direction to the southwest you soon get back to the mineral belt after it has crossed the river in its southern trend the chicago utah and kanosh at a point three miles south of the weber river ford the chicago utah camp is located the camp is a beautiful one having every convenience requisite for handling a large force of men the large dumps of copper stained shale fronting the upper and lower s and shafts indicate several thousands of dollars expended here as an earnest of the faith the chicago utah company has in eventually reaching shipping quantities of ore the tunnel and shaft shaf t walls are streaked with extraordinarily rich oxide and carbonate copper ore carrying flattering values in both gold and silver joining this group the kanosh grounds are staked and recorded holding within their lines the same ore bearing channel while as yet undeveloped there is no reason why its future should not reach the same par value hardscrabble mill creek to the southwest of the pathway above traveled a second prominent mineral range presents itself ithel f for consideration here you find yourself as indicated above in front of a gateway or narrow pass known to some as the devils gate you are now eight miles south of morgan city standing at the viewpoint from which the picture was taken mill creek as it cut its way through the narrow gorge with its pale bridge and the wagon road beyond are plainly outlined the mountain slope a mile distant lands you in an entirely different belt one that has its early day history and at the present time is being aroused from its rip van winkle sleep here you are met with larger bodies of granite large veins of mica schist granite diorite shale and slate and many quartz ledges upon and near the surface upon the murchie group copper and silver ores predominate with gold as a third consideration in quantity nickel ore assaying as high as 7 per cent has been found here running side beside with the other metals but as yet no attempt has been made to prospect the ground for quantity large out cropping of iron are frequent within this zone from which many tons were shipped to the smelters shelters sm elters years ago for fluxing flexing purposes V when reaching the comb of this range south of the merchie group lead silver ores claim their place within elbow touch of gold and copper found there you are now upon grounds owned by T 0 porter and associates who certainly have fine ore to look at and in their history of assay values rich enough to satisfy any reason reasonable ab e prospector other locations adjoin the porter group ones one of which was sold a few weeks ago at a fair figure but not having the facts your relator makes a period here from h 0 INI M mill ill creek at the gateway showing perpendicular char cha actor of formation this point northerly to the town of peterson a distance of not less than fifteen miles the prospector will find a virgin country one that is worthy of close attention your correspondent has taken pains to interrogate many of the older citizens residing in the valley bordering this part of the range from e surface showings on the chicago utah group all who have searched the hills after stock game and as thearders hoarders hoar hear ders the same story is told i 1 e that they have found copper iron and many ledges of mineral stained quartz that but elitc e effort has ever been made to establish mining claims there also that in this p part art of the district they ha have ve found larger quartz ledges than exists in any other part of the country A most inviting field after a continuous study of this district for the past four months coupled with an experience of twenty one years in prospecting and locating mining property in utah and nevada I 1 am in earnest in my convictions when I 1 say that nowhere in all researches have I 1 found a more inviting field than exists in morgan district commena iny at park city thirty miles distant as the crow flies you can find by fol following lowin the trend of the intervening interi mountain ranges the same general conditions where the upheavals admit examination the country rock the mineral cropping and the contacts are virtually the same in a word the mineral belt of morgan county is a part or in other words a link of the same chain laying across utah and richest mineral zones there seems to be in an attempt to recapitulate the resources of the county no want unsupplied water in abundance not only for ordinary camp purposes but for the transmission of power to any limit possible for smelting smelling sm elting manufacturing or electrical uses wood for camp and timbering within easy distance and a home market not surpassed anywhere in utah the best of flour from the morgan mills premium peas from the morgan cannery oats hay vegetables fruits butter eggs chickens and home fed beef and mutton all within a half days drive from any camp in the district to the prospector and men desiring to help develop the mineral worth of morgan county a hearty twel welcome come will be given by the business men of morgan city and the farmers of the county all of whom realize that to this class of citizens the future growth and dealta of the county very greatly depends GEO A HENRY |
