Show min mining i n g sto stocks c ks fo for r 1909 BY WM H ph D A careful survey of the records of the salt lake stock and mining alining exchange for the year 1909 reveals many things that were not altogether satisfactory while the sales on the exchange were heavier than for any previous year and while the value of the transactions exceeded that of the year before there was a general decline in prices and a shrinkage of values that were exceedingly discouraging to the investor and the speculator the stocks which seem to suffer most were those which were paying large dividends the following table gives a very interesting comparison of prices showing the high prices of january of last year and the low prices of december it will be observed that there are few stocks which show any advance above the prices prevailing early in the year in two cases there is an apparent gain but the assessments levied would if added to the cost show a net loss afi ot 1 P rt 0 1 0 D STOCKS sa 3 11 5 15 01 of the leading active stocks traded in on the exchange during the year showing the capitalization of the companies the low and high prices for the year and the total number of shares sold it may be stated in passing that teat the high prices prevailed early in the year and the low prices during the last part of f the year there tere is 19 some interest in a comparison of the annual sales on the ex exchange chanke for the last thirteen y years ears it will be noted that there has been a very marked increase from year to year in the amount of business done the following table shows the record by year giving the number of shares sold and the total market value it should be borne in mind however that not until 1903 was a complete record kept of all the transactions the figures before that period are based largely on estimates for the curb trading the year 1901 was a very exciting one 1906 13 1 08 1909 the comparison of the business transacted act d last year with that of the year before is interesting as showing the gradual rise in the amount of business from the early part of 1908 on through a large martof part of the last year the decline coming during the last three months of 1909 indications point to another period of gradual advance the present year is likely to repeat the history of 1908 the dividend record for the past year DIVIDENDS quotations YEARS no par NAME OF
