Show FOR A MINES BUREAU we believe that the mining industry of utah has reached such proportions and has become such a potent factor in the industrial welfare of the state that it is deserving of more substantial and united recognition than has been accorded it in the past As a mining community it is rapidly taking a place in the front ranks and has now reached that stage where it should be more thoroughly advertised and exploited such exploitation and publicity should come from an official source such as would carry weight and inspire confidence and the reliability of which could not be questioned by the establishment of a state bureau of mines a firmer basis and a wider scope would be attained and the progress of our greatest industry would be accelerated to an astonishing degree go outside of utah and see how little interest is manifested toward the vast mineral resources of our state and then come home and find how ignorant her own citizens are of the many possibilities knocking at their very doors if the money that is constantly being invested in neighboring states could be kept at home for the exploitation of local properties a wonderful change would soon be noticeable ti the trouble troubie is that the home investor and the outside capitalist do not know that utah presents such a splendid field for investment it has never been put up to them in the right way except by individuals divi duals and their source of information is frequently of a private nature and often very meager under these circumstances would not the establishment of such a mines bureau be a most commendable comme dable enterprise it would supply information that could not be obtained in any other way it would educate both the outside world and local talent as to our mineral resources and it would give the mining status of the state a much wider publicity As to the resultant good and many benefits to be derived from such an institution there can be no reasonable doubt we have only to look to other states where such bureaus are maintained and we will wonder why we have been so tardy in adopting this stepping stone to progress our near neighbor idaho has an excellent bureau of mines and her rapid rise in the field of mining bears eloquent testimony to its usefulness ful ness during the last session of congress a bi bia 1 l was introduced providing for a bureau of mines that would be national in its scope while the bill was tabled the introduction of this measure was a step in the right direction and its adoption next fall now seems practically assured however utah should not wait for aid from the federal government in this direction but at the next legislature should provide for a state bureau of mines the time is now ripe for such a move and the agitation of this question should be given immediate attention |
