Show THE CAPITOL MINES COMPANY the capitol mines company the personnel of which stamps this enterprise as meaning much for the future of eldorado district owns a group of seven claims five of which are patented situate in the eastern portion of the district and embracing properties whose past history is as interesting and full of romance as that which has been chronicled concerning the wall street and the the capitol mines were located some eighteen or twenty years ago by a prospector who disposed of the same to the well known firm of monaghan murphy of needles california this was sixteen years ago and the new owners started at once in the development of high grade ore when it was decided to equip the property with a milling plant the mill was built on the banks of the colorado river two or three miles distant the plant consisting of a small inch huntington the mill was in operation for bomb some time but owing to the fact that the management tried to mill rich carbonate ores which carried heavy values in gold there was a heavy loss in the tailings the tailings dump was afterwards sold to an enterprising individual who put in a portable cyanide plant and this gentleman took out several thousand dollars by the cyanide process in the meantime after the mill had been running some time an indian named avon conceived the idea that it was his mission to exterminate the white race in eldorado canyon at copper canyon he ambushed a man by the name of nelson and killed him he then visited a prospector known as judge miller took supper with him and then shot his host when his back was turned from the miller cabin he went to the capitol mines where charlie monaghan brother of one of the owners of the property was in charge he reached the capitol after miller had gone to sleep aimed through the window at hans head and killed him at this time monaghan murphy had made a great deal of money and were not dependent on the mine and the death of charlie monaghan resulted in the closing down of the property this was nearly twelve years ago and since that time nothing has been done in the working of the capitol mines with the exception of operations lasting about two months by parties having a bond on the property and whose only aim in life seemed to be the gouging out of high grade ore for which no accounting it is stated was made to monaghan murphy later on the property was purchased by T H tracy of the tracy engineering company of new york since which time it has formed the basis for the incorporation of the capitol mines company up to the time that the capitol mines passed into the hands of mr tracy the property had a recorded production p of over and from surface operation only consisting of open cuts short tunnels and shallow shafts and yet at the time of the visit of the writer to this most promising property ore of excellent values was to be seen on every hand and superintendent perin nay at the very grass roots had uncovered a new body of ore carrying high grade gold and silver while doing a little prospecting work the formation of the capitol mines is a 4 rk A AX ft t f 4 r fa V A u 15 A ton of boo ore sacked are fissures with a nearly east and west strike and dipping to the west and north on the surface the ores are chiefly carbonate of lead carrying free gold at depth the ore changes into an unaltered sulphide the veins are from four to forty feet in width between walls and the ore is all of good milling grade with occurrences of rich ore running from to 1500 to the ton on the dumps at the capitol mines there are several thousand tons of ore of good milling grade the company has ordered and is now putting in a hoisting plant the intention being to sink a new shaft which will tap both the cap capitol tol and sunny south veins it is also engaged in the construction of a 60 horsepower marine oil engine for the equipment of a boat which is to run between needles california and the mines on the colorado river a distance 0 of f some eighty five miles this boat will be fifty feet long with a ten foot beam and will have a carrying capacity of about eight tons it will tow a barge up and down the river the barge to have a carrying capacity of about thirty tons the mining review is informed that it is the intention of the company as soon as the new shaft is sunk to a sufficient depth and levels have been ru run n on the ore bodies to install a mill at the mine and an electrical electric al power plant on the banks of the colorado river the electrical plant will be operated by oil engines the boat will be used in bringing fuel from needles to the power plant and the mill will be operated by electric motors the water supply will be derived from a spring a mile and a half from the mine this spring has a fall of about feet above the mine and the water will be brought in by gravity the capitol mines company is capitalized at of chichas which is pre berred stock the officers
