and during the thelast thelast thelast last two aid ard years has spoken at association building openings and cor cornerstone la ings from Shanghai to St StPaul StPaul StPaul Paul But the government was not the first to discover the practical l everyday ever day value of the th Y M 1 C A although ever since the Civil ClU war an army deportment department nt of the Young Mens Christian association has nas been a valuable adjunct te to that depart department department ment of the United States Stites government of which William H Taft Tan was as formerly secretary What bat the government discovered and applied in the Canal zone none was noted and acted upon a decade ago by the rail railroad railroad railroad road corporations of the country countr Over universities and other institutions of higher learning in North America alone have adapted to their own special problems problems lems this same organization while coun counties counties counties ties and groups of small towns have with in the last few years followed the lead of the larger cities and instituted i Y M MC MC 1 C As with a secretary The work of the Young Mens ens Christian asso associations associations which started in England some 80 sixty years ago has gone forward with unqualified success until in practical every ever land Jand on the globe the Y M C CA CA CA A is organised organized numbering mem members members members bers employing 2972 secretaries and own owning owning owning ing buildings approximating in value Policies Correspond Each local association as lation is but by frequent conventions and confer conferences conferences conferences the valuable experience epert nc and con consensus cOn cOnsensus consensus of opinion of the entire brother brotherhood brotherhood brotherhood hood is made available for each local field Hence it is not surprising to find that the policy of the association a as re recently recently stated by the executive secretary of the board of management corresponds very closely with that laid down for the th same organisation in New England old England continental Europe and Asia This policy is as IUS follows 1 That the Y X M C C A shall strive to provide either directly or indirectly for the unmet needs of the young men and boys bo s of our city avoiding duplica duplication ton tion of preset it agencies w 2 That all aU the work must show ape specific s cine results to Justify its expenditure of time or money 3 1 That the study of the life of Christ and the practice of his teachings be urged while making no fight upon any creed or religion 4 That the association a atlon cultivate all I public or civic movements promising the betterment of conditions surrounding young men and boys but that it abstain from ordinary politics either by con concerted concerted concerted action of its membership member hip or by bythe bythe bythe the use of its property Neither the amount of money an in industrious Industrious Industrious man has the creed he believes or does not believe nor the country in which he was born affects the welcome which is promised him in n the thi local Y YM yM YM M C A That this policy is accepted as satis satisfactory satisfactory factory by b the community is most amply amp proven by the recent successful campaign for funds and by the further history of ot the achievements of the past year Among these an event of great importance was wag the winning for the second time of the McBurney memorial cup This cup is given given given en for six I x months of each year to the thi association in North America having the largest actual number of members under 18 years year of age who are passed in the international in international International examinations in educational work by the international board of ex examiners examiners examiners in New York City and for the theother theother other six months to the association so 80 passing the largest percentage of its member membership mem membership ber under 18 IS years of age Association Improves Four years ago a If 0 under the first head the Ute local Y M C A ranked fifth the next year it moved up to fourth place one year later it was first under that heading and last year Salt Lake was w s the th first on both bases of competition c Particular mention should be made of the wisdom w with which Robert C French ch the educational director four our years ago planned this work for employed boys and of the careful and energetic manner in which ills his successor Ji Jt Gustav White has forwarded and added to the work so 50 sowell sowell well begun be un In the last year the student council co and the beys boys taking the examination nation have haw cooperated cooperate most enthusiastically enthusiastically enthusiastically to secure e ure this honor for Salt Lake Through these combined efforts the as association sedation enjoys the distinction of being the first to bring this cup west of the Mississippi valley and aDd the first city in North America to win this international twice The growth of student activity has been beena a source of much satisfaction The stu student student student dent council is l an organization of young men the members of which are selected by b the students and teachers in the different dif different different ferent classes selections being based up upon upon on OD general proficiency and ability for leadership This organization has handled han handled handled during the past season a number of events event directly and indirectly foster lag Ins I every ranch branch of the departments ac activities activities Expense of Education The average average educational department expense ex expense expense pense per student for class work has been about 15 while the income from the di direct direct direct fees fee for classes has for the period averaged The Thi Y M C A must necessarily nece arlly figure that for each student in 10 the night school it must provide from membership and subscription sources an additional or more per por year to cover his hie expenses in this department The special class fees can be to ap approximate approximate proximate also comes In the educational department is most gratifying This library con contains contains tame 69 volumes In addition to some fifteen dally daily papers and magazines It Is not considered justi have been regularly held at Silver Brothers iron ironworks Ironworks ironworks works the Denver ds Rio Grande rail railroad railroad railroad road shops and the Oregon Short Line railroad shops Volunteer business businessmen men and others have spoken solen to these groups once weekly at the noon hour It i is the intention that as these meet meeting lags ing become bt come established that each group shall sesame assume responsibility and care for its own meeting leaving ng the association aA free to nurture new nen 1 points 1 Many Topics The topics discussed have Ime ba e not been exclusively religious but have con contained contained a discussion of educational edu physical and industrial subjects ASwell aswell as aswell well All AU told different meetings m have been held association has for three years conducted boys ys clubs wherever thought wise when requested by the tho Son San I day dav school These clubs have en enrolled en enrolled enrolled rolled on an average some boys and aad have cost the association for supervision and care from to a year ear above the small income from dues It is believed that in the future sonic some of tl these Uese ese clubs might well be cared for er by the churches to which they the are ure connected The religious relt Gus work has cost on an average some 2 per year since its inception It should be sane aggressive aggressive
