Probably the I largest outdoor political mass meet meeting meeting ing lug ever organized in Chicago was I held tonight in the half mile of State street known as the Court of Honor Bonor The great thoroughfare nearly twice the width of or any an other othe street in Chica Chicago go was thronged from Van Buren to Randolph streets with a cheering Jost Jostling jostling ling hing perspiring 11 mass of people Chairman Jones of the national Dem Democratic Democratic Democratic committee had designated this as flag nag day and the national banner played an Important and spectacular part In the celebration Portraits of Bryan and Stevenson were also numer numerous numerous numerous ous ous along the broad street The wea weather weather weather ther was perfect for an outdoor dem demo o I Along both sides of ot State street t speakers stands had been erected at short distances apart and from these points Democratic orators of national f prominence addressed the portions of the multitude nearest at hand The chief speaker was Adlai El E Stevenson the other orators being Congressman Joseph W W Bailey of at Texas Governor Hogg of Texas Benjamin Shiveley of ot Indiana Captain Patrick OFerrall of f Washington D C John I Martin of Missouri Samuel L Alschuler Demo Democratic Democratic cratic cratl candidate for governor of Illi Im Illinois nois and Mayor Carter Harrison of Chicago besides a score of ot local speak speakers ers Mr Stevenson and the rest of the orators were driven rapidly from one stand to another and were thus en enabled enabled enabled to make mal e their arguments heard by thousands of people I Street In a Blaze of Light The illumination of the court of honor was begun as soon as darkness set In Inand Inand inand and soon after from Randolph to Van VanBuren VanBuren Buren streets it was a solid soUd blaze of light The crowds began to gather I early earl and soon the broad thoroughfare I humanity through which winch it was almost impossible ward clubs and ward organizations organisations from all parts I of the city added their numbers and their enthusiasm to the excitement of the celebration Mr Stevenson arrived at noon from Milwaukee and was entertained at dinner by hy the Iroquois club followed by a reception later in the afternoon Mr Stevenson was joined at the Iro Iroquois IroQuois club rooms roonie by the other speakers Shortly after 7 the orators were driven to the State street stands and L I the speaking began Mr Stevenson was greeted at all points with the greatest enthusiasm Escorted by the county Democracy Mr Stevenson was first driven to the stand erected near Randolph street Seated with him in his carriage were Mayor Harrison and Robert E Burke With ith great difficulty a squad of police secured a passage for the carriage through the crowds that pressed out outward outward outward ward to the car tracks and at times made it almost Impossible for the street streetcars ears cars to get et through All along the line linC lin linto to Randolph street treet the former vice Ic president stood up in the carriage and bowed in response nse to the terrific cheers of the crowd Rush Hush to Shake Hands Rands The passage of the carriage was slow and at times the congestion of the th crowd caused it to stop altogether Seizing these opportunities the tho th people pressed close lose to the sides of the car carriage carriage and forced r Mr Ir Stevenson to shake their hands He seemed greatly pleased with the demonstration Mr tr r speeches s at the first stands half a dozen In number were w re street becomes narrower and this caused great con congestion congestion the he people pouring in from the broad part of the street to surround the stand from which Mr Stevenson Steven on spoke The police poUce had to fight their way through and it was some time before Mr 1 Stevenson could be escorted from the carriage to the stand From this point he faced a solid en enthusiastic enthusiastic n mass of humanity stretch stretching ch chIng ing from Monroe onroe to Madison The peo pee people people pie were so eager to get within hearing distance that the police p Uce could do noth nothing ing the meetings but at none of them was there anything like a hostile demonstration demon and never any abatement of enthusiasm wherever Stevenson appeared It was well along toward midnight when the big
